Catch up on Part 1 of our Hawaiian honeymoon here
Part 2 here  Part 3 here  Part 4 here  Part 5 here  Part 6 here  Part 7 here  Part 8 here

First of all, I want to say THANK YOU to all of those that have read these posts every week and taken the time to leave such nice comments!  Trust me, I know that the posts have been long and very drawn out, but I really wanted to include every detail I could remember of our honeymoon so I can look back at this for the rest of my life and feel like I'm re-living it :)  It has been so much fun to write about the best trip I've ever been on and in a way, it is sad to me that this is the last post because it almost feels like the honeymoon is ending all over again!  So, thank you all again for sticking around!

Thursday, August 8
I woke up about 6 am on Thursday morning.  It was departure day :(  We had to leave our hotel around 11 am so we had wanted to get up early to enjoy the beach for our last few hours.  Nick was still passed out so I let him sleep and relaxed on the balcony with my book until about 7 am.  We did some cleaning up of our room and got down to the beach about 7:45 am.  We were the first ones there!  The sun was already shining so we relaxed and did some swimming.

I do have my swim suit on under there ;)

A little after 9 am, we decided to head back up to the room to give ourselves enough time to get packed.  We had one thing we had to do first: get rid of our beloved boogie boards.  We didn't want to just throw them away so we decided to find some kids to give them to so they could enjoy them.  There were only a few families out on the beach as it was still early and their kids already had boogie boards.  We sat around for about 15 minutes until a cute family with two young daughters came out to the beach.  We offered them the boards and they were so excited!  We chatted with them for a couple of minutes and they said they were leaving the next day but would be sure to pass them on to another family tomorrow.  I wonder how many times those boards got passed on!

We spent the next 2 hours showering, cleaning up, packing and more packing, and taking some final balcony pictures.  We were obsessed with that balcony if you couldn't tell!

At about 11 am, we made our way down to the hotel lobby to check out.  We were SO sad to be leaving!  We absolutely loved Maui, everything about it.  Nick pulled up our convertible and we loaded it up and headed out to the airport.  We promised each other we would be back one day!

It was about a 45 minute drive to the airport and we found our car rental drop off easily.  Everything went smoothly and before we knew it, we were on a tram to the terminals.  We go to check in to our flight and the customer service man tells us that our flight leaving Maui is delayed.  So delayed that we are going to miss our layover in San Francisco.  That was not what we wanted to hear at all!  Luckily, the man was so helpful and made so many phone calls on our behalf to get us on to another flight.  After about 20 minutes, he had secured us two spots on a flight leaving out of Maui earlier so that we would make it to our San Francisco connection.  We rushed to our new gate and thankfully made it on the plane!

Friday, August 9
It was a relatively uneventful 5.5 hour flight that landed in San Fran on time, at about 11:30 PST.  Our layover was supposed to be very short, so when we arrived to SF and saw that our flight was delayed about 30 minutes we were happy as this meant we had time to get food.  Not much was open and we didn't have time to do a sit-down restaurant (or so we thought...) so we got bagels and headed back to our gate.  It came to be about the time we should be boarding and they made an announcement at our gate that our plane had still not arrived and we were moving gates.  We picked all our stuff up and everyone moved over to the new gate.  At this time, they said the flight would be delayed for about another hour, leaving at 1 am PST.  Apparently, wherever the plane was coming from had bad weather and couldn't leave on time.

1 am rolled around and we were exhausted and ready to get home.  And then we find out, we've been delayed about another hour.  At this point, we've been in the airport for about 3 hours waiting and we aren't sure when we'll be leaving.  We were tired and cranky!  We had timed our original flight so we would be getting into Chicago about 5 am to beat the rush hour traffic into downtown.  So much for that plan!

Our airplane finally arrived and we left San Fran about 2:30 am PST, so 4:30 am Chicago time.  Our bodies were so thrown off by all of the the time changes!  As soon as the flight took off, they passed out blankets and turned off the lights and everyone slept for the 3 hour flight.  I woke up about a half hour before we landed in Chicago, so tired and so ready to be home!  Landing and baggage claim went smoothly but we were dreading getting a cab as it was 8 am Chicago time, prime rush hour!  Thankfully, we experienced NO traffic.  I have no idea how this happened but someone was watching over us and knew we just needed to get home!  We crawled into bed about 9 am with a mix of emotions.  We were so thankful to be home safely but already missing the islands!

I cannot say enough good things about Hawaii.  If you are considering it for your honeymoon or just a vacation, it will NOT disappoint!  Hawaii has a reputation for being expensive but honestly, you don't have to spend a fortune to visit there.  I would love to provide recommendations or answer any questions you may have about a Hawaiian vacation!  We had the time of our lives and still talk about it almost daily.  We discuss when our next trip is going to be all the time and I really hope we will be fortunate enough to visit in the next 5 years.  Aloha!
