2013 In Review

2013 was a crazy, fun, huge year.  Probably the biggest year of my life so far!  It was a wonderful year full of lots of time with friends and family, all things wedding, a 2 week Hawaii trip, and lots of little moments that will never be forgotten.  For myself, I want to break down the year by month to remember just how great 2013 was to me!

-We rang in the New Year in Ann Arbor, Michigan at our friend Adam's home.  We went out to a nice dinner followed by Apples to Apples and drinks at Adam's and ended the night in his hot tub (of course)!

-All things wedding began in January.  We picked our Save the Dates, bridesmaid dresses, wedding bands and completed our gift registries at Macy's and Target.

-We ventured to Chicago's famous Chinatown for our first hot pot experience.  After dinner, we proceeded to a Chinese kareoke bar and played a Chinese dice game.  A very random but fun night with friends!

-Nick's parents came to visit!  It was a cold weekend but we had fun with our first visit to the Laugh Factory.

-Nick and I celebrated Valentines Day casually with a dinner at Paris Club and drinks at our new-found favorite country bar, Bub City.

-Lent began and I said goodbye to chocolate.  It was a looong 40 days!

-We headed to Holland for our wedding tasting at Boatwerks.  Everything was delicious and it was so hard to choose our favorites!

-My dad and I headed to Nashville for a long weekend.  We visited the Bluebird Cafe, the Grand Ole Opry and Opryland, the Country Music Hall of Fame and explored downtown Nashville.

-St. Patricks Day is celebrated in Chicago by dying the Chicago River green!  We celebrated with friends and lots of green beer.

-Nick and I spent our first Easter together!  We went to church and then to the bar (haha) to watch the University of Michigan basketball game.

-I headed to Florida for a few days with my family and it was COLD!  We still managed to have a fun time and did lots of shopping.

-It rained in Chicago for 2 days straight and on the 3rd day we had a flood day!  The highways were flooded so lots of work and schools were closed.  I spent the day on the couch :)

-Our favorite couple friends, Dane and Tiffany, visited us in Chicago.  We did lots of touristy things including visiting the Bean and dinner at the Signature Room.

-My family visited the next weekend and we shopped til we dropped and visited the Lincoln Park Zoo.

-My maid of honor, Rachel, came to visit and we had a fun girls weekend!

-We headed to Holland for a weekend filled with all things wedding planning, my dad's 50th surprise birthday party and Holland's famous Tulip Time.

-Nick and I attended our first wedding of the summer in Detroit, Michigan for our friends Mike and Jill.  We had a blast kicking off wedding season!

-June 1st brought my bridal shower!  Nick's mom and sister threw a beautiful shower for me in the metro Detroit area.  We had an amazing lunch, I got to spend time with friends I don't get to see often and we received lots of wonderful gifts!

-The next weekend, my girlfriends and I headed to Wisconsin to camp for the weekend, ha!  We attended the Zac Brown Band concert at Alpine Valley and had a blast!

-The following weekend, my dad got married!  I am so happy for him and his new wife, Tammy.  They both lost their spouses at such a young age and I am beyond happy that they have found each other.

-The same weekend, we celebrated my 25th birthday that happened to fall on Father's Day!  Nick and I spent the entire day at the beach in Holland, where else? :)

-Lastly (it was a huge month!), I celebrated my Bachelorette party in Chicago with 15 of my closest friends.  It was a wild night and I had the best time I could have ever asked for!

-July was an emotional month.  On July 2nd, we lost one of our best friends and groomsmen, Adam, to cancer.  The timing was a total shock but we luckily made it to Ann Arbor in time to say goodbye.  After we left the hospital, we gathered with around 20 of our closest friends for dinner and cheers to Adam.

-Instead of heading back to Chicago, we spent 4th of July with our friends Dane and Tiff at Dane's cottage in Michigan.  Despite the circumstances, we managed to have a good day!

-July 7th brought Nick's 27th birthday and Adams funeral.  It was a hard day but we are so thankful for our amazing group of friends.

-And on July 27th, we got MARRIED!  Read Part 1 and Part 2 of our wedding recaps.

-2 days later, we headed off to Hawaii for an amazing 2 week honeymoon.  Recap here!

-The first days of August were spent basking in the Hawaiian sun.  We had the best time!

-Back in Chicago, we had a fun night with our friends that may have involved a bar crawl and kareoke (but not Chinese kareoke!).

-We attended our college friends, Kelly and Erin's, wedding in Ludington, Michigan.  We made the weekend out of it and spent time with my grandparents that spend the summer in Ludington and my family that was in Silver Lake, MI for Labor Day!

-My girlfriends and I began our "dinner club" in which we get together every other week for a homemade dinner or to try one of Chicago's thousands of restaurants.

-Nick's grandpa sadly passed away the same week as his cousin's wedding, our last of the year.  We spent a few days in the Detroit area to say goodbye and then to celebrate his cousin.

-I started this little blog as Slice of Life on September 18th!  I had no idea what I was in store for but it has been one of my best decisions of 2013 by far!

-I went to two cider mills, one with my girlfriends and one with Nick!  Our apartment was filled with lots of pumpkins and yummy fall foods.

-Nick and I headed to Michigan to attend the University of Michigan vs. Indiana football game with my family.  It was rainy and cold but we had a blast!

-My girlfriends and I visited our friend Alex in Nebraska for a long weekend.  We spent some time in Kansas City, ate some amazing food and attended a University of Nebraska football game.

-Our volleyball team won our volleyball championship game!  #1!

-We had a fun night out with friends to celebrate my friend Nicole's 25th birthday.

-Nick and I attended Daley Plaza's 100th annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and had dinner at the Italian Village.

-We headed to Holland to spend Thanksgiving weekend with my family.  It was Nick and I's first Thanksgiving together!

-My family visited for our annual Christmas shopping and dinner at the Walnut Room weekend.  We also attended the Lincoln Park Zoo Lights and ate cinnamon rolls the size of our heads!

-Nick and I threw a Christmas party for our friends and it was a success!

-We headed to the Detroit area for our first Christmas together!

It's so easy to take life for granted but looking back at 2013 reminds me of how blessed we really are.  We are healthy, have a roof over our heads and have steady jobs but most of all, we have each other.  I pray that each of you have a wonderful  New Year and a very happy 2014!
