A Christmas-y Weekend

I feel like I need to start this weekend recap off with an apology.  And the reason for that is that I SUCK at taking pictures!  I have two problems; first, I only ever have my iPhone on me which doesn't take the best pictures.. I never really carry around my camera, which isn't even a very fancy one.  And second, sometimes I just totally forget to take any pictures at all!  I'm going to try and be better for the sake of having better recap posts.  After all, I did start this blog to document things going on in my life!

The weekend started off with a lazy Friday night.  I had to work until 9 pm and Nick had a hockey game so he was gone for the night.  After I got home, I finally ate dinner at about 10:30 and settled in to watch some TV.  So, I have a few guilty pleasure TV shows and Lifetime's Army Wives is totally one of them.  I freaked out on Friday when I realized that season 7 of Army Wives is now on On Demand!  I may have watched 3 episodes that night before Nick got home and we finally passed out a little after 1 am.  I rarely stay up past midnight so that just shows you how much I love my Army Wives :)

I know, I know.  Please tell me someone else out there watches this...

Saturday morning, my alarm went off at 9 am and I had a text from my dad saying that would be arriving in about 20 minutes!  I jumped out of bed and started getting ready.  They were over an hour early and of course, I still had to clean up the house!  After my dad and Tammy arrived, Nick and I got ready and then all 4 of us headed to Binny's Beverage Depot.  My dad was dying to check out Binny's as he loves trying new beers and wanted to make his own 6 pack.  If you've never been to a Binny's, they are HUGE!  Think every kind of alcoholic drink you could ever want.  You can spend hours in the place.  We made 2 six packs and headed back to our apartment to drop them off.

You can find some strange things at Binny's

After dropping off our beer, we headed for State Street.  Our first stop was at the Walnut Room to put our name in.  Dinner at the Walnut Room is a tradition we've been doing for the past 4 years since I moved to Chicago.  It's a really popular Chicago spot at Christmas-time and they don't take reservations, it's first come first serve.  We put our name in at 11:45 am and had a call-back time of 4 pm!  We spent the next few hours shopping on State Street.

About 3:45 pm, our pager went off and we headed to the 7th floor of Macy's.  We were seated in about 15 minutes at a table pretty much right under the giant Christmas tree!  The Walnut Room goes all out on their Christmas tree and it is a different theme each year.  We were a little bummed to see that the tree was decorated exactly the same as last year.  It was still gorgeous though.  We enjoyed another really nice dinner and a check off my December bucket list!

My dad's picture taking skills could use some work ;)

After our big dinner, we had plans to go to the Lincoln Park Zoo Lights.  We headed back to our apartment to get all bundled up as it was FREEZING out!  It was a high of 22 on Saturday and by 6 pm, it was maybe 15 degrees out.  We drove up to the zoo and on our way, saw this:

Chicago says!

This was Nick and I's second time attending Zoo Lights and we were really excited to go back.  This year was a bit of a let down as half of the Zoo was closed for remodeling and our favorite exhibit, the ape house, was closed for a private party.  It was still fun to wander around and see all of the lights, sip on some spiced wine and hot chocolate, and check out the animals.  Considering it was SO cold, there were barely any crowds which was really nice.  We stayed for about an hour and a half when we couldn't feel our toes anymore.  Another check off the December bucket list!

Cutness goes out the window when the temperatures are almost freezing!

We headed back to the apartment for the night.  It was nice to finally thaw out after being outside most of the day!  We had dessert and watched the Big 10 Championship game.

Sunday morning, we headed back up to Lincoln Park to have breakfast at Ann Sather.  I've been dying to get to this place forever (see my November bucket list!) to try one of their famous cinnamon rolls.  They did NOT disappoint!  Everything we had was delicious and the prices were really reasonable so we will definitely be back.  During breakfast, the snow started and it was really beginning to feel like Christmas! We browsed through Marshall's to walk off some of our huge breakfast and then my dad and Tammy had to hit the road.  We had such a great weekend with them!

The rest of Sunday was spent on the couch.  We tried to watch the Detroit Lions game on TV but it wasn't on any of our channels unfortunately.  They played the Eagles in a full out snow storm!  We were going to go to church at 5 pm but Nick was feeling a little run down so we decided to stay home.  It snowed pretty much the entire day and we got about an inch of snow.  We made dinner, watched the LAST Friday Night Lights episode (so sad) and then watched Home Alone.  It was really nice to just have a day spent together on the couch!

Hope you all had a great weekend as well!

  4. I had no idea about the Walnut Room, I'll have to check it out next year for sure! Did you know you could get married at the Lincoln Park Zoo? I wonder if that's what was going on at the ape house. I told my boyfriend I always wanted to get married at the Kolver Lion House but as soon as we walked in there we realized there's no way they can get that pee smell out of there. No amount of flowers will cover it. Ah well. Sounds like you had a great Chicago weekend too :)

  8. It sounds like you had an exciting weekend. Seeing the Christmas lights at the zoo had to be wonderful. It is too bad you couldn't see the football game. It was hilarious to watch them play in the snow.

  9. The Walnut Room looks so pretty!! Such a fun tradition! I've never done zoo lights before but it always seems like a fun/festive thing to do! Ahhh those cinnamon rolls look SO good-- I think cinnamon rolls are a food I could eat every single day! I love the scarf you're wearing in the zoo picture! So cute!

  12. I LOVE Army Wives. I've been watching it on Netflix, but I'm only on Season 3, so no spoilers please ;)

  14. So glad I'm not the only one that's just really bad at taking pictures. I typically only have my phone with me and I feel like a huge nerd whipping it out to take pictures of random things. My other camera is a DSLR and that's even worse because it's HUGE and a pain to lug around.

  15. What a fun weekend!! I'd like to take Collin and Emma to the Lincoln Park zoo sometime. All these places you're mentioning are going on my "must visit" list when Mia and I come back next. Also, you're not alone on the picture taking. Up until the last year or so, well since I got my nice camera, I was always a horrible picture taker. Still could use some work actually.
