Thanksgiving Weekend

Our Thanksgiving weekend was wonderful!  It was Nick and I's first married Thanksgiving but it was also the VERY first time we've ever spent the holiday together!  The last 6 years we would each go to our respective families homes which are 3 hours away from each other. We were really excited for this year!

I had to work until 9 pm on Wednesday night so we got up bright and early on Thanksgiving morning and made the 2.5 hour drive to Holland, Michigan - my home town.  The drive was uneventful and we were shocked to see about 6 inches of snow on the ground when we arrived!  Chicago has zero snow!  It looked more like Christmas than Thanksgiving.

Michigan here we come!

We had about 15 people over for Thanksgiving dinner at noon and I totally failed to take pretty much any pictures.  It was great to see family and eat a delicious meal.  The Detroit Lions always play on Thanksgiving so this year we got to root them on vs. the Green Bay Packers.  Shockingly, the Lions won!

 My only picture #fail

After everyone left, we broke out my chocolate pie.  You guys, this chocolate pie is my favorite part of Thanksgiving.  It is the best thing I've ever eaten.  My dad makes it for me every year and I always look sooo forward to it.  I'm not even willing to share with others that's how good it is!  I'm going to get the recipe up on the blog soon because everyone needs to experience this deliciousness.

Don't mind my terrible serving skills, it fell apart on me!

Thanksgiving night was relaxing as we sorted through the Black Friday sales papers and watched our first Christmas movie of the season - Fred Claus.  My dad and I have a tradition to go out shopping on Black Friday and we always have a blast.  We totally protested the whole stores opening on Thanksgiving day and didn't go out until about 5 am on Friday morning.

We hit up Target, Kohls, Macy's, The Gap, Bath and Body Works (of course), Wal-Mart and Meijers in about 5 hours.  We scored a lot of good stuff!  When we got back home about 10 am, everyone else was up and ready to go so we headed BACK to the mall, this time with the whole family in tow!

After spending the entire day shopping, Nick and I headed out to dinner with my grandparents to celebrate my Grandma's 80th birthday.  It was great to spend some time with them as we don't get to see them very often.  Since we were downtown for dinner, we decided to head to our favorite restaurant/brewery in Holland - New Holland Brewery - for a couple of drinks.  I was so exhausted from getting up at 4:30 am and going nonstop all day that the drinks just made me sleepy!  We headed home soon after and watched one of my favorite Christmas movies - Love Actually.

 So tired!

Saturday morning was a lazy one, we finally got to sleep in.  We had a big breakfast and then went out to run some errands.  One of our errands was sorting through my old clothes and finally packing up my wedding dress to be preserved.  I may have had to try it on ONE last time!  I love this dress.

I think it looks pretty good with a scarf!

We made it home just in time to watch the big University of Michigan vs. Ohio State rivalry football game!  Michigan isn't that great this year and OSU has been undefeated for 2 years so I didn't have my hopes up but it turned out to be a really close game.  The final score was 41-42 with Michigan losing at the last second after going for a 2 point conversion instead of an extra point.  Such a bummer!

 Winston, football and Christmas decorating!

We all enjoyed a few beverages :)

After the game, we headed to downtown Grand Rapids for the night.  We had dinner at a local brewery - HopCat - and then went to a Grand Rapids Griffins hockey game.  We've done this the last couple of years and it is such a fun night out.  Nick is obsessed with hockey so I know it's something he enjoys.  I even won a free t-shirt!  We crashed as soon as we got home since we had to leave at 8 am Sunday morning to head back to Chicago.

 Love Grand Rapids

 I actually won a t-shirt!

I had to work on Sunday afternoon unfortunately but we were so thankful that we got to spend Thanksgiving and the entire weekend with family!  Hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

    1. It was so sad to think the dress is just going to sit in a box and never be worn again but I don't think I could part with it if I sold it! I'm glad I'm not the only one who had to try it on one last time and wear it around the house!

When we go home for Christmas I have to sort through a bunch of my clothes and "move out" the rest of my things from my parents house. Downtown Holland is the cutest!

  7. I love your wedding dress with a scarf!! How chic! I wish we could wear them more than once! I'm so jealous your family loves to go Black Friday Shopping. I always want to and no one wants to go with me! Something about crowds?!

  9. Just curious, where did you take your dress to get preserved? I'm searching for a place in Chicago, but I have been unsuccessful in finding a good place.

    1. Hi Diana! I actually am from/got married in Michigan so while I was home for Thanksgiving, brought it to a local dry cleaner there. Sorry I can't help!
