Wedding 7.27.2013 - Part 1

July 27, 2013 was the very best day of my life - my wedding day!  It was the most perfect day I could have ever hoped, imagined and dreamed for.  I married my best friend and got to celebrate with 150 of our closest friends and family.

Since I've already recapped our Hawaiian Honeymoon, I thought it was beyond time that I recap the day that started it all.  Nick and I got married on Saturday, July 27th in Holland, Michigan - my home town.  We were married in my childhood church, Fellowship Reformed Church, and had our reception in a large tent on the lawn of Boatwerks Waterfront Restaurant

As weddings go, not everything went according to plan.  We had one problem the day of the wedding and that was the weather.  Holland is a gorgeous beach front town on the shores of Lake Michigan and I always knew I wanted to have a summer wedding there.  I decided on Boatwerks so we would be waterfront-  I pictured the tent wide open, a 72 degree evening with a slight breeze, music playing off the water.. you get the picture.  What I got instead was the coldest, windiest July day you could ever imagine!  It was maybe a high of 55 degrees and the sky threatened with rain the entire day.  I thank God it never did rain but it wasn't quite that summery day that I had hoped for.

The weather didn't hold us back, though!  The sides went up on the tent, heaters were placed in all corners and we had ourselves a cozy reception inside a warm tent.  It was different, but better than I could of hoped for!  I'm so thankful that this was literally the only problem on our big day.  Everything else went beyond smoothly.

Here is our wedding weekend!  Prepare yourself for looots of pictures!

Friday, July 26
Holland is my home town so that meant about 60% of the people attending the wedding would be traveling.  Our wedding party and close family arrived on Friday afternoon.  It was a cooler day, cloudy and looked like it might rain at any minute (the theme of the weekend...).  My bridesmaids got to my dad's house about 1 pm and we spent the afternoon getting things ready for the rehearsal and the next day.

We had the church rehearsal at 6 pm and it lasted about an hour.  We went over the game plan for the next day and made sure everyone felt comfortable with everything.  It was also a big reunion as my favorite people that I don't get to see as often as I would like arrived!

Everything at the church went smoothly so we headed over to dinner at Alpen Rose - one of my favorite restaurants downtown Holland.  It was pouring rain as we left the church!

Supposedly the food was good ;)  I have no idea as I literally did not eat almost the entire week before the wedding.  I spent the week in Holland and I was going non-stop working on last minute projects, dress fittings, floral meetings and getting a tan obviously!  I had to remind myself to eat all week and I didn't do a very good job.  I just had no appetite!  I was too excited and a bit nervous and stressed.

After dinner, an impromptu speech was given by our friend Dave and then we distributed gifts.  I had gotten my girls Vera Bradley makeup bags, their jewelry for the wedding (earrings and a bracelet from Express), matching bath robes and the Anthropologie initial coffee mugs.  I got my MOH an additional Marc Jacobs school bag.  Nick got his guys a really nice engraved pocket knife and I can't remember what he got for his best man unfortunately.

We also had one last gift for our wedding party that was really close to our heart.  On July 2nd, just 3 weeks before the wedding, one of our groomsmen, Adam, passed away from cancer.  He was diagnosed a couple of weeks before college graduation in Spring of 2010 and he fought a hard battle for the last 3 years.  His death was really unexpected as he passed on a Tuesday and he had just been fine at Nick's bachelor party on Saturday, just 3 days prior.  Thankfully, we rushed to Ann Arbor the morning we found out he was in the ICU and were able to spend the day with our closest friends and his family saying good bye.  We will never, ever forget our friendship we both shared with Adam and therefore we wanted to give something back in honor of him.

We made a donation to Imerman Angels - an organization that Adam participated in.  They provide personalized connections that enable 1-on-1 support among cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers.  We attached a donation card to a can of Rockstar - in college, Adam worked for Rockstar as a promoter and he was constantly forcing everyone to take pictures with cans and drink them haha.  The stuff is nasty but we always did it for him.  We put a can in each gift bag for our wedding party and then had to take a group picture with them - just like Adam would have made us do!

It was so special as everyone in our wedding party knew Adam in some way and we really didn't want him to be forgotten about since he should have been there with us.

It was a lovely rehearsal dinner and we are so thankful to Nick's parents for hosting!  It was really nice to relax and catch up with everyone and get excited for the next day.

 All my girls!

 Groomsmen!

 Boys will be boys?

At about 9:30, we went our separate ways - the girls back to my dad's house and the boy's to the hotel.
We stayed up for a couple of hours drinking wine (of course) and just talking about how one of us was getting MARRIED in the morning!  There wasn't much sleep involved that night for me - I was waaay too excited!

Next Wednesday, our WEDDING day!

    1. Thank you! And of course - the one thing we can't control about wedding planning (the weather) doesn't cooperate! But I guess they always say "the worse the weather, the better the marriage"! People kept telling me that all day and I was like just please stop and make the sun come out! Haha

  3. How interesting - our wedding day is July 29, 2011 so same month as you but two years earlier. Luckily for us, that was the summer of the cicadas and they went away two weeks before. I was getting antsy thinking that if they were out we'd not be out for pictures but luckily it all went away.

  6. Loved this, and loved that you honored your friend Adam. Bummer the weather didn't cooperate, what would a wedding be without a mishap right?! My wedding cake toppled over on the way to the table haha, but I did not care, I was just happy!

    1. Oh my gosh! Did you get any pictures with it before it fell?! I'm thankful the weather is the only thing that didn't cooperate. But you are right, it wasn't a huge deal because I was just so happy the whole day!

  8. That's so sweet you guys took the pictures with the rockstar-- that will be something you can look back on and always remember Adam still being a part of your day. Your dress & shoes are so cute! You guys look great!

We had a similar issue with the weather-- you can always count on DC to be insanely hot but on our wedding day it was actually pretty cold and really windy-- which no one was prepared for! Luckily we didn't have any rain either and the following weekend was like 95 degrees, which actually made me really thankful we ended up with cold instead of hot!
