First stop, Wisconsin

Nick and I have officially designated 2014 as our "Year of Travel".  We don't have any huge, magnificent trips planned but we really want to enjoy this year and see as much of the US as we can.  From family trips to turning Nick's work trips into vacations, we have quite the year ahead of us!  We wanted to kick off January by visiting somewhere close to home that we've never taken advantage of - Wisconsin's skiing!  We both knew how to ski from growing up but it had been a looong time since either of us had been.  We settled on a weekend at Cascade Mountain in Portage, Wisconsin.

We were set to leave on Saturday morning but Friday night brought some bad news.  Nick was having some problems with the brakes on his car.  Yikes.  Since this didn't start until late Friday afternoon, he didn't have a chance to bring the car into a repair shop that day.  Nick drives a company car so he left his broken car at work and drove home in another company car.  My car is 11 years old and because I only use it to drive back and forth to work, it's not in the greatest shape.  We knew taking my car was out and we weren't sure if we should take Nick's other company car.

Sadly, we decided to reschedule our ski trip for the next weekend.  Friday was the last day to cancel our hotel so I figured we would have no problems rescheduling.  I called the hotel and they said that unfortunately, we had to have contacted them by 4 pm that day to cancel/reschedule without a fee.  Since we didn't want to lose our money, we decided to just buck up and take the other company car.  And I'm so glad we did!

Saturday morning we woke up and made the 3 hour trip up to Wisconsin.  The roads were clear and the drive went smoothly.

At least one of us was excited ;)

 So fashionable

We arrived at about 11:30 am and ate lunch.  We then bought our lift tickets and I rented my ski's.  I was nervous while putting them on - I'm not quite the daredevil I used to be and anything that puts my body in risk of getting hurt worries me now!  Nick plays hockey (on like 3 different teams) so he is still pretty good at skiing but I basically had to re-learn everything.  We started out on the bunny hills and thankfully, I only fell once!

We skied for a couple of hours and it slowly but surely started to come back to me. I could only manage the green trails but we were having so much fun!  We decided to head into the lodge and get something to eat.  A lunch of corndogs and pretzels - only the healthiest for us :)  Nick wanted to hit up some of the black diamonds so I relaxed in the lodge and watched from the window seat I had managed to score.  It was nice to warm up and give my muscles a break!

About 4 pm, we decided to head back out as it was getting dark and we wanted to do some of the trails that weren't lit for night skiing.  Unfortunately we were already too late and as we got to the top of a trail, they told us it was already closed for the night.  We spent the next few hours skiing some of our favorites before heading back into the lodge for dinner.

After dinner, my body was so tired and I knew that I was done.  Nick headed back out for about an hour and did some more runs while I hung out in the lodge bar and watched the Saints v. Seahawks game.  We had the best time and I only had one major wipe out the whole day so I was proud!

We headed to our hotel at about 7 pm and checked in.  Our bodies were already SO tired and I could feel the soreness coming on so we took hot showers and decided what we wanted to do that night.  We found out there was a movie theater right down the road so I decided to check one more thing off my January bucket list that day and head to the theaters!  We saw Lone Survivor and it was so good.  I definitely recommend it!

 For my FNL people :)

Upon getting back to our hotel that night, we crashed.  We were so tired and slept in until 9:30 am.  We made it down to the hotel lobby just in time for breakfast and then we made the drive back to Chicago.  We had the best time and our Year of Travel is off to a great start!  I'm already loving 2014!

  14. I'm glad you were able to go despite the issues that presented themselves. I have personally never had the guts to even attempt skiing. My brother and some friends do it, but I'm just too chicken! It looks like a lot of fun! Your photos always make snow look so nice! lol The pictures make me want to just jump in.

By the way, thanks for stopping by my page and showing so much love :) Greatly appreciated!

    1. I was feeling pretty freaked out as I was strapping on my ski's! Luckily, it all started to come back to me and it wasn't quite as scary. And it was actually pretty warm this day - around 35 degrees so it wasn't too bad! That's sad that I consider that warm haha
