Wedding 7.27.2013 - Part 4

Catch up on Part 1 here, Part 2 here and Part 3 here!

When I last left off, we were about to make our entrance into the reception.  It had started to sprinkle but it looked like the rain was going to hold off.  It was time to get the party started!

We went immediately to the head table where we started off with the speeches.  My dad gave a short but sweet speech welcoming everyone to the reception and welcoming Nick into our family.

Nick's best man, Dane, gave an amazing speech that had everyone laughing!  We have it video recorded and I still watch it like once a month!

My Maid of Honor, Rachel, was next and she gave the sweetest speech!  A friend told us a month or so after the wedding that it was the best MOH speech she had ever heard.

After the speeches, my dad said a prayer and dinner began!  We gave our guests two options - one being a chili lime glazed salmon and the second being a raspberry chicken which were both delicious!  Each entree was served with potatoes and green beans.  The food was amazing and even better than it was at the tasting.  Too bad I was still not in any condition to eat!  I was not hungry at all and at one point I got up to say hi to someone and never made it back to the table to eat.  They say your wedding is the most expensive dinner you buy that you will never eat :)

We did lots of mingling with friends and it was so great to see everyone!

Our friends were already starting to take over the dance floor so we decided we had better get a move on things!  First up was the cake cutting.  Our cake was champagne flavored with strawberries and white cream in the middle.  SO good, if only I could have gotten back to my seat because I'm sure I could have ate 5 slices of this stuff!

We then moved right into our first dance.  Nick and I aren't huge music people so we were clueless about what we wanted to dance to.  We don't have a "song" or anything like that so here is how we decided on our first dance song - no joke.  We were driving back from Michigan one day and the first dance song was brought up.  We had to come up with something but neither of us had any ideas.  We happened to be listening to a country station at the time so we said that the next song that came on was going to be our wedding song.  Ha!  It took about 5 songs to find an acceptable one as we refused to dance to Taylor Swift, "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" and a couple other duds, but we finally heard "Memories" by Keith Urban and that became our song!

Next up was the father-daughter dance and the mother-son dance.  We let our parents choose the songs for these dances ;)  My dad and I danced to "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts and Nick and his mom danced to "Simple Man" by Lynryd Skynner.

We had initially decided to skip the bouquet toss and the whole garter thing.  However, the week of the wedding my friends were all astonished that I wasn't doing a bouquet toss so I contacted my florists and they made an extra little bouquet at the last minute.  I'm so glad I ended up doing it! And still glad we skipped the garter thing :)

After that, it was officially time to get partying!  The dance floor was open, the drinks were flowing and everyone was having the best time.  Our DJ was amazing and literally played everything off of our must play list.  We know our friends and we have a few favorite songs so we made sure to play those and they were a hit.  All I wanted for our reception was for it to be one big dance party and that is exactly what I got!

Alpha Chi Omega forever!

Western Michigan University friends :) Someone broke out the WMU fight song right before this picture!

Pretty sure this was during the song "Friends in Low Places" - one of our favorites!

 Boys will be boys

And just like that, the night was over.  It was better than I ever could have imagined and this day will always be so precious to me.  I'll be forever thankful to our family for giving us the wedding of our dreams and to our friends that made this day so memorable.  I'll treasure the pictures and the memories forever and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!

  1. Looks like an awesome reception, your food sounds amazing! And what a sweet story surrounding your first song, definitely something to cherish :)!

I'm really glad you did the bouquet toss. It seems like the 'new thing' to do is NOT have a toss and I think that's sad. I loved trying to catch bouquets at other weddings and it's such a cute and fun tradition. Made for some cute pictures too!

Love your color scheme, so pretty!

  4. Keith and I didn't have a song either. Sure we had lots of favorites but like you, not ones we could do our first dance to. So one night we sat down and went through lists of suggested ones and we settled on one that wasn't on the list but linked to another, "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton. It was perfect! I had my Dad surprise me with our song and he picked "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" by Steve Wariner, to represent both him and my Mom who passed when I was 18 then Keith danced to "What a Wonderful World" with his mom. The only song I went cliche on was with the the bouquet toss, had to play "Single Ladies" of course!

  5. These pictures are awesome! We aren't doing the bouquet thing or garter business. We are some of the last of our friends to get married, so no one would be standing there waiting to catch them. HA! I love your cake innards too. Yummy!

  15. You clearly had a FUN FUN wedding and it shines through in the photos just how much fun you're having! BTW you're make-up was fantastic!! Sadly, I had one bite of our food and wedding cake - ugh so annoying because they were really good during the tasting - but there is always the slice that will be defrosted for our one year lol!

  31. Among all the wedding traditions, I think the tossing of the bouquet is the important and fun filled, especially for all the single women at a wedding.

  32. Wow this is such a nice blog!! I love it! I have been surfing the internet since the past two months about some tips to spice up my speech for my daughter's wedding and it has been so difficult for me to make up the perfect one. I came across a nice Father of the Bride Speech online which proved to be quite a life saver but I'm still not done yet and I love the way you have expressed such a personal and emotional issue. My daughter's wedding had been scheduled for the next month and I'm really excited about it, which is why I want to make it special for her. Thanks a lot for being so considerate.
