Valentine's Memories

Nick and I met the end of January 2007 at Western Michigan University - at a frat party to be more specific :)  We aren't huge Valentine's Day people (we're more of the just go out to dinner type - he does know not to forget the flowers!) but it always holds a special place in my heart as it kind of signifies the start of our relationship.  I love looking at old pictures and thought I would share some of our story through Valentine's pictures.  These aren't all from actual Valentine's Day but that time of year.

2007

This was the first weekend we met and this was our first picture together!  We met on a Thursday night and this next night, Nick showed up at a different (yes, frat) party that we were at.  We spent the entire weekend together and I was already a little bit in love!  We spent Valentines Day in 2007 watching a movie with two other friends - we weren't "officially" dating yet so we both did our best to avoid the fact/topic that it was even a holiday!

2008

By this time, we were finally in a real relationship.  His frat hosted a Valentines Day date party at a bar downtown - this is us on the cab right to the bar!

2009

This was Nick's senior year at WMU (my junior year) and once again, here we are at a frat party!  He had just found out that he was moving to Chicago in April and we were gearing up for the big change that was about to hit our relationship.  We celebrated this year by Nick surprising me with a special dinner at Zazio's and an overnight hotel stay at the Radisson in downtown Kalamazoo!  I'm so sad I don't have any pictures from that night.

2010

I have no idea why I'm covering my face, Nick's eyes are closed and our friend Alex decided to join in - a pretty terrible picture but this is the only one I could find of us from January-March of 2010!  Nick came back to visit me for Valentines Day and we began our tradition of skipping gifts and just doing a nice dinner out.  This was our second year going to Zazio's at the Radisson in Kalamazoo.  We celebrated the night out with friends after dinner.

2011

Nick and I were finally reunited after I moved to Chicago and honestly, life was a little rough at this point.  We had gone through a rough patch in our relationship and I was struggling with the move to Chicago.  I didn't know anyone, I wasn't happy at my job and I had just decided to move back to Michigan for a couple of months to re-evaluate my overall life situation.  I had to sublease my apartment and on Valentines night, we showed it to a really nice guy who ended up taking it from me and went out to dinner at Catch 35 in Chicago.  I don't have any Valentines pictures but this us with our friends Adam and Kyle the weekend before I moved back to Michigan.

2012

This was a much better year!  We were living together and Nick's best friend from home, Dave, had just moved to Chicago to live with us until he found his own place.  Nick surprised me with dinner at McCormick and Schmick's (can you tell he's learned that seafood is the way to my heart?) and we stayed overnight at the Drake Hotel!  It was so much fun and one of the best Valentine's we've spent together.

2013

Nick had a pond hockey tournament in Michigan's Upper Peninsula over Valentines Day so we celebrated a couple of weeks late.  We had a delicious dinner at Paris Club and then went for drinks at the brand new Bub City!  It was a really fun night.

What do you and your significant other do to celebrate Valentine's Day?  Or do you just boycott the holiday all together?

  8. Awww I love this! So cute you have pics from each year! We haven't done gifts or anything big since our first v-day together, but we'll be celebrating it more this year than years past, but staying in and having fondue and champs by the fire pit :)

  9. Aw I love seeing pictures of you two from the young college years! Glad you two got through your rough patch, and now it'll be your first V-Day as a married couple! I think we are just going to make dinner at home and fall asleep on the couch...again. Oh well, it wouldn't be us! I'll probably make a dessert and we'll exchange cards and small gifts. I'm happy it's on a Friday this year!

  13. Aw so cute you remember what y'all did every year. We kinda mix it up each year, but now that our wedding anniversary falls two weeks after V-Day, I'm cooking this year for my husband and parents since they'll be in town.

  17. Such a great post! My boyfriend and I have finally moved in together after being long distance for over two years. Neither of us like crowds, so we'll be spending the night at home making fondue and watching some fun semi-scary movies. Nothing too over-sweet for us :)

  19. How fun being able to see the progression of the relationship over the years! That first picture is totally cracking me up! Typical college picture and that girl sticking her tongue out ruining your first pic ;-)

  21. Aww so fun taking a look back! My husband and I started dating in 2006 but 2007 was our first Valentine's Day together too. We don't normally do much, if anything, but this year we decided to get each other gifts and go out to dinner. Nothing too big or fancy, but more than we've done in the past!

  22. I love that you have these photos, so sweet! We always did dinners out, but this year we are doing it with another couple to change things up! Sometimes it's fun to have other parents/couples to commiserate with ;)

  23. I love the first picture of you two! And all of them, actually! Great story! We don't go all out for Valentine's Day, but we get little gifts and funny cards. This year we're going to watch episodes from the new season of House of Cards and order a heart-shaped pizza! lol
