A $300 Haircut (a big oops)

This weekend was such a nice one.  After a crazy previous weekend with St. Patricks Day and visitors, I was so looking forward to having absolutely nothing planned for a couple of days!

Friday I had the day off work and my big haircut scheduled.  I haven't cut any length off my hair in 5 years and have literally no color in it so as you can imagine, I was slightly nervous/anxious about making some big changes.  I arrive at my haircut and come to find out, my hair stylist (that I've been seeing for 2.5 years and totally trust) is sick and won't be back in for a couple of weeks.  Blah.  They offered another stylist, Joey, that had availability right then so I met with him and he seemed trustworthy enough so I decided to just go for it.  I ended up cutting about 5 inches off my hair and adding in some lower highlights and am so happy with it!

Buuuut - and this is a big but - after he finishes with everything, he walks me up to the register and tells me it will be $246.  My heart dropped.  I didn't even know a haircut/color could be so expensive!  My normal girl charges me $50!!!  I handed over my dignity debit card and said goodbye to Joey (forever).

My mistake that I didn't even think to ask him his prices but the salon could have at least either #1 put me with someone that charges similar pricing to that of my normal girl or #2 told me upfront how much it was going to cost.  I then of course had to tip him on top of that and the bill came out to a solid $300 - woof.  My first thought walking out was that Nick was going to murder me!  Thankfully, I love the haircut and I love the color but that was definitely a one time deal.

After that traumatizing experience, I walked home swearing to myself that I was not going to be buying anything for the next month.  I felt so bad about spending so much money on a HAIRCUT.  The rest of night was spent relaxing at home (for free) and hockey for Nick.

Saturday morning we slept in until 10:30, did some things around the house, went on a Target run and squeezed in a couple House of Cards eps in between naps - so basically it was a great day.  Nick left about 4 pm for his second hockey game of the weekend and we had plans for him to pick me up at 7:30 pm for our dinner date.

We headed to Smoque BBQ in Irving Park as we were craving ribs.  The first year we lived in Chicago we drove over to Smoque and there was a line out the door and down the street so we skipped it but we were determined to get some this time!

When we got there, there was still a line but it didn't look too bad.  It was a pretty casual place, super busy but with a fun atmosphere and the food - amazing.  I had a half slab of Baby Back Ribs with french fries and peach cobbler and Nick had brisket and Texas sausage with fries and baked beans (we love our fries).

Sunday morning meant alarms unfortunately.  Even more unfortunately was that it was snowing!  Nick had his third hockey game of the weekend and I had to be to work at 9am so we were up and at 'em for a busy day.

A perfect weekend - minus the way overpriced haircut!

  1. I can't believe they didn't even bother to tell you his prices or think to put you with someone with similar pricing. I mean $50 and $250 are not the same thing at ALL! At least your hair looks amazing. I get so nervous about new people doing my hair. With my luck I'd end up with a $300 bill and a crazy haircut.
Your weekend sounds like it was so nice! Are you on the first or second season of HoC? I loved the first season but the second was a little slower.

  2. Holy cow about the haircut!! I can't imagine how you felt haha. The rest of your weekend sounds great and love the haircut on you! :)

  3. Your hair looks gorgeous! One of my friends JUST had a similar experience, she ended up paying $240 at ulta!! It was the same thing, the girl that she had seen before never charged close to that much, so when she saw the total she was shocked! It's like 8am and those ribs look so good!

  4. I'm so happy that you liked your hair and it does look fabulous but girl I would call that manager and tell them what happened. Especially if your girl charges you way less....that situation seems a little off to me. They should tell you if you are going to be jumping up price points like that! Besides that the food looks amazing ;-)

  5. YIKES - sorry the haircut was so $$$ but it's really great that you liked it!! Totally agree with Amanda as well - maybe they can comp you some free products or something. So once you're caught up with the good wife - as in Sunday's episode email me...cause you're gonna freak!! That BBQ looks so good - sounds like a pretty great weekend!

  6. OMG! I used to pay $250 for haircuts including tips but I needed cuts and relaxer/perms to straighten my longish hair. I'm surprised they didn't give you a heads up that he charged far more than your usual stylist.

  8. Wow about the hair - and boo to the salon that didn't warn you or something. Is this Joey guy like a big name or something? At least you love it and won't do anything for awhile to it, right, ha?

  9. Oh em gee that price! WOW, how rude of them not to give you the heads up. Love how it looks though.

  10. I would have had a heart attack right there in the salon! Seriously. That seems really underhanded that they didn't ask you if bumping up to that price point would be ok. I hate how much hair can cost! I need highlights now, but really don't want to shell out the bucks! Aside from that little shocker, your weekend sounded amazing! :)

  11. Oh my gosh I would have cried. You really should I have said something, that is SUCH a rip off. Now that you're removed from it you should call and complain for sure. That's so ridiculous and unfair. You're hair looks great though!

  12. Well on the bright side, your hair looks amazing! I agree with you, though - the salon should have said something to you about the price increase with a different stylist. I probably would have keeled over there right at the salon counter. At least you're happy with it, though - it may have been a different story if you weren't! Sounds like you had a great weekend. :)

  13. What a fun weekend, I can not even believe the cost of that hair cut and what you must have thought when they told you the total! CRAZY. I'm wanting a change soon too, I need a major cut! I was thinking of doing that this upcoming weekend, hope mine's not $300 haha! Your hair looks fabulous. That bbq looks so good, would the joint in KC happen to be Oklahoma Joe's? Oh, and Saturday my eyes didn't even open until 10:45 am, which is NUTS! Must have been a good weekend for that ;)

  14. I would have passed out right there at the counter... $300?!?!?!? I want gold tips on my hair for that!
    You look good though! :)

  15. I'm glad you love your cut and color, despite the price tag! Smoque looks yummy, I've had it on my list of places to try since it was on Diner's Drive Ins and Dives. I'm a big fan of NC BBQ, but in a pinch I'm sure it'd do just fine!

  16. I'm glad you love your hair. I've yet to find a salon when I moved to Texas due to the fact they charge & arm & a leg & I can't bring myself to pay the price.

  17. GIRL, 300?! You are a trooper.... I don't know what I would have done! I wouldn't have wanted to look bad and been like what the hell!? But I sure would have been thinking that!

  18. Damn that Joey. Your hair sure looks pretty though! At least your regular girl will be back next time. And the BBQ hopefully helped with the buyer's remorse!?

  19. The haircut looks fab! But that price is crazy! And that BBQ looks soooo good! I've yet to try any Charlotte bbq since I've moved here and only get it when I'm home -- but this is making me want some right now!

  20. Your hair looks gorgeous but the salon really should not have done that! So sneaky! Sounds like you had a fabulous weekend (minus working!)

  21. Still can't believe that happened to you but love the way it looks!

Where are you guys at now with House of Cards? I don't want to watch them all, then there's none left!

  22. I've def had the same thing happen with my hair...you never think to ask as they are going! Well the good thing is that you actually like the results! I have paid a ton of money before to hate the results...so much pain! I can't wait to make that seafood pasta! Love TJs!

  23. Woof is right to $300 dollars! Oh man good thing you like it but I would have had some serious sticker shock!! It really does look pretty though!

  24. I love your new hair but that salon was just down right rude I think!! They SO should have done what you said and been up front with you! What the heck!?!?! Who does that and who feels that its right to charge you that much!?! :(

  25. Your hair looks amazing! However, I commend you for showing much restrain. Have you called and inquired? Most salons will work with you-you might get your next cut free or something similar. The only reason I ask is my girl is about $100 for cut/color and when she is sick, they make sure to put me with someone comparable. I'm sorry.

  26. $246?!?! That makes me want to cry..
    Glad you love it though!

  27. Ouch!! The salon really should have clued you in on the HUGE price increase of the new stylist. It's kind of amazing that there's such a large range of prices charged by the stylists. Lesson learned and I'm SO glad that you got a great color/cut for Spring!!

  28. I'm a bit annoyed with blogger because the way I read my blogs isn't refreshing yours so I'm always a few days behind. Ugh! Your hair looks great but oh.my.word. I felt sick for you!!!!

  29. Your hair looks awesome but $300??? Maybe it's just the area I live in but I can't even imagine two stylist working at the same salon being able to charge that different of prices. They should have definitely let you know, girl! And those ribs look amazing!

  30. Oh my WORD. I think I would have cried, not gonna lie. Your hair looks fabulous but I feel so bad that they ripped you off like that... at least the rest of your weekend was good!! :)

    xo Always, Abby

  31. Oh my goodness I would have been terrified at a pricetag like that! I'm used to salons where the salons sets the prices but I know at some places stylists set their own prices. Ouch! I'm gonna go get a haircut at my $20 salon today and hope nothing of this sort ever happens to me!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well, your hair looks GREAT! I have had a similar experience, and it is the all-time worst feeling :( Hopefully the haircut will last for a while! Sometimes it can be so awkward to ask prices at salons, too - they should really do something about that, ha!

  33. WOW! I'd be furious! At least it was a great cut and color :)
