Beauty Product Fails

I love makeup.  I have so much fun with it and I love trying new products.  But is there anything worse than spending your hard earned money on (overpriced) makeup only to find out the product does nothing for you?  This exact reason is why I really only purchase makeup from Sephora or Ulta.  Their return policies are amazing - even if you've used a product, they will take it back.  Don't have the receipt?  You get store credit.  No questions asked and they don't make you feel bad about it at all.  While thankfully I love 95% of the products I buy - thanks to the obsessive amount of research I put in before purchasing - here are a few products that literally did nothing or caused problems for me.

+ Josie Maran Argan Oil Hair Serum
After falling in love with Josie Maran's pure argan oil, I wanted to try the hair serum.  The product looked great upon application - provided shine, smoothed flyaways, made ends look healthier - but five minutes later all of that was gone and it looked like I had put nothing in my hair.  The hair serum usually comes with a hot oil mask that you use in the shower which again, unfortunately did nothing for me.

+ Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Dark Circle Eye Roller
I had high hopes for this product.  It claimed to decrease puffiness under eyes and that its sheer tint would cover up some of those dark bags.  I didn't think that this would provide full coverage but I only planned on using it on "no makeup" days.  However, it wasn't even worth the time to put on because it is SO sheer that it does nothing.  I will say that the eye roller does feel really great - just doesn't seem to provide any actual benefit.

+ Benefit's Watt's Up Highlighter
I'm a huge fan of Benefit products but Watt's Up just made my face look awkwardly shiny because it didn't blend very well.  Almost like I was back in 6th grade again and had just dusted sparkles on my face.  Not quite the look I'm going for!

+ Wen Cleansing Conditioner
I was obsessed with Wen for a long time before I realized it was causing my hair to fall out.  I even continued to use it after I realized what was happening, that is how much I loved it.  I wrote a full blog post on my experience with Wen HERE.

+ Diorshow Mascara
I was so excited to try this product because mascara is my favorite beauty product and everyone RAVES about this stuff!  While this product does separate and fan your eyelashes well, it goes on so lightly that it takes like 10 coats to get to the point that it even looks like I'm wearing mascara.  Compared to my holy grail, Benefit's They're Real, it's not worth my time.

+ Makeup Forever HD Foundation
I bought this stuff and absolutely loved it.  Until I woke up the first morning after wearing it and realized it caused an allergic reaction to my skin.  It was not pretty!  My face was swollen, red and had dermatitis all over.  It immediately went back and my face returned to normal about 4 days and 25 Benadryl tablets later.  Yikes.

+ Benefit's Erase Paste Concealer
Erase Paste provides impressive coverage but they need to offer it in more than 3 colors.  My skin is in between the fair and medium shades and as much as I want/try to use this product, it never looks right on me.

+ Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel
Oompa loompa status is all that needs to be said here.

+ Stila Lip Glaze
I seriously don't understand these!  The twist system has to be the worst ever (I always have way too much product coming out), they make your lips feel sticky and the color that shows up on your lip never seems to match the color in the tube.  These just confuse me.

+ Chi 44 Iron Guard Heat Protector
One of my friends swears by this so I bought some for myself.  I haven't tried too many heat protectors so I'm not sure if this is how they are or just how this particular product was but it made my hair stiff and sticky.  That's the last thing I want to deal with on my freshly washed hair!  This stuff went straight into the trash after two uses.

Obviously everyone has different hair and skin needs so products aren't going to work the same for every single person.  What has been your worst beauty product fail?

  3. First off - we totally had the same thing going on in today's posts lol!! Could not agree with you more on the garnier eye roller - it does NOTHING!! I'm so sad you're between colors for erase paste - it's my favorite!! Dior Show is another one that's been really good to me - but I'm loving Benefits They're Real!! It really is amazing! Haven't tried Wen and never will after your review lol! Totally agree on Stila as well- its so sticky after application - no bueno!

  4. I can't believe you had an allergic reaction to the MUFE HD foundation! You poor thing. I tried that years ago, and although I didn't have a reaction to it, I just didn't care for it (shame since it photographs beautifully). If you're looking for a heat protector, try the Tresseme one from the drugstore! It's my holy grail, and your hair won't be sticky.

  5. Thanks for your thoughts. It's nice to know not every product is perfect and I won't waste my time.

  6. Couldn't agree more on the eye roller, Watt's up and Wen! Thanks for the heads up on the Erase paste. I love that Ulta and Sephora are so great about taking things back, makes it way easier to try stuff out :)

  8. I've been eyeing that HD foundation too but it's interesting your face broke out. Obviously I'm not sure mine would but still interesting to note! Thanks for sharing these fails, they are super helpful next time I'm browsing through Ulta :)

  10. Glad to know about that dark under eye pen... I've almost bought it a few times.
Yep - we bought the Wen & that was a waste... didn't do ANYTHING like the ads show.

  11. I've been loving the JM hair oil-- though I've not tried the regular argan oil! My only complaint is that I feel like I have to use a lot of it, which is unusual for an oil-- but then again I have a lot of hair so I think that's part of it! I tried the green version of that garnier eye roller & I felt like it did nothing as well! I think my biggest recent makeup fail was the revlon colorstay foundation! I thought I would love it, but it applied really cakey on me and broke me out a lot :(

  12. I've tried a lot of Stila's products, and none of them have worked well for me. For lip glazes, I tend to stick with anything from Makeup Forever now - their lipsticks are SO hydrating!

  15. This is such a great post! You should try Moroccan Oil for your hair, the original. So many brands have tried to duplicate it but none even come close, and now they make a light version that I just LOVE. I got a sample of the Watt's Up but I don't see it working for me. My skin is the same way and benefit is actually one of my favorite brands, I hated Erase Paste because it was SO THICK and creased like crazy!

  16. Thanks for sharing! I've never used any of these products but I'll make sure to stay clear of them.

  17. I am a fan of Erase Paste but I agree that it needs to come in more shades!

  18. Is it bad that I like hearing about fails sometimes more than glowing reviews? I sometimes really want to know what I shouldn't buy! Thanks for this honest post ;-)

  21. I remember your post about wen! I knew there had to be something wrong with it! I've always wondered if that eye roller worked. Glad to hear your review and I know I didn't waste my money on it!

  22. Thanks for sharing! Some of those are so pricy too!! They are such scammers, I've contemplated trying some so glad to know not to spend my money!

  23. Love this post! Everyone always shares the things that they love, but very few think to share the products that DON'T work for them - which I am just as interested in, as I hate to waste money on products that aren't that great. I almost bought Benefit's Watts Up, but decided at last minute to go with High Beam, and I am so glad I did! I don't want anything glittery looking near this face. No thanks!!!

  24. Can I just say that I LOVE that you share this because you are saving girls all over the world like me! Who know nothing about the slightest bit of make-up!

  25. I am cracking up reading this because no one ever posts when things stink! I totally agree on most of these too! Wen - biggest fail! Seriously, you are SO spot on!! I love it keep it coming!!

  26. Love these reviews - here's the deal I feel the same way. Hate spending the money if I don't know it's legit. Glad to know about the roll-on eye fixer. This girl has bags for days, but if that doesn't work then I won't waste my time. And happy to get your review on Dior mascara - I swear by their concealer, but I'm a Loreal mascara girl through and through. BUT had heard a lot about their mascara lately and thought I needed to give it a try. Now I'm not gonna. :)
