A Week of Fun in the Sun

**This is my 150th blog post!  Pretty crazy!  I had no idea when I started if I would enjoy or keep up with blogging but it's safe to say I'm obsessed.  Here's to another 150 and many more!**

We had an amazing trip to Florida last week.  It was SO relaxing and the weather was perfect.  I'll keep this (kind of) short because everyday looked a little something like this: swim, tan, eat, sleep, repeat.  My kind of week!  Forgive the crappy picture quality, I realized I forgot my camera on the way to the airport so iPhone camera it was!

Nick and I flew out of O'Hare bright and early Saturday morning.  We made it out of town without delays thankfully.  We had a short layover in Minneapolis (it makes no sense to head further north before we headed down south.. Nick liked to remind me of that the whole way there) and arrived in Fort Myers, FL about 3:30.  We picked up our bags and rental car and headed to the house my family had rented for the week.

This house was so great!  It was close to a beach but we spent the majority of our time in the backyard.  We had the perfect pool, hot tub and lounge chairs.. why bother leaving?  The house backed up to a canal so we were able to do some fishing and hang out on the little tiki hut on our dock.  The house itself was huge which is very much needed when you have two adults, five kids and a little dog.

As soon as we arrived to the house, it was swim suits on and pool time!  We spent the evening swimming, grilling and catching up with my family.  It was so great to see them since we hadn't all been together since Christmas.  We called it a night pretty early since we had been up since dark traveling.

Sunday morning was another beautiful day.  We literally spent the entire day in our backyard - swimming, napping and consuming lots of tropical drinks!

My brother was the last one to arrive and Nick and my dad went to pick him up from the airport around dinner time.  When they came back we had dinner and then played some volleyball in the front yard.  We worked up quite a sweat since it was 85 degrees so we decided an evening swim was called for!  While in the pool, we were still hitting the volleyball around and someone got a little crazy and hit the volleyball all the way out into the canal!  We tried to grab it with the pool cleaner and fishing poles but it was just too far out there.  Luckily Nick and Carley came up with a plan to get the ball back!

I'm sure you can imagine what Monday consisted of, right?  :)  More pool time, eating, games and fun.  The boys and I decided to venture over to Fort Myers Beach that night to do some bar hopping.  We started at the Lani Kai.. anyone ever heard of that place?  When I went to FMB in high school for spring break, Lani Kai was the "cool" place to party.  All these years later, I had to stop there and finally check it out.  Well... the place was disgusting.  And I mean nasty!  We had one drink and then headed on our way down the beach.  We had a few more drinks at a rooftop bar when we decided to call it a night due to some sprinkles.

Tuesday was our rainy day.  I never mind having a rainy day on vacation because those always mean we get to spend the day shopping.  The rain held off in the morning but we still got ready and headed into Naples.  My grandparents used to live in Naples so we have lots of favorite places to stop when we visit.  We headed to Rode's to stock up some of their famous key lime juice and then to The Best of Everything, a giant jewelry store.  I've been to the BOE a few times now but this was the busiest I had ever seen it!  You could barely look at any of the jewelry.  I ended up getting a gorgeous pair of earrings and then we got out of there.  It was crazy.

Our next stop was the Miromar Outlet Mall.  We spend a day there every time we're in Southwest Florida.  The rain started as soon as we got there and it down poured.  The temperature dropped like 10 degrees and it was pretty chilly!  We spent a few hours checking out the stores and trying to stay dry.  I was a total shopping failure and ended up only getting a floppy beach hat!  Around dinner time, we headed back to the house to eat and spent the night eating ice cream and having a Criminal Minds marathon.

Wednesday morning we woke up to sun and birds chirping!  We were ready to get back in our swimsuits.  Nick and I were up pretty early so we decided to do some fishing off our canal.  Nick got two catfish and I caught a little sheephead (or something like that).

It was still pretty windy and a little cooler due to the previous day's storms so we relaxed on the lounge chairs and just hung out.  This is where I made my BIG mistake.  It was still pretty early in the morning and the clouds were off and on so I didn't even think about sunscreen.  Luckily my face lotion has SPF in it but I was sitting outside in shorts and a sweatshirt - my legs unprotected.  I didn't realize it at the time but I was getting seriously burnt.  The weather finally warmed up and the clouds cleared so we were able to spend the rest of the day in the sun (even better for my legs haha).

As I was showering that night before dinner, the sunburn began to set in (that always seems to happen after a shower)!  We headed to a local tiki bar for dinner and then had plans to head to the dog tracks in town to do some betting on the races.  My legs were on FIRE at dinner and they were killing me.  I was starting to feel those chills you get when you have a sunburn so I went to the bathroom to pull up my maxi dress so I could check out my legs and I kind of freaked out!  They were sooo red and blotchy and literally hot to the touch.  Definitely the worst sunburn I've ever had.  After dinner, my family headed out to the dog tracks and Nick and I went back to the house to get some aloe and aspirin for my legs.  I wasn't feeling that great and it hurt to even walk so we decided to just call it a night and hang out at home.  At least we had this guy to keep us company!

Thursday was Nick and I's last day in Florida and it was a beautiful one.  We packed all our stuff up as soon as we woke up so we could spend the day outside.  Although I had to spend the day with a towel wrapped around my legs, we still made the most of our time left. We swam, played volleyball, ate a delicious dinner and drank a few final tropical drinks before heading to the airport later that night.  Despite the airport actually losing power before our flight, we made it out of Fort Myers on time and arrived in Chicago about 10pm.

We had a wonderful trip and are so thankful to my family for making it possible!  It wasn't quite as hard to leave knowing that we will be heading back down there in a couple of months.  Nick has a work conference in Orlando so we are going to make it a mini vacation.  Come on June!  :)

  2. Ahhh everything looks so gorgeous! It looks like you were in some kind of tropical oasis the entire time- so pretty! Sunburns like that are the absolute worse! Growing up I never burned but we went to Mexico when I was in high-school and it was my first time in "southern sun" & I got SO burnt I was miserable-- my family still doesn't let me live it down! I love your cover up in the last picture of you guys!

  9. Can't wait til you guys come to Orlando ;-)

That pool looks fabulous! I would have barely left the house too! And loving that purple bathing suit... super cute! Hope your legs are feeling better, as much as I advocate practicing safe sun and try my best to protect myself we all get burnt from time to time especially on vacay when we're more relaxed.

  20. Well that sounds like an amazing trip! Too bad about the outlet mall and best of everything :( great shopping opportunities and both busts. I guess it was spring break time so guess it's all packed! What a cool idea to rent a house...that pool looked so fun! And hilarious pic of getting the volleyball. It's so fun to read your post because I know exactly where everything is :) That dog track is literally a mile away from where my parent live, and we used to go there as kids. "Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere goes Sparky!" lol. Good times.
