My Wedding: 10 Things I Would Do All Over Again

It's so hard to believe that we're coming up on ONE YEAR of being married!  Where is the time going?!  I've already recapped our wedding but thought it would be fun to recap my favorite things about the day and what worked so well for me.  It was easy since our wedding day was pretty much perfection in my eyes!  Here are the top 10 things I would do all over again...

ONE | Night Before Sleep Over
A few of my bridesmaids and I kicked my family out and took over the house the night before the wedding only because of convenience - none of us live in the town I got married in, my hometown.  However, it ended up being one of my favorite parts of my wedding weekend!  After the rehearsal dinner, we changed into pajamas, drank wine and stayed up late talking.  It was nice to be 100% relaxed going into the biggest day of my life.

TWO | Hair & Makeup Done At Home
We skipped the salon and had two stylists come right to our house.  It was amazing to not have to worry about transportation and scheduling and all that hassle.  Instead, we just chilled out in our robes, mimosa's in hand!  We were actually ahead of schedule all day thanks to how smoothly the morning went.

THREE | Airbrush Makeup & Clip-In Extensions
I really can't say enough positive things about airbrush makeup.  I had my makeup done about 11am and it still looked flawless 14 hours later - honestly even when I woke up the next morning!  It looked amazing in photos and it didn't even feel like I had makeup on.  Sometimes layers of foundation can make your skin feel heavy but not this stuff.

I also had a few clip-in extensions put in which I was hesitant about but ended up being SO thankful that I did!  They made my hair look fuller and by the end of the night, my own hair was stick straight but thank goodness it wasn't noticeable thanks to my extensions that still held a perfect curl!

FOUR | Doing a First Look
This is very much a personal choice but for Nick and I, it was the right one.  Seeing him before the ceremony calmed my nerves and made me feel way more comfortable.  It also allowed us to take upwards of 200+ group pictures beforehand and not have such a large gap between the ceremony and reception.  Our first look was such a special moment in itself and I really don't think it took a single emotion away from walking down the aisle.

FIVE | Picking Out Our Own Wedding Bands
I know lots of people like to surprise their spouse on their wedding day with their bands but Nick and I both wanted to pick ours out for ourselves.  I had absolutely no say in my engagement ring as we had never talked about rings before (thank goodness he did a good job!) so I was excited to pick out a band.  He was also very specific with what wedding band he wanted so it worked out for both of us and made for a fun day a few months before the wedding.

SIX | Master & Mistress of Ceremony
A Master & Mistress of Ceremony are two people that (you trust with your life) act as "day-of wedding coordinators".  We asked two family members and their job was to be the contact for all of our vendors that day, were at both the church and reception while everything was being set up and handled all those last minute details that allowed my family and I to have a stress-free day!  Having a M&M was honestly one of the best wedding decisions I made, hands down.

SEVEN | Wearing Wedges
I know, wedges are the last shoe you think of when you think of a bridal shoe.  BUT, I happen to think it's a very overlooked shoe option that is perfect for your big day!  It gives you a bit of a heel while still being extremely sturdy - at only 5'2", I need some height but did not want to be tripping down the aisle.  My BCBG wedges were extremely comfortable and even though I forgot to break them in, they didn't even need it!

EIGHT | Having A Family Friend Marry Us
I knew I wanted to get married in the church I attended growing up and I was hoping that our pastor whose been extremely close to my family would be willing to marry us.  Thankfully he was and it made the whole wedding weekend run smoother having someone my entire family felt comfortable with.  Our pastor actually had to go to the ER the night before our wedding after the rehearsal due to a food allergy and didn't even tell any of us until after the wedding ceremony -- he was such a trooper!

NINE | DJ Playlist
I know my friends and I know what songs we like - the ones that will get everyone going - "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey, "Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown Band, "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond and "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks to name a few.  I created a playlist that was long enough for the entire wedding and while some people told me I was being a bit of a control freak ;), my DJ realized that everyone loved those songs and so he never strayed!

TEN | A Day Off
I thought I would always want to leave the morning after my wedding BUT I am so glad I did not!  Especially since we got married in Michigan and flew out for our honeymoon from Chicago, I could not imagine being ready to go the day after the wedding.  Sunday for us was reserved for saying goodbye to family and friends, driving back to Chicago (that sucked), packing (talk about last minute) and overall getting our lives together.  We left Monday morning for our Hawaiian honeymoon (read about that here!) and it was perfect timing.

And obviously, the one thing I would do a billion times over is marry Nick :)  So sappy.  A wedding lasts for a day but a marriage is for a lifetime so don't stress too much over planning for the 'perfect' day - it'll be perfect no matter what happens!

  1. Oh I totally agree with all of these and what a great post!! Would be interesting to read what you would have done differently haha!! We actually did the same thing with our honeymoon and left two days after the wedding -so much less stress!!

  2. Oh my gosh your wedding looked absolutely perfect. And you are flawless! I agree 100% with getting all of your hair and makeup done at the house. It makes for a great wedding morning!

  3. Loved the photo share and think that giving the DJ a list of must-plays (or the entire playlist) is a great plan!

  4. What a great post! I totally love it and will be doing one sometime in the future too. Isn't it funny NOT having wedding stuff to do? I mean, I love not HAVING to do something, but it was fun being so excited all the time.

  5. this is a fabulous post - what a great idea (might steal it!). I agree with so many of your items as well, as we did the same thing.

  6. I made my entire play list too - so OCD but so awesome! It is YOUR wedding so you should get to hear what YOU want! The day off before the honeymoon is also key. I had such a wedding hangover - all of that dancing and talking left me voiceless and sore! You were such a stunning bride!!!

  7. Your wedding looked beuatiful! I love the idea of a girls sleepover and makeup and hair at home! Well I actually love all of the things you listed haha. And I understand about having post-wedding blues...I've been married six years and would love a chance to do it all over again. My wedding today would look so much different than it did then :)

  8. Yes! So many great ideas! We had five or six days between our wedding and honeymoon, which I worried would be kind of weird at first because my husband had to go back to work for a couple of days, but it was actually kind of nice to get everything in order and not feel rushed! I'm definitely with you on the shoe thing-- I actually wore a dressy flat sandal since our entire wedding was outside and I didn't want any chance of sinking in the grass or any tripping, haha! I love all of your photos! Everyone looked so gorgeous!

  9. Having a Master & Mistress of Ceremony is such a WONDERFUL idea!!! That is definitely something I will be looking into for mine. I already know I'll be a control freak with my wedding play list as well. I definitely know already what songs I don't want played! Haha

  11. I just love reading about your wedding and seeing pics, so beautiful! We had a day between our wedding and honeymoon too and it was perfect. We spent some time seeing off family and opening gifts ;)

  12. This is a great post idea! I agree with you on most things - I did end up doing my own makeup, but that's because I practiced and was confident in what I was doing. Plus, we did go to a salon instead of having people come to my parent's house, and I didn't like the makeup that was used at the salon (I had a trial ... it was a disaster). We also had a day between the wedding and leaving for our honeymoon - it was so relaxing! I'm pretty sure Ryan watched football all day, and I took a long, overdue nap. :)

  13. Love this :) We picked our own wedding bands + have a family friend as our minister too!! You looked so gorgeous girl! Xx.

  14. I did airbrush makeup as well, and had the stylists come to the bridal suite which was soooooo much more convenient than going to the salon. Oh and the first look YES! So glad we did one of those :-D

  15. I loved everything about this post. I NEEDED to read this! I'm getting married in October and plan on doing all of these things. We are waiting two days before leaving for honeymoon, my girls are staying with me night before the wedding, I have already created a song list for the DJ, and I'm totally doing first look before we walk down the aisle! I had never heard of the masters thing either, but my mom is having two friends help out for the day of! :)

  16. Love all these suggestions! I actually did a few of these! Had a sleepover with two friends the night before, did a first look, & took day off to spend with family & friends for the honeymoon! Wouldn't have done it any other way!

  20. It's wonderful to be able to list so many things that you loved so much you'd do them the exact same way! My favorite part was where you said 'A wedding lasts for a day but a marriage is for a lifetime...' So true!

  21. Being a wedding photographer, I can't tell you how many things I agree with.
    * the shoes - YES YES YES... make them comfortable, but still with a heel
    * Prepping at home - the ease of it makes everything better!!!
    * FIRST LOOK - please - every time! Its so hard to rush after the ceremony to get bride & groom shots!
    * Air brushed make up... I've seen people do their own & its all faded by the time the ceremony is here.
    You preach girl! :)

  22. What a gorgeous wedding - and bride and groom obvi! Picking out the music is a definite must. I SO wish we didn't leave early the morning after our wedding hah. Hello, hangover on an airplane - not advisable!

  23. Love this list!! Getting hair and makeup done at the house as well as airbrush was the best! So conviniant.

  24. We did a first look too and I am SO glad we did! I was so nervous already that I can't imagine not seeing Ben before the ceremony, that would have been crazy! We had a day in between our wedding and honeymoon too, sort of. We had the same scenario as you (got married in our hometown, not where we lived). We planned that day to go home to Florida and get ready before we left for our honeymoon, but we didn't live in Florida anymore by the time we got married! So instead we just got to relax and shop and go crazy at Crate and Barrel with all our wedding money. It was pretty fun, it was almost like a pre-honeymoon!

  25. I agree with ALL of these things!
My husband and I took a day off before we left for our honeymoon in Maui as well, and it was the best decision!
Man, now I wish I could go back in time and do it all over again!

  26. Great list. I agree with you on all of them. #1 had to be pretty special and the M&M thing is brilliant!! :) Only think I would change is leave day after honeymoon but come back one day early before work.

  31. I had an M&M but she called herself "Julie's bitch girl" instead. She didn't complain though, however I found out later on she was mad I didn't put her in the actual wedding but we had just family and that's just how it went.

  32. Love your list! And girlfriend, I've been married 3 years and STILL sometimes think about things I was doing in spring of 2011 getting ready for our May wedding - such fun memories! Your hair and makeup look amazing - those are definitely worthy to be on your list! We had a day-of coordinator as well, and she also oversaw the rehearsal which was awesome - I definitely second that one on your list.

  33. Love this! I need to get my butt into high gear...going to work meetings today makes me realize that the big day isn't toooo far away!

  34. Okay so this is just the sweetest post. I love all of your details and IF {that's a BIG if} I ever get married, I'll be sending him straight to this post to see that ring. If I could dream of an engagement ring, yours is it. So gorgeous!

  38. I agree with most of these, especially airbrush makeup! It looked great in photos and lasted the entire wedding (and actually the next day too..) even through me crying several times through my wedding day! I also agree about picking the DJs songs.. I knew the guests at the wedding (obviously) so I knew what would get everyone excited and dance, so even though it was kind of a pain, it was worth it!
