Five on Friday 5/9

Time for Five on Friday!  I know I sound like a broken record... but seriously, where are the weeks going?

+ Thank you, thank YOU for all of your sweet comments regarding our big news I shared on Wednesday!  I so appreciate all of the congratulations and thoughtful advice.  We are beyond excited and you can only imagine the amount of online house hunting and home inspiration "pinning" that has been going on over here :)

+ I made this Watergate Salad for our housewarming/engagement/birthday/Kentucky Derby/Cinco de Mayo party last weekend and it was SO good.  We had some leftovers and I've been eating it all week.. I like to consider it healthy because it has pineapple in it ;)  The only thing I changed about the recipe was adding a jar of maraschino cherries.  It's a super easy and delicious side to bring to all those summer BBQ's!

+ As I'm sure you can tell, I only use my iPhone to take pictures for the blog.  I'm thinking it's time to step up my game and invest in a nice one aka a DSLR.  I've been checking them out online but the options are just a little overwhelming.  I want something that takes decent pictures but is easy to use and not too bulky to cart around.  Any recommendations?

+ This.  Hilarious.  Nick and I have been slowly working our way through House of Cards and we only have one episode left!

+ I've been looking forward to this weekend for a while now!  My family is coming to visit and we have a sort of food/bar crawl planned for tomorrow.  We want to hit lots of the typical Chicago stops.. among them a Chicago style hot dog and pizza, a new cupcake ATM (yes, this is a real thing), and drinks at the John Hancock.  Best of all, it looks like the weather is going to cooperate with us!  I'll be back with a full recap next week but in the mean time, follow along on Instagram @ ka5ohare!

Happy Friday!

Picking a camera can be overwhelming! I have the Canon T3i and got a great bundle deal at Costco 2 years ago.

  14. Ahhh did you end up liking House of Cards??! I'm so ready for the third season-- even though I'm pretty sure it's a full year away still! That first picture made me laugh-- soo true, though I'm trying to move away from wishing for the weekends so much!

  15. A DSLR will take awesome pictures! I kind of doubt that we'll ever upgrade to one because we don't like how big they are to carry around, I'll just stick with a point-and-shoot.

  16. That salad sounds so good, and I'm jealous of your upcoming weekend, how fun! I love my Canon T3, it's not small though and yes they are overwhelming haha. Nothing made sense to me until I took a class. Have a great weekend girl!

  17. Ahhh I'm getting a camera this weekend! My birthday is in a couple of weeks, and my sweet mama is letting me find my perfect match and have it early. I can't wait -- though I'm with you, the choices are overwhelming! I'll let you know what I pick!
xo to you -- have a wonderful weekend!

  18. Oh my word that salad!!! I think I could eat my body weight in Watergate salad. So. Stinking. Good.!

I have a Canon Rebel XTi (not overly fancy), and I like it! The lens is what really makes a difference for me... For portraits, I like a 50mm lens (you can find some for like $100).

    Have a great weekend!

  20. I'm so glad you've jumped on the HOC train - that show is just too good not to binge watch!! Let me know what you decide with the camera - so many options and they're all so $$$$!!! Have an awesome weekend!

  21. Have fun with your family this weekend! Sounds like you have a lot of fun plans!
I wish I could give you good camera advice, but mine is old! But I do hear frequently that it's more about the lens!

  22. Oh my gosh that Chicago crawl sounds amazing!! Yay for a great weekend of weather. Finally! We deserve it. I totally laughed at that "Better Days' poster :) Have a fun one!

  23. I think you would get good use out of a nice camera. Just know it is kind of a waste of money if you don't have photoshop and know how to work photoshop because the great pics you see online (i.e., blogs) are from editing and not the actual pic. Also, I got one so I could step up my game and quit paying photogs for good family and Pres photo sessions and it does just that-- but in terms of every day pic, beach trips, etc. I never pull it out-- always the IPHONE!

  24. I just got a Canon T3 for Christmas and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! It's pretty affordable since there are newer models and it's really user friendly for a newbie photog :) We are also in the midst of on-line house hunting for an upcoming move and I'd HIGHLY recommend getting the Zillow app for your phone. It's so easy to use and their mobile site seemed far superior to other options. Hope you have a great weekend.

  25. When you figure out your DSLR please share! I need one so bad, but I have no idea what to look for!

  26. I'm a Nikon girl myself. I have a D40x, which is pretty old by camera standards, but I'm looking at the D5200 as an upgrade. I think it's pretty much all personal preference. I hope you can find one you like. Happy Friday.

  27. Oh man, the turkey dogs I was planning on us grilling for dinner just started to look a lot more tempting after this last pic hah. Have a wonderful weekend with your parents. Um, food crawl every weekend, please!?

  28. bahahhahahaha that's how I felt when it came to binge watching Homeland ;-) I have the Canon Rebel T4i and love it! I got it at Costco in a bundle pack :)

  29. I have the Canon Rebel T4i as well and I love it! I highly suggest purchasing an "nifty 50" lens with it. They run about $100 but it's my favorite prime lens to use.

  30. I'm a Nikon girl :) Find what you want & stick with it because once you start buying lenses, you don't want to change.

  32. I have a Canon Eos Rebel and love it! I feel like it is a great DSLR for non professionals. Have a delicious weekend! xo

  33. Oh, please let me know what kind of camera you end up with. I'm shopping for one too and SO CONFUSED.

  34. I love the sign about better days. I'm totally with you about marathons, I'll watch almost any show as long as I can watch them back to back. I was sad when we finished House of Cards, I want more!

  35. Call me not normal but I couldn't eat half of that on that dog because just icky! I guess I'm picky. What other places are you hitting up?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I can't wait to see all your IG pics from your family food crawl tomorrow! What a fun idea. Also, I use the Canon Rebel T5i, and I couldn't be happier with it, considering I am a novice photographer and still figuring things out. And, again - congrats on the big move! So happy for you both. :)
