Food Crawl 2014

This weekend was fun and nonstop - the best kind of weekend that completely wipes you out.  My family was in town and we totally took advantage of all things Chicago.  Friday was a typical day before visitors arrive - cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning!  I had to work later in the day and by the time I got home at 9:30, nothing sounded better than a hot shower and the couch.  Nick got home from his hockey game around midnight and we headed to bed.

My family arrived on Saturday morning at about 10:30 and we started the day off with a trip to an old furniture warehouse, Urban Remains, in Ukranian Village.  There were lots of interesting finds but the prices were outrageous!  Think $500+ for an old door.  Yes, a door.  After realizing we couldn't buy something in there even if we pooled our money, we decided to head out on our food crawl.  We wanted to hit all of our favorite spots and try a few new ones.

The first stop was the Wiener Circle (ever seen the TV show?) in Lincoln Park for some traditional Chicago dogs - hold the ketchup.  It was a seriously beautiful day, around 75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.  Perfect weather for traipsing around the city.  We enjoyed our dogs outside at a picnic table before our next stop of McDonald's for some good ol' fashioned Diet Coke.

The rest of our stops we wanted to make were all off Michigan Avenue so we jumped in a cab and headed down there.  One rule of our food crawl was that every meal must include dessert (duh) so we were on a mission to find Chicago's newest addition of a CUPCAKE ATM!  Best invention ever.  How cute is this thing?!  We got two of Sprinkles famous red velvet with cream cheese frosting cupcakes and headed over to the Drake Hotel to enjoy them.  And they were good.  I was a little worried that they might be stale but they were so fresh and beyond delicious.  Thank goodness there isn't a cupcake ATM in my neighborhood because it would probably become a frequent stop!

We left the Drake and decided we needed to walk off our sugar buzz.  We did some shopping at the Water Tower Place and some shops on Michigan Avenue but surprisingly didn't buy anything.  There is a first for everything!  We hit up a lot of the home shops (Crate & Barrel, Room & Board, etc) as Nick and I are trying to get a feel for the type of things we would want in our house!  This arbor is a must and Nick has informed me that he will build it himself for $75.  We'll see about that.

fter a couple of hours of shopping, it was time for drinks.  We headed to the Ivy Hotel where I had my bachelorette party last summer!  They have an amazing rooftop so we relaxed on the couches, enjoyed the views (that may have included a man in his thong on his balcony.. lovely) and sipped on some refreshing cocktails.  This was my dad's first time on a downtown rooftop and he was obsessed!

Since it had been more than two hours since we'd eaten (ha) and dinner time was approaching, we decided it was time for our next meal!  We were originally planning on getting deep dish pizza but decided there was no way we could stomach that much food on our crawl.  Since the Cheesecake Factory was one of our stops we wanted to make for a slice of their famous cheesecake, we decided to combine a couple stops and have dinner there.  Fried zucchini, hawaiian pizza, club sandwiches and this baby was on the menu.  So, so good.

Once again, we had to walk off our meal so we did strolled down Michigan Ave doing some people watching.  We also popped into Home Goods and Trader Joe's (and tried some samples, what is wrong with us?) before checking out another rooftop, per my dad's request.  We decided to try out the Trump Tower, our final stop of the night.  I've heard so many things about the terrace at the Trump but had yet to visit.  We headed up to the 16th floor and were pretty much blown away by the views.  The drinks were ridiculously expensive ($20 a pop) but it was worth it.  We took a bunch of pictures and watched the sunset before calling it a night and literally rolling back to our apartment.  "Full" doesn't even begin to describe the state of my stomach at that point.  A food crawl + fresh air can really wipe you out - we were in bed by 10 pm... on a Saturday!

Sunday morning brought breakfast at our favorite local spot and another nice stroll around the neighborhood.  We were so tired from Saturday but when it's 75 degrees out, you just feel bad sitting inside!  After we said goodbye to my family, we did some grocery shopping, made a yummy dinner and dessert, Nick had a hockey game and we settled in to watch Mad Men and finish up House of Cards.  The perfect end to a crazy fun weekend :)

Happy Monday!

  11. That food crawl is the best idea ever!!! Love food and trying new things - I need to see if we have anything like this.

And the Sprinkles cupcake ATM? We found one in LA last summer and it was the best invention I've ever seen! After money cupcakes might be the best thing to come out of an ATM in my mind.

Seriously, that pic of Bora Bora is just making me go crazy - that is definitely on our travel bucket list for sure.

  24. Furniture stores crack me up sometimes, like are they serious with those prices or do they just have hidden cameras so they can laugh at people's reactions later...?
Your food and bar crawl sounds seriously amazing. I can't get over the cupcake ATM!
