Rib Fest 2014

Thank you to everyone for your kind words yesterday.  They meant so much to me and the sweet messages really helped brighten a difficult day.  Since I always have Monday's off of work, I made it a "me" day.  I went for a long walk, hit up the Bath and Body Works semi annual sale (and scored big), caught up on some of my TV shows and at night Nick and I went to the Detroit Tigers v. Chicago White Sox baseball game.  Overall it was a good day.  I am so blessed to have made so many true friends from blogging and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

Now let's rewind a little bit to this past weekend!  It was spent two different ways.  The first half was fun and the second half was... work.  Boo.  But despite the 11 hour workday on Sunday, it was still a beautiful summer weekend!

Friday night, Nick had hockey so I entertained myself by ordering take out sushi, a little at home spa pampering and a Scandal marathon.  It was pure perfection.  I'm thinking this may become my new Friday routine when Nick is busy because it was a great way to kick off the weekend.

On Saturday morning, we slept in until 10am!  We had went to bed at 11pm so the sleep was obviously much needed.  We spent the morning checking out MLS listings our realtor had sent us - only 260 to go through!  Our plan was to head to Rib Fest around lunchtime but my friend Shannon texted me and said they were playing beach volleyball that afternoon so our plans shifted a bit.  I can never turn down a game of beach volleyball!

We got to the beach about 1pm and spent a fun few hours playing volleyball and working up our appetite for Rib Fest that night.  It was a beautiful day - only about 75 degrees but there was some humidity making it feel warmer than it actually was.  We managed to work up a little sweat and Nick even went swimming in the 65 degree water!

After leaving the beach, we headed home to shower and get ready for Rib Fest.  We were trying to wait to leave our apartment until after the Belmont Stakes but they sure drag those race starts out!  Luckily, we were able to listen to the race in the car on our way to pick up our friends.  I'm not a huge fan of horse racing or anything but I do enjoy it and was disappointed that California Chrome couldn't pull off the Triple Crown!

Rib Fest was up near Lincoln Square in a part of the city that I had never been to before and it's always fun to check out new areas.  We had a blast.  I love my food but I definitely wouldn't consider myself a "foodie" - give me anything fried, drenched in bbq sauce or cheese and I'm happy.  Which is exactly what Rib Fest was so you can only imagine the heaven I was in!

We spent a good three hours stuffing our faces.  Each rib house offered a sample size which was 3 pieces of ribs, the perfect amount to allow us to try a bunch of different places without getting overly full.  We had ribs from The Piggery, BBQ Kings and Uncle Bub's BBQ.  I'm a huge fan of the "saucy" ribs over the the smoked version and The Piggery was by far our favorite!  We already have plans to hit up their actual restaurant soon.

Uncle Bubs BBQ ribs

Some other goodies we got our hands on included beers (of course), mac and cheese topped with Cheez-Its, french fries and - wait for it - a pulled pork sandwich on a pretzel bun topped with (more) mac and cheese.  We finished the night off with a bakers dozen of fried doughnuts - my mouth is watering again just thinking about them!

Frying up those donuts

I wish I would have taken more pictures but you can only imagine how sticky everything was!  It was a perfect night out with friends and we spent just as much money as we would have at a normal dinner but this was way more fun.  Our goal is to spend each weekend hitting up the beach and an outdoor festival of some sort - that would make for the most amazing summer ever!

We had to call it an early night since I had to work the next morning so we headed home about 10pm.  Probably for the best though because I was SO full!  Sunday brought a long but decent day of working.. the best part of the day was heading home at 8pm ;)  Hope your weekends were filled with lots of fun and food, too!

  18. I was at Ribfest, too! I went to see the Cubs on Friday, and we hit it up afterwards. It was a mess of a crowd..so we left early after quite a few spilled beers on me from some of the locals. I love Chicago street fests, but for some reason, you couldn't even move on Friday night. Glad you had fun!
