5 Shows To (Binge) Watch On Netflix

There is nothing on TV in the summer, it's a well known fact.  Nick and I had to resort to watching Wipeout on Sunday night which was surprisingly funny but not usually the type of show we go for.  I'm well aware this is a first world problem but still, there is only so much HGTV a person can watch over 3 months.

All this to say that there is a solution to the summertime TV problem.  And it's Netflix.  Last fall, we stole my dad's Netflix password and it was the best thing we ever did for ourselves.  We've been binge watching TV series like it's our job over the last few months and life has been good.  Here are our top 5 favorite shows ranked in order... I promise you will become addicted love them.

FIVE | House of Cards/Orange Is The New Black
I know, I know a tie is so lame.  Both are Netflix original series meaning you can only watch them via Netflix.  If you like Scandal, you'll like HOC.  It's a bit more politically hard-core but still has enough character soap opera drama to keep you interested.  Kevin Spacey is amazing as Frank Underwood and as bad as he is, you can't stop watching.

Orange Is The New Black is another train wreck of a show - why do the characters make such PLD's?  You really feel for all of them as they attempt to survive day by day in a women's prison.  I didn't think I was going to like this but after a couple of episodes, I was hooked.

FOUR | Mad Men
This is a show worth watching just for Jon Hamm alone.  Set in the 1960's, this show will take you back in time to what we might think was a simpler world... but not so much for these characters.  Mad Men is starting it's final season next year so this is the best time to get caught up.

THREE | Parenthood
Another show about to start its final season.  You don't need to be a parent to enjoy this one, it's more of a family dramedy.  I love how Parenthood portrays real life and the characters face real issues like cancer, divorce, sexuality, Asperberger's and adoption. It's one of the most heartwarming shows ever and I can't get through an episode without crying - seriously, you try!

TWO | Friday Night Lights
If Nick and I ever move to Texas, it will be because of this show.  Based on a true story, FNL is about a high school football team, mostly revolving around the coach and his family.  The entire cast is amazing (Tim Riggins) and by the end of the series, you will have left a part of your heart in the fake town of Dillon, TX.  Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

ONE | Breaking Bad
Best show of all time - not just on Netflix but period, hands down.  A high school chemistry teacher finds out he has cancer and in a desperate attempt to make enough money for his family to survive on once he's gone, decides to start cooking crystal meth.  I'm not going to say much more because you just need to watch this one for yourself!

We're in between shows right now and are considering starting The Wire or Dexter next.  Any thoughts on these or other recommendations?

  1. I have never watched Parenthood but I am obsessed with the other 5 and couldn't agree more with your assessment of each! I tried to watch The Wire once but I couldn't get into it. Dexter WAS my favorite show until Breaking Bad. The first 4 seasons are good and the 4th season is fantastic, but after that it started to go downhill.

  2. You nailed it with this list! I love all of these shows (except House of Cards, haven't watched it yet.) I can't believe Parenthood is ending and I still miss FNL. Breaking Bad is the best show ever. Good picks!!!

  3. I started watching Breaking Bad but I guess I didn't give it a try since I saw like two or three episodes and did not like it. Once hubs leaves for school I'll start again. Is it that good?

And Parenthood is one of my new jams...I'm only on season 2. I've heard mad men is amazing so that's my next show to start.

  8. We just binge watched Breaking Bad, and have now started Game of Thrones. Binge watching is the best and I'm not sure I can go back to waiting a week between episodes! Or waiting between seasons, eek! I loved Dexter, but my husband wasn't a fan.

  9. I need to binge watch a few of these! I never watched Breaking Bad because I didn't want to get addicted! I need to watch Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad though!

  11. Ohhh Breaking Bad! So good. We are watching House of Cards too, but I just can't get into it. We're already finished with both seasons of OITNB (*insert sad face*).

Good to know Mad Men impresses someone else! We've been wanting to watch it, but haven't, yet. I think I know what our next show will be!

  12. These are all great recommendations! We of course gave up our Netflix subscription for the summer since we rarely watch TV during these months (especially now with the pup!), so I am hoping to watch House of Cards and Orange is the New Black when we start it up again. Mad Men is one of my favorite shows, so I hope you're enjoying it!

  13. my husband would absolutely vote for The Wire, he reckons its the best TV show ever made, and 'critics agree' or so he is always telling me. He tells me I wouldn't like it, and from bits I have seen, I agree lol. I like girlier shows for sure. We binge watched Mad Men last winter but didn't make it all the way through before burning out. I think I need to re-watch it.

  14. I know a ton of people loved Dexter!! I'm thinking my next series will be House of Cards but I have got to finish watching OISTNB!!! I've dragged out the 2nd season!! Love this list though because there is no doubt that summer TV sucks!!

  15. Parenthood is starting its last season??? NO!!! I love that show. We are also big fans of Mad Men. We've got the new season on the DVR and hopefully will catch up on it soon!

  16. Okay -- I'm going to have to start watching Friday Night Lights for sure! I watched a couple but I want to watch all of it! xo!

  17. Well I hope you know you just stole my heart with FNL reference! I'm currently on season 2 and seriously cannot get enough! I'm even pinning stuff from it (hahaha 7 years late that's all) loooove it! xoxo

  18. I couldn't handle Breaking Bad! The acting was great and it was definitely well done but it was sooo depressing I couldn't make it through season 2! My husband is just starting the final season, and I've been watching here and there, but I already know how it ends so I kind of lost interest. Everyone thinks I'm crazy because anyone who has seen it agrees it's one of their favorite shows ever! I started watching Dexter in the 3rd or 4th season and liked it, but it definitely got a little ridiculous in the final seasons, but I think you would like it!

  21. I am watching Friday Night Lights right now and am loving it! Two words: Tim Riggins. Um, YUM! Love, love, love!

  22. We're both on TV mode in our posts today :)
I am trying to get my hubs to watch Breaking Bad - he doesn't know what he's missing!!!!!
I am watching HOC & it is VERY hardcore political so I have a hard time staying with it completely but I do love the drama of it.

  23. I was hooked on FNL since the very beginning! When I get a free weekend I tend to blow the dust off the DVDs and binge watch them til it drives Matt crazy! I enjoy Parenthood whenever I can catch it, but now would be a good time to really watch it because during the fall it's on the same time as some of our old favorites.

  24. I love the first two and will have to take a peek at the others (thanks for the recommendations!!!) xo

  25. Um excuse me where is Scandal?! I've got 4 episodes left and then I can go back to OITNB.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I totally agree on HOC - but haven't ever watched Friday night lights - that'll be the next one!

    ReplyDelete
  27. YES HOC and OITNB but since we finished them both we're in a rut. Still need to finish Mad Men. We both loved Dexter and watched it from the very beginning - highly recommend! I just couldn't get into The Wire but Trey was obsessed (made for a great option for him when it was "me" time lol).

  28. I keep seeing OITNB all over the place and I have yet to divulge into starting it. But I'm so intrigued!

  29. Gosh, I REALLY need to add House of Cards to the list already! I've heard sooo many great things about that show and I definitely something to hold me over until the new season of Scandal starts! Can it be September already??

I tried to get into Friday Night Lights after hearing so many rave reviews about it, but I just couldn't get into it. I don't know why, but I just couldn't.

  30. I need to check out Army Wives and Friday Night Lights... I am working from home until August 1st, and I have started watching TV while working - that's a lot of Food Network, haha! So these will be great to rotate into my "routine"

  31. I love Parenthood and I'm so sad it's almost over! FNL is one of my all-time faves, too. I own the box set and I've re-watched it several times! Even though it's not on Netflix, Gilmore Girls is one of my very favorite shows too- so heartwarming and funny. :)

    xo Always, Abby

  32. I have watched exactly zero of any of these shows and keep wondering what I should start with, so thank you thank you for this list.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've got to get in there with Mad Men!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. If you can get him to watch Gossip Girl then do it!!!! I had my fiance hooked after two episodes!

    ReplyDelete
  35. The only show on here I've watched is FNL and I just was devastated when the show ended! HA! So true that you leave a piece of your heart in Dillon. I've been wanting to watch Breaking Bad and OITNB (although that seems so not my show). Now I'm even more intrigued!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Friday Night Lights...yes!!! Loved it! I need to check out the others!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I watch all of those shows!! Great picks. I'm a fan. I didn't know this was the last season of Parenthood. :(

  38. The only two that I have watched out of your list is Orange is the New Black and Breaking Bad. I love Orange! LUB LUB it and have seen both seasons already. Breaking Bad however was something I ended up watching with my mom. We really didn't finish it.
