Battle of the Hair Oils

Hair oils smooth the hair, helping to tame frizz and flyaways, provide shine and repair split ends.  Well... that's what they're supposed to do at least.  I've been riding the struggle bus the last couple of years trying to find the *perfect* hair oil for my locks... but I've finally done it!  I've tried a few of the more popular brands and am here to share my honest thoughts on each to hopefully speed up the process/save you some money on your hair oil search :)

In order of my least to most favorite....

4) Moroccan Oil Treatment
My least favorite.  I know!  Crazy because so many people swear by the Moroccan Oil brand.  Unfortunately, the stuff did n-o-t-h-i-n-g for my hair.  It did do one thing for my skin, though: give me breakouts.  That's right, anytime I let a wet piece of hair coated with the oil come into contact with my face... let's just say break out city commenced.  It was not fun.  I found the oil itself to be sticky and heavy and noticed no benefit to my hair at all.

3) Josie Maran Argan Oil Hair Serum
I had high hopes for this because I'm a big fan of the Josie Maran face oil.  However, it did nothing for my hair.  But it didn't cause breakouts so there's that.

2) Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil
You can't go wrong with Bumble and Bumble products!  I really liked this oil and saw a noticeable difference in my hair -- namely it was much softer and the stubborn frizz was reduced quite a bit.  I would definitely recommend this oil and would still be using it myself if my hairdresser hadn't introduced me to my holy grail product...

1) Kerastase Elixir Ultime
Love love love.  I cannot say enough good things about this Kerastase product!  It's super lightweight, frizz is at an all time low, flyaways are non existent and my hair is SO shiny.  I've always struggled with the part/crown of my hair looking dull but this oil actually solves that problem.  It is pricey but one drop per day will do so it'll last for quite a while.  Liquid gold in a bottle sums it up.

Obviously, everyone's hair is different and has different needs so what works for me won't necessarily be best for you! Although, I'd put money on the fact that everyone would love the Kerastase oil :)  What's your favorite and are there any out there that I should try?

  1. Gary came home yesterday to tell me the news about Robin Williams and I seriously can't even believe it!! What a loss to the world - such a talent!!

I love Moroccan oil and use Garnier's less expensive option LOL and think it much better ($7.99), but for some reason I can't really get into Argan oil for my hair...it sort of leaves it greasy, but maybe I should try a different application method since I have some of it left!! I'm going to try the Elixir one next :)

  2. So so sad about Robin williams :( the only one I've had luck with is Moroccan oil light since I have fine hair it seems to be the only one that doesn't leave me greasy. I need to look into that keratase though

  4. I'm still in shock over Robin Williams and so deeply saddened that he was fighting so many demons :(

I'm surprised to hear you didn't like the Moroccan Oil brand, but good to know because I was about to try it! Bumble and Bumble always has amazing products!

  6. I still can't believe he is gone... just crazy and so, so sad. I also am NOT a fan of Moroccan Oil. It just never lived up to the hype for me, and neither did Josie Maran. I have to try Kerastase!!

  7. I was (and still am) heartbroken about the news of Robin Williams. I may even have shed a tear or two last night ... yeah, don't judge! It just hit me funny for some reason. So tragic.

Anyways! I've never tried any hair oils, but I'll have to give one of these a try. My hairdresser told me a long time ago not to use the Moroccan Oil because it would turn my hair a weird color ...

  8. Such a sad event to a life that made so many people happy!

I love your reviews. I *almost* bought the Moroccan Oil the other day because of the hype but am so glad I read this post. No one has time for breakouts!

  9. yeah!!! I am sooo excited to see the B&B on your list! It is my absolute fav as well but now I think I have to try the Kerastase. I really have no words about Robin Williams.....just such a shock!

  10. I am with you lady, it's weird how much his death affected me. But I agree, he was such a part of my life growning.

I've heard great things about Kerastase.

  11. So sad about Robin Williams. I always wonder how these highly successful people still have depression. But I know it's a disease and beyond their control. I recently started using Aquage for my hair and I love it. I'm sure you realized real quick how nasty humid it is here in Charleston so I have to use a major frizz reducer. Moroccan oil doesn't cut it. I'll have to try Kerastase too!

  12. I feel like I'd only want to use hair oil during the winter. My hair is so thick though I'm thinking that it might make it greasy no? Very sad about Robin Williams too. I loved the Birdcage and Mrs. Doubtfire. It's another example of how incredibly difficult addiction and depression can be, and how its OK to go and talk to someone. I hope that you're having a good day! :-)

  13. I was devastated yesterday when I heard about Robin. So sad.

I've only used the Moroccan Oil but I'm not the biggest fan of it to be honest. My hair is super thin and fine so I feel like it weighs it down and can make it look greasy. I want to try the B&B one though!

  15. I am so very sad about Robin Williams. I have no words that haven't already been said, he was truly one of the greats. Normally celebrity deaths don't bother me, but I feel like he was such a big part of my childhood. So sad.

I have never tried any hair oils, i am a bit scared to try!

  16. What! I haven't heard the news yet about Robin Williams! I guess I should turn the TV on, before I go to blogging world! This is so sad! Mrs. Doubtfire and Jumanji were my faves tooo!!!

  20. It's the worst when something for your hair makes your skin break out! The JM argan oil is the only one I've used and I like it, but I think I actually like her regular argan oil (that you can use for your skin too) better for my hair than the argan hair oil.

So sad to hear about Robin Williams- I still love to watch Jumanji and it still kind of scares me, haha :)

  21. I'm surprised the Moroccan oil didn't work for you, my hair loves it but my bank account does not! haha. You're right though, it varies by person. Will have to try out the Kerastase!

  22. RIP RW!!! I love keratin anything and you certainly have beautiful hair so I need to try out numero uno although I love bumblebee anything!!

  23. So sad about Robin Williams..Mrs. Doubtfire and Aladin where two of my childhood favorites as well (jumanji scared me, I don't think i've ever watched it completely). And don't get me started on Kerastase! I need to save pennies!!

  24. (Weeping tears of joy) - It's like you knew just what a dilemma my hair was in! Going to buy a bottle of Kerastase stat!

  25. I told Dustin the same thing, I've never felt so saddened from a celebrity death, it really broke my heart. Just so sad! I have the Moroccan Oil, my aunt bought it for me. I don't love it but I don't hate it. Once it's out, I'm getting the Kerastase for sure!!

  26. Great tribute to RW! I also watched Mrs. Doubtfire on repeat as a kid! And thank you for posting these hair oils. I need to try one out!

  27. is the Kerastase available in department stores as well or have you only found it online? other oils break me out too, so you are not alone!

  30. First of all, so sad about Robin Williams. Such a talented man.
Second, I think it is so interesting that you didn't love the Moroccan oil. I have never tried any oils, but I know people swear the Moroccan oil is like the best thing ever! May need to try the Keratase sometime!

  32. Such an amazing man! The movie Hook has so many great memories for me and I cry every time I watch it. Now I'm sure I'll cry even harder!

I haven't tried hair oils but I think I need to start. I'm always complaining about the flyaways I have...maybe that would solve some of my problem.

  33. So many great childhood movie memories with Robin Williams...

I haven't tried many hair oils, but I am going to have to now! I've been struggling with dry and staticky hair lately and need something! Thanks for the recs lady!

  34. Aw RIP Robin. Jumanji will always be a favorite. I'm so over Moroccan Oil (and its price!). Must try the Keratese, although now that I actually bought the correct It's a 10 (the serum not the moisturizer) I'm a pretty happy girl these days in the hair department. Glad you found something you're loving!

  35. I rarely use oils in my hair, unless it's the WEN treatment oils on my scalp at night. I might have to check out your "holy grail" and see how my hair reacts.

    xo Always, Abby

  36. The jury is still out for me on these types of oils. I'm SO skeptical about using them, since my hair is soo oily naturally. BUT, I trust you, so I might have to try one out!
