Five on Friday 8/1

It's August.  How did this happen?  I have no idea but I'm just going to focus on the fact that it's Friday, too.  This week has been dragging for me even though it was a short one because I've been patiently waiting for Saturday -- our home inspection day!  Fingers crossed everything goes well!  As of right now, we're shooting to move over Labor Day weekend... so our time in Chicago is pretty limited now.  Time to start checking off the rest of our bucket list and get started on packing (gross).  But before all that... here's five highlights from this past week!

+ Anniversary Traditions
We celebrated our first anniversary on Sunday and one thing I was looking forward to was getting into our wedding cake!  I didn't get to eat any at our reception besides the one bite Nick fed me when we cut the cake so I was really hoping it would still taste the same.  Well.. it didn't taste exactly the same but it was still decent!  The frosting tasted like straight up cardboard but the actual cake was pretty good!

+ Scandal
I'm all caught up.... and when does season 4 start?!?  You guys were right, I'm so glad I ended up hanging on because I'm now officially hooked.  And I'm also #teamjake

+ Apple Pie English Muffins
I promise I'm not trying to rush fall but I couldn't pass these babies up at the grocery store.  Toasted with a bit of butter... SO delicious!!  If you find them, scoop 'em up!

+ Organizing/Decluttering
My new thing over the last couple weeks has been to just throw anything and everything that I'm not using away.  We are going to be doing a lot of packing and moving in the next few weeks and if I don't use it now, why put in the effort to move it?  I found this on Pinterest and have been following it for a few days now -- it's a great starting base!

+ New Orleans
What's the best way to get over the post vacation blues??  To plan another one of course!  Nick and I are heading to New Orleans for 4 days in September -- neither of us have been before so any recommendations are welcomed/needed!  We already have our hotel booked and we will be staying right in the French Quarter.  Cannot wait.

That's all I've got for today -- enjoy your weekend!!

  1. Glad your cake wasn't too bad!! I'm not a big fan of frosting any way so if the cake was still decent that's all that matters! :) So jealous of your upcoming trip to New Orleans. I need to plan more vacations! Happy Friday!

  7. Hooray for another trip in September! You probably will want to get away for a few days after the moving madness. :) We ate the top of our wedding cake back in December when we got our wedding pictures (we decided to start a new tradition; we plan to get a small cake every anniversary and look at our photos), and it did NOT taste good. So I can't imagine what it would've tasted like after a whole year! And yes for #teamjake! Have a great weekend, girl. :)

  9. Apple pie english muffins?! Yum! I may have to try to tackle that 31 days of decluttering... The "nesting" stage is here already! So jealous you are going to New Orleans! I've never been, but have heard it's so much fun. Happy Friday!

  10. New Orleans will be so much fun!! I've never been, which is weird because I don't live very far away, but all of my friends have.

I'm glad your wedding cake was good! Ours was wrapped in foil, but not in plastic wrap or anything. Then about a month after our honeymoon, we remembered that we still needed to wrap it. Ooops. We took it out and wrapped it in tons of plastic wrap, and then foil. Hopefully it's not too freezer burnt. :-/ I guess we'll find out in 9 months. :p

  11. Hope the home inspection goes smoothly! Exciting! We did not save our cake top to have this year. Instead we ate it on our 1 month anniversary. haha. New Orleans sounds like fun! My hubs wants to go there too.

    Happy weekend!!

  15. I've been to New Orleans a few times. It's a really fun city. Glad that your cake still tasted OK! Our reception venue actually made the top of our cake for free on our first anniversary. :-) Good luck with your home inspection and I hope that you have a great weekend!

  23. i've never been to Nola either and looking forward to this recap. totally laughed that you said the wedding cake tasted like cardboard!

    ReplyDelete
  24. WHAT?!?!?! I didn't know those English muffins existed. On the hunt at the grocery today for them!
Fondant on cake sometimes can taste funny when you get it in bulk & that bow looks like bulk. Just give me good ole plain buttercream icing... in abundance!

  25. gah. that declutter list makes me anxious...but TOTALLY something i need to embrace and do. save me. :) thanks for linking up gal!

  26. So glad your cake was still edible...our wedding cake was sooooo good, and I'm hoping/praying that it is at least half as good when we eat it on our anniversary (in November). No freezer burn! Thinking of you and crossing my fingers that the home inspection goes well!

  27. I need a declutter month in my life! I feel like our house is constantly overflowing with things we don't use

  28. Oh my goodness I LOVE New Orleans! I've been dying to go back. I loved the French Market (in the FQ by the river) and I think I got a beignet (or 2) every morning; my favorites were from Cafe Beignet but Cafe Du Monde was good too, just crowded. Also, make sure you have cash to give the street musicians. They look a little rough but it was seriously some of the best music I've ever heard. Enjoy the city, so much culture!

  29. Wow look at that cake!! I hope we get to save some after our wedding :) Fingers crossed that your home inspection goes well!! :) Happy Friday!

  30. APPLE PIE ENGLISH MUFFINS?!?! Shutup!! I'll need to buy a pack of those...

And I told you that Scandal just got better and better with every season! The 4th season starts this fall in September, I cannot wait!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Seriously. I cannot believe that it's August already. We are going to blink, and then fall will be here!!! And those English muffins look amazing!

Scandal starts Sept 24 or 25 (whatever that Thursday night is) and I can't wait! You guys will hopefully be all settled into your new house by then, and can really enjoy starting the new season with Olivia Pope - I'm totally Team Jake too:) Keeping my fingers crossed that your inspection goes well!

  32. Those english muffins excite me! I am totally trying to rush into fall! I LOVE fall!! Your organizing list makes this OCD mama so excited! I love that--much more manageable than trying to tackle so many things at once!! Prayers for a great inspection!! How exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Must find those english muffins asap! NOLA will be amazing. Haven't been either, so can't wait for the full review in a few months. Enjoy your weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  34. AHh!! I am SO jealous of your NOLA trip - I have never been and have always wanted to go!!

  35. Your cake looks so pretty still! We only did a small cake to cut so we didn't have one to freeze, but our bakery is supposed to give us cupcakes each year on our anniversary but we forgot about it! I'm glad the inside of your cake still tasted good-- such a fun tradition! We go through sooo many english muffins in our house! Apple pie sounds delicious! New Orleans is such a fun trip destination! I went to do Katrina relief so we only did "touristy" things one of the days, but I would love to go back!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Our cake tasted like cardboard too! Jordan ate a ton of it, but I don't know what he was thinking. haha! Happy (belated) anniversary! August is here, and this summer is FLYING.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Scandal is THE BEST!! Cannot wait for season 4 (!!!). You've got to do cafe du monde in NOLA for cafe au lait and beignets, and some other favorites are the carousel bar at Hotel Monteleone, Cafe Degas, and brunch at Court of Two Sisters :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. TEAM JAKE. but seriously when does it come back?! Oh it has been 5 years since I went to NOLA and it was a drunken haze anyway, so I have no recommendations - so excited for you

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh wow first of all, I MUST try those English Muffins! YUM!

Second, New Orleans is amazing! Aside from eating as many beignets as possible, you should definitely check out Preservation Hall Jazz Band! It's such a cool experience and the music is unbelievable! Also, the music along Frenchman Street is really amazing and I heard that area is where all of the locals go!

  40. i went to school in new orleans, so i'd happy happy to answer any vacationing questions you might come up with <3

  41. I'm so excited for Labor Day to get here and you to be in Kalamazoo! Ok that de-clutter chart looks awesome and I need to follow it. I've been in such a throw away mood lately that I'm ready to just get rid of everything. Jealous yall are going to New Orleans! I love it there. You HAVE to make reservations at this place called Irene's. We accidentally found this place one night and it's one of the best meals I've ever had!

  42. Happy belated Anniversary!! I just finished season 3 of scandal, too. I kind of don't know what to do with my life now haha. I won't watch season 4 live, though. I can't handle week long breaks between episodes. I'll just wait until it's out on netflix (yeah, I know....that's a long time...ugh).

    ReplyDelete
  43. Team Jake all the way! Love the declutter list...I've been in the throwing away mood too!

    ReplyDelete
  44. How fun that you're going to New Orleans! I went but it was a long time ago so I don't remember much. Just Cafe DuMonde :) And a homeless guy shooting another homeless guy but I think you'll be okay :-p That was a rare thing! And I just realized that assuming our contract goes through as planned, we'll be moving the same weekend that you are!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love the declutter list! I currently am suffering from a clutter overload in my house and having a two year old makes it even harder to keep up with everything but I'll have to pin that right away! Thanks for posting it!
