Two Years Later: Engagement Story

Two years ago today, Nick and I got engaged!  I've never shared the story on the blog before and figured today was the perfect day to do so.  Although it's not too much of a story... Nick is a lot of wonderful things but a planner is not one of them ;)

A little background info on the end of summer/early fall of 2012... I was working like a crazy person.  We were short staffed at the country club but didn't want to hire anyone else since things really slow down in October so we were just pushing through August and September.  I was working over 50 hours a week, seven days a week.  I literally had one day off in a span of twenty something days.

On top of that, I was taking a few classes at a college near my work.  (This is back when I was seriously considering getting a masters degree and was taking a few pre-req classes to start the program.)  So I was going to work, then to class, then back to work and then coming home and doing homework.  I was overwhelmed, stressed and just had a l-o-t going on.

The night of Saturday, September 8th, I was determined to have a girls night.  I hadn't seen my friends in quite a while and Nick was busy with hockey that night so I had them all over at my place after I got home from working a 12 hour shift.  I also had the next morning off of work so I just wanted to blow off a little steam through lots of laughing and a few too many drinks!  It was a great night and kind of crazy because we actually talked about when some of us would start to get engaged.  We all thought it was a ways off and I even specifically said I didn't think Nick and I would get engaged for at least another year.  Ha!

Sunday morning rolled around and I was nursing quite the hangover.  The beginning of September was Nick and I's "dating anniversary" so we were planning on doing brunch to celebrate before I had to go to work that afternoon.  I wasn't feeling the greatest and was all ready to go and literally waiting by the door for him when he calls out to me from the bedroom "come in here."  I was like "no, let's go, I have to work soon, if we don't go now I won't have time for breakfast"... blah blah.  We argue across the apartment for a couple of minutes before he comes out to me standing oh so impatiently by the front door.

And next thing I know, he's grabbing my hand and telling me how much he loves me and then he's GETTING DOWN ON ONE KNEE.  I was sooo in shock and pretty much blacked out during this because I have no idea what he said (which makes me so sad)!  He's opening the ring box to the most beautiful princess cut diamond and I can barely squeak out a "yes!"

I'm that person that doesn't show a ton of emotion when I'm overwhelmed and I just kept saying "I can't believe it.  I can't believe it" over and over.  Poor Nick, I think he thought I wasn't excited but I was just so in shock!  I swear it took me a good week to finally process everything that was happening.  I also had to paint my nails because they were bare and I couldn't go out and show off my new ring like that!

After a quick at home manicure, we headed downtown to grab breakfast.  I was still pretty hungover and now clearly in shock so there was no way I was going to be eating.  We grabbed bagels and walked around downtown and it was just the strangest feeling!  It was literally the last thing in the world I was expecting that day!  Since I had to go to work that afternoon (terrible timing!), we headed back home to call our families and let them in on the happy news.

Around noon, I went off to work where everyone was super excited and wanted to see the bling bling -- thank goodness I did my nails!  I got absolutely nothing done that day.  I spent the entire day texting with my friends and of course still saying "I can't believe it!"  After what felt like the longest day of work ever, I headed home where two of my friends surprised us with a bottle of champagne and bridal magazines.  The planning officially began from there!

It's funny because the very next morning, Monday, Nick left for a work trip for a few days and then as soon as he got home, I was off to Arizona for a weekend with friends.  Our first week as an engaged couple wasn't even spent together! We laugh about it now because it was a perfect storm of things that didn't make getting engaged that day the right timing but Nick said he just couldn't wait anymore.  And I love that.  I love that he loves me so much that he couldn't even wait a month for life to slow down.  He had the ring and he was so excited that he just couldn't wait a day longer.  It was the perfect story and the perfect timing for us... and I wouldn't change a single thing!

  3. Awww I love this story & your rings are sooo gorgeous! It's actually crazily similar to our engagement story too as far as the timing, and him not being able to wait once he had the ring!

  4. I love that the engagement happened right at home, right in the middle of everyday life. It seems like such an honest, sweet moment, minus the hangover! Sometimes life doesn't really ever slow down, so it was so so sweet he asked because he couldn't imagine waiting any longer! Love your story!

& yep - its a must to have manicured hands.
My photo assistant - I knew when her boyfriend was going to propose so we had her best friend make a girls mani/pedi day so we knew her hands were good for the ring when she got it :) haha

  16. I really like the idea of him picking a not-so-perfect day because he couldn't wait anymore. :) Some couples (not you two) forget that they must be together during the perfect, smooth times AND the rough times; I think a lot of people make the mistake of waiting for perfection.

  29. Girl I love this!! One: because it's just the cutest, Two: because my Nick felt the exact same way & "couldn't wait" so ours was a great story but not overly romantic, Three: the ring is gorgeous! and Four: because it's a story about another Nick & Katie =)
