Weekending: Water Problems

Where did this weekend go?!  I could of sworn it was Friday morning... and just like that, it's Monday.  This weekend went by in a flash and I have a feeling they're going to be like this from here on out!  We did a lot of work on the house but also managed to have some fun, too.

Friday evening, one of my best friends came down from Grand Rapids to see the house and grab dinner.  She brought us the sweetest housewarming gift, an orchid (that I'm determined to keep alive) and a bottle of wine!

It was storming pretty bad Friday night and when we got to the restaurant, the power actually went out.  Luckily the generator kicked on right away and we were able to stay and eat.  It was a crazy storm -- so many people around us had damage.. trees and power lines down everywhere.  But back to dinner, I actually left my phone at home on accident which was a weird feeling, I felt like I was missing my right arm.  On the other hand (haha), it was also really nice to just be fully focused on enjoying dinner, no distractions.  Although I wish I could have gotten a picture of my watermelon mint julep because it was perfection.

Saturday morning brought the farmers market which I was SO looking forward to!  It didn't disappoint and we picked up fresh green beans, peaches, apple pie and flowers.  The prices were awesome and everyone was so friendly... I definitely see this becoming our Saturday morning tradition.  On the way home, we stopped for donuts and coffee (also a tradition that needs to continue) and hit up some garage sales in our neighborhood.

Later that day, we headed up to Grand Rapids to hit up Costco and Home Goods.  I fell in love with an HGTV Home couch but unfortunately we didn't have any way to get it home.  We need a bigger car ASAP.   At Costco, we made our first big purchase for the new house -- a TV for the entertainment/off the kitchen room!  I can't wait to get it mounted above the fireplace but we're going to wait until after we paint.

Speaking of paint... we tried out a couple of samples in our living room.  The one on the left is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter and on the right is Glidden's Polished Limestone.  I love both of the colors in general but not sure if they're clashing with the carpet?  I'm so bad at this stuff... choosing paint colors is giving me anxiety!  If any of you have an eye for this (I know the colors don't look the same in the picture), just tell me what to do, ha!

The rest of the night was consumed with all the fried food a la Buffalo Wild Wings and college football.  It was a bad night for Michigan sports teams but still, Go Blue!

Ahhh, Sunday.  We had big plans for this day: try out a new church (which was having their annual fall kick off picnic after), do our grocery shopping, do some painting, etc. etc.  Well, yeah pretty much none of that happened.  We had major water problems.

Our house actually has well water and during the inspection, bacteria was found in the water.  We had to have a professional come out on Friday night and chlorinate the water to kill the bacteria... this meant we couldn't use our water for 24 hours.  Then we were supposed to run our hoses for 8 hours and then run all of our faucets/sinks/showers in the house for 20 minutes to completely flush the pipes out.

That's not quite how things went.  All went well with running the hoses but when it came to run the water in the house, the water was literally red with sediment in it.  I wish I was joking.  And I wish I had gotten a picture of the red water but Nick would have killed me.  It was FULL of iron and dirt and rocks (see above, gross) and clogged up all of the strains on the sinks.  Oh, and clogged our toilets.  So we had to change filters, buy new strains, clean everything, fix the toilets, run the water for hoooouuurrrssss.  It was so annoying and consumed our entire Sunday.  No church, no grocery shopping, no painting.  The joys of home ownership, right?

Didn't even have a chance to put on real clothes

We have the city coming out to work on the water/plumbing tonight and hopefully it should all be fixed.  Fingers crossed because I really don't want to spend my evening at Home Depot again... which also seems to be becoming a new tradition.  How was your weekend?

  1. Oh gosh. I remember being in Home Depot for one reason or another almost every weekend for the first couple of months after we moved into our first house. It's always something! I got so sick of seeing our bank account drained at Home Depot - as I can think of a lot of other fun places that I would MUCH rather spend money, lol! Hoping all of your water issues get resolved soon and are not a problem for you guys any more! And, from what I can see in the picture, I am loving the paint on the right - I think it sets off the carpet a little better than the color on the left! :)

  2. Oh geez that totally stinks about the water. I'm sorry. :-( I'm sure that it will get fixed though! That farmers market sounds like fun and I'm glad that you had a nice time with your friend. I hope that you are having a great day so far too! :-)

  3. I'm so jealous of your farmers market outfit - jeans and a sweater?! Yes please! Picking paint colors is so hard! It's unbelievable how different shades that look exactly the same in the store look totally different when you get them on the wall. Of those two, I think the one on the right looks better with the carpet.

  4. Sorry to hear about the water - I'm sure once all these little problems get sorted out you guys will be on a permanent cloud 9 being homeowners!! Congrats on the new tv purchase - can't wait to see what it looks like mounted to the wall! Also, if my weekend workout wear was as cute as yours, I'd wear it all during the day too! xo

  5. It also went too fast. I am sorry about the water!!

  6. Good luck with the plumbing! That's a bummer, but I'm sure you'll get it fixed. I think everyone runs into small issues when they first move in.
Your weekend sounds amazing! Glad you're (mostly) enjoying your new home! I think either paint would really work. The one on the right is the most different than the carpet, but I don't think that either color clashes.

  7. Ugh, sorry to hear about the water issues. Best wishes for a quick fix.

Love the flowers, farmers markets are the best!

  8. oh that sucks about the water, hopefully its all sorted soon. i hate home depot and lowes now, i used to love going, but when we were redoing the floors we were there almost every day, sometimes twice a day lol. that sucks you couldnt get the couch home, but yay for new tv! costco is where its at for the tvs :) did you pick anything up at the garage sales?

  9. Sorry to hear about the water!! Yikes. At least you squeezed in home goods & the farmers market. Two of my favorite weekend things! :)

  10. Oh man, my parents have well water but never had an issue like that!! Yay for a new TV! We got ours from Costco too, I don't think I've ever seen my husband so excited for a purchase. haha. I'm not good with paint either... I have about 25 different shades of grey options for our nursery. Personally I love the Revere Pewter but it does clash a little with the carpet color.

  11. Oh no that stinks about the water!! Farmer's Markets are always fun to go to on Saturdays!

  12. I love the Revere Pewter. I don't think it clashes at all. My tip for keeping orchids alive is 3 ice cubes every 10 days or so. They will last you 3+ months!! Sorry about your water and hope it gets fixed soon!!

  13. Water issues are so annoying, but hopefully this did the trick and you guys won't have to worry about any issues in the future! I think both paint colors look great, though for some reason I'm leaning more towards the lighter shade? My parents just repainted their house and my mom went back and forth on paint colors for weeks (even after they had started painting!) so I can understand why it's such a hard decision to make! The farmers market looks great & I'm glad you got some good things from Costco for the house!

  15. Our condo had water issues this past week too, tis the season. They turned it off all day and simply told us it would be off and we would just have to deal. Not a pretty day! Hopefully your issues get fixed :)

  17. What a weekend full of ups and downs. Your new neighborhood sounds darling!! Definitely make the farmer's market and donut stop a weekly occurrence. I love the lighter polished limestone paint color with your woodwork and carpet. Painting is stressful so I hope you find a color you love! Good luck with the water situation - I didn't even know something like that could happen!?!? I guess home ownership kind of forces you to grow up and become Home Depot pros :) One suggestion for your Home Goods situation... we've rented trucks for the day before to purchase large items (recliner, mattresses and couches). It's really affordable to go through uhaul and it's far cheaper than having a store deliver furniture. Might be an option for you in the future or if you can't get this couch out of your head this week :) Hope you have an uneventful week enjoying your new home!!

  18. Even your 'Non-real clothes' are cute :)
Boo... its frustrating to start off with issues in a house, but at least its not something horribly serious. You get thankful for clean water after something like that, don't you?
A new TV is a good first buy... my husband would totally do that too :)
I like the lighter color with that carpet... just me :)

  19. Ah, the joys of home ownership! Our rental home has well water, too, and our landlord did the annual chlorination of it earlier in the summer. It definitely is a pain, especially with what occurred to you guys! Glad to hear that you had a nice weekend and that you're settling in/enjoying your new city!

  20. Homeownership at it's finest, haha! I can relate. Although we built our house, there still seamed to be things that 'went wrong' right when we moved in. I can't wait to see everything fully decorated!!!!!!!!

  21. Ick - we're on city water, but occasionally I'll turn a faucet on and it runs red for a few seconds. SO creepy to say the least when you're not expecting it hah. Glad it's all ok now. Welcome to the homeowner's world for sure ;)

  22. Ah home ownership ha! I hope you guys won't have to pay for a majority of that stuff...eek. At least Saturday turned out exactly how you wanted it to! As for the paint colors...I say the light one. The other just looks like another shade of the one already on the wall. It wouldn't brighten up the space that much. But like you said, the picture can be totally deceiving because of lighting, etc. Hope the water thing works out!

  23. Oh no! I'm sorry -t hat doesn't sound like a good way to spend your Sunday. :( I grew up with well water and it was not great, but once you get it all figured out just get a good water softener and you'll be golden. Hope everything works out tonight!

  24. Annnnnnd it begins right?? Good thing you figured out the problem early though! Are you so excited to be near a Costco again? I am in love with their furniture! When I have space that leather sectional is coming my way!

  25. OMG girl! No water for 24 hours sounds awful! The joys of owning a home... always something going wrong! Personally I like the color on the left... but that's just me! And hello nice big tv! :) I went to Home Goods on Saturday and I can't wait to buy a new house to decorate now! Totally jealous of your Buffalo Wild Wings and watermelon julep! YUM!

  26. Oh goodness- I hope that plumbing situation gets better.. that's no fun at all! Congrats on the new TV though and my paint vote is for the color on the right… I feel like it contrasts a little more with the carpet. Have a great Monday!! xo

  27. oh no fun, owning comes with so many surprises. Our is older so it seems never ending. Fingers crossed for less surprises...or none, unless they are good! Good ones are okay.

  29. Ugh about the water problems!! Sometimes home ownership sucks. I hope everything gets fixed today. It sounds like you had a good weekend before the water problems though.

  31. Ugh, yes the joys of home ownership! Hopefully this will be IT though for you guys :) Your farmers market tradition sounds perfect and YES to the donut/coffee becoming a tradition too!

  32. Orchids are my favorite flower, but they are so temperamental! I just have fake ones now.
I often wish we owned our home instead of renting, but there are perks to both sides...our landlord pays if anything happens with our bathroom/water, but I envy you for being able to paint and do projects as you please!

  33. I'm loving following along in this whole process. Hope you had a great trip to GR. Well water can totally sucks sometimes. I know you have to pay for it, but I much prefer having city water. Just seems to be less of a headache. Your B Dubs looks so yummy!

  36. Yikes! Hate that your weekend was filled with a few unlucky things but soon it will be just how you want it! And really though -- where did the weekend go?! Work last week was crazy and now a quick weekend. We're already on to Tuesday! xo!

  37. HD is my home away from home and I hope it isn't yours! Fingers crossed the water gets cleared up and that is the only major issue you have! My friend told me to cup your hands around the paint when you're looking at it so you see it for its true color instead of compared to everything around it. I hope today was better!! xoxoxo

  38. I am ridiculously jealous of the farmer's market AND the Costco. We had an amazing farmer's marker and costco in Memphis (where my hubs and I are from) but in Jackson we have a terrible farmer's market and NO costco. It is so sad. Also, I just painted my living room Benjamin Moore Navajo white and I am obsessed. I don't know what color you are going for, but I highly recommend it! Hope your water issues are resolved quickly!

  39. Oh no! That stinks about the water. Sounds like such a huge pain :( I hope they got it all sorted out and fixed for you! Aside from that, and the power outage, sounds like a pretty good weekend!

  41. Girl, that is the worst! I remember our first winter in the house, our heat went out and we had an ice storm. They tried fixing our heat for literally 2 weeks and nothing. DG and I were sleeping downstairs on a pallet in front of the fire with Winston! The people in Lowe's and Home Depot also started recognizing us and learned our names. :) xo

I appreciate you finding the time and energy to put this article together.
I once again find myself personally spending a significant
amount of time both reading and commenting. But so what, it was still worth it!
