It's A Painters Life For Me

Paint chips, paint samples, spending all day long painting, cleaning the paint supplies... I really do feel like my life revolves around paint right now.  But all of the time, stress, decision making, money (why so expensive?!) have been worth it because we have almost half of the house painted and I am loving it!  It is crazy how paint can just completely transform a space and it's the best feeling of accomplishment when you finish a room.

How about a mini home tour of what we've done so far?  I'd say the biggest paint improvement has been our foyer/entryway.  Here's a couple before shots (catch up on ALL the before shots here)...

Ahhh, the sponge paint.  When we bought the house, we actually thought this was wallpaper that we were going to have to tear down.  You can imagine our excitement when we realized it was just a paint job gone bad... that would have been a pain in the you know what.

I thought I "had" to do a lighter color in the entryway to open it up but I tried countless samples and none of them were working.  I stumbled across the color Texas Leather by Benjamin Moore but thought it was way too dark for an entry. Nick convinced me to try it and two coats later, we have a beautiful entryway!

Next we need to clean the grout, get a new light fixture and furnish the room of course.  Since the ugly glass blocks aren't going anywhere for a little while, I want to come up with a way to hide them.  I'm thinking of doing light curtains or something, not quite sure yet.  I also want to paint the front door and still have to decide what color I want to paint up the stairs as I haven't touched that yet.  Decisions, decisions.

Straight off the entryway is the "fireplace room" as we've taken to calling it.  If you remember, this room was a buttercup yellow...

Welp, not anymore!  We decided to go with a crisp white in this room to make it feel bigger.  Since the only window it has is the slider door, the room tends to get shadowy in the corners.  The white opens it up and it just feels so fresh.  The color is White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

Tonight we're staining the beams and I am SO excited!  It's going to really pull the room together.   We're still lacking any and all furniture so that's on the agenda this weekend.  Hoping to find a loveseat, a couple of chairs, a cozy rug and little coffee table to center around the fireplace.  It's going to be the best spot in the winter.

Coming around to the family and dining rooms, the changes are a little more subtle.  The walls were a darker beige except for the red accent wall...

Haha I have no idea what was on TV

We decided to stick with beige since it worked best with the carpet but go lighter, via Natural by Valspar.  I'm worried we almost went TOO light... the walls just kind of fade into the background, they have no pop to them.  I'm hoping that will change once we switch out all of the furniture (new couches, tables, lamps, everything) and I can start adding pops of colors through pillows, curtains, etc.  We've got a lot of work to do in here.

The connecting dining room is also Natural by Valspar but we're working on wainscoting in there right now and it is one hot mess so pictures will come later!

The only room left unpainted on the main floor is the kitchen.  My goal is to choose a color this week and get it painted this weekend.  I'm so ready to say goodbye to the orange/red/brown color scheme in there! #whatweretheythinking

Moving upstairs, I've only gotten to the guest bedroom.  The room was a tan color that I really didn't mind, it just didn't quite fit my vision...

Which was gray!  It took FOREVER to pick out that "perfect" gray shade -- the undertones were so tricky.  I ended up going with Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore and I will admit, that even this one tends to look blue at some points during the day.  I could not find a true gray for the life of me but I'm pretty happy with this one!

This furniture was handed down from my family and I'm not really crazy about the black but I'm also not sure if I want to take on furniture painting, too.  This room is my number one project right now as I get ready for our Homecoming guests... I pretty much need everything and the countdown -- 17 days -- is on!

The house is really starting to feel like OURS now and it's all thanks to painting.  As you see, we've barely done anything else!  Now that we're starting to slow the roll on all that, I'm excited to get to the really fun stuff... decorating :)  We're going furniture shopping this Saturday and I can't wait to see the house come together even more!

  2. I love all your neutrals! The entry way looks amazing. The white was a perfect choice for the fireplace room, the fireplace and floors (GORG!) really stand out and look awesome. Love the gray for the bedroom too.

  9. I love all of the colors you picked, that fireplace room is gorgeous!! We did Grey Owl for our nursery and it looks like it has more of a greige tint than blue, but I guess it just depends on the lighting!

  10. Have any of the paints been easier (or harder) to work with?? I like a lot if BM colors but want to make sure I'm not setting up for failure!! ;) love ALL THE CHANGES!!!!

  12. Painting is the biggest makeover you can get for the cheap price point! (You know, compared to new cabinets or hardwood floors, etc) It's a ton of work, but you're doing it and it looks great!

  13. It looks SO good girl! I can't believe how much you have painted! Painting is no joke, it's hard work! And it all came out so well! I love the darker color in the entry! You could halve the strength of it for the stairs going up. I am all about one color in different strengths lately. Gray owl is one of my favorites, but it can look anywhere from green to gray to blue depending on the light. I do love a pop of black (your furniture) against a gray! Can't wait to see the kitchen and what you choose!

  14. You guys have done a great job - especially considering that you haven't lived there all that long! I love the paint choices you made. And know exactly what you mean when it comes to grey paint. We looked for forever for a grey that we liked for our son's nursery. Finally found the perfect one, but like you said, there does seem to have a slightly bluish tint to it in certain lights. Can't wait to see the living room after the beams are stained. I think they will really pop with the white paint you chose!

  16. I remember when sponge paint was in style! Think my mom sponge painted every room in our house! We thought it was so cool at the time! I'm an all beige girl and think you can never go wrong with it. That way you can change up color schemes and aren't stuck with only a few options!

  18. Wow! You have done a lot of work already! I love all the paint colors you chose!! I'm definitely all about lightening up rooms with light paint colors. Bill makes fun of me and says I would have a whole house in light grey and white if I could. He's right! Can't wait to see how you decorate!!

  19. isn't it amazing what a change painting makes? our living room feels transformed. My husband used to work at Lowes in the paint department and he said people would get so mad when they would buy grey and come back all pissed that it looked blue. We went a super light grey for the living room, I was worried it would be too light but I didn't want to go any darker and risk it looking too blue, and it doesn't, thank goodness. I want to paint more, but like you said - so expensive! The fireplace room looks completely different, and I love your entryway! Can't wait to see more!
