House Help: Bedding Dilemma

You know when you're going out to eat with your husband and you have two restaurant options and you can't decide between them so you tell him to pick one?  And then once he does pick one, you're not happy with the choice and realized how much you wanted to go to the other restaurant?  You actually did have a preference you just couldn't see it before.  I hope you know what I'm talking about or maybe I'm just a crazy person.

All of this to say... I'm stuck on our bedroom.  And I need your help.  Because maybe if the majority of you prefer one and I don't quite agree, I'll have a clearer idea of what I want.  One can hope ;)  Here is what I'm working with right now... ignore the terribly made bed.

I bought a new headboard and nightstands - both on sale right now if you're in the market.  I think the nightstands are too short compared to the bed but I'm just ignoring that for now.  What I'm really stuck on is the bedding situation.  I'm so over this duvet set (similar here) and ready for something new.  But, do I want to go with a bold comforter or play it safe with neutrals?  Here are my two inspiration pictures...

The all white bedding looks so crisp and I LOVE that I can buy this exact same comforter from Target right now for only $70.  I know I'm probably one of the only ones but I actually prefer comforters over duvets, anyway.  I also appreciate that I can always easily mix things up in the room by using throw pillows.  I can go from all neutrals to pops off color whenever I want without breaking the bank.  Only thing I'm worried about - how dirty is this going to get and is it going to go with the white nightstands that I just bought?

On the other hand... I also love the boldness of patterned, colored bedding.  It's refreshing and fun and major plus - I won't have to worry about it getting dirty all the time.  This particular bedding from Serena & Lilly is sold out sadly and I haven't been able to find another that I really like.  Maybe that's a sign?

Either way, I'm torn.  I'm itching to get the bedding ordered so I can start painting.  Oh joy ;)  Also on the 'to do' list for this room is new lamp shades, decorating the nightstands, possibly adding a rug, a DIY dresser and looking for the perfect mirror.  Still not sure what to do with the window right by the bed and if I should put something above the headboard... but those are decisions for another day.

So, what do you like better - neutral calmness or bold fun?

  1. I love the white!!! It looks beautiful however, I agree with you. It may get pretty dirty quickly :-( Sorry, that did not help you! HA

  2. I say go for the white and get bold accents: rug, pillows, nightstand decor. The beauty about white is that it can always be bleached and washed :)

  3. Loving the all white, I tried going that route for our bedroom and was vetoed *someone thinks it'll get too dirty/dingy ughhh*. I love how clean and crisp it looks and it really pops against darker walls and tufted headboards. Go for the all white ;-)

P.S. I'm still loving that we're bedside lamp twins! Those lamp shades will go perfect with the all white set!

  4. Girl, I'm facing the EXACT same dilemma! I've got the walls painted and my dresser painted a pop of color and now I can't find a comforter I like ANYWHERE! I've got a white duvet on it now and with the dogs, it stays dirty but white looks the best with grey walls. I've searched everywhere for new bedding and I don't think there's one out there :(

  5. I love both of them! For my entire life I have always had a bold colored comforter and last year when I moved in with my fiance I went with a white comforter and loved it because, just like you said, I could add pops of color with a throw or pillows. Now we have another colored comforter because we moved and I used the white comforter in the guest room and I miss it because it is a lot harder to find pillows to match and I feel like my bed is all bare. Hope this helps!

  6. I like them both, but I honestly think you should go with the neutral comforter. Sure, it may get dirty faster than the other one, but you'll wash it, and then it will be back to normal. No big deal! The neutral comforter will let you change things up all year long with pillows, colorful accents, etc. I would instead go for a bold rug if you want to inject some color into the room. Good luck!

  7. I'm all about the white comforter! Mixing in some fun throw pillows is perfect in my opinion. I had the same concerns but so far ours has been easy to clean, even with a messy husband and a dog! haha. Duvets are much easier to stick in the washer but I'm with you, for some reason I like comforters better. They don't wrinkle as much!

  8. i like the blue! if you do the white check out the cover in person -- we got a similar one from west elm for our wedding and i LOVED how it looked but you couldn't sit on the bed without feeling like you were going to rip the stitches (because of the pintucking). it was a real pain and we evenutally got rid of it :( xo jillian - cornflake dreams

  9. I'm all about the white/ivory comforters! I'm with you on comforters over duvets... they are so annoying! I am in the market for a new comforter/quilt for our King bed... Right now we just use the sheets and a cable knit blanket :/ I love the crisp white in the first photo, but understand your worry about it getting dirty. We used an ivory duvet cover for a while and never had any issues. Can't wait to see what you choose! I love your headboard and side tables!

  10. I love all white bedding! I used to have that Target comforter and loved it! I always prefer a comforter over a duvet because it is so much easier to clean and just seems so much snugglier. That comforter was my favorite and the only reason we got rid of it was because our pup got super duper sick on it and there was no coming back from it. P.S. don't let the dog sleep on your bed ;)

  11. THE TERRIBLY MADE BED?! Can you please come make my bed. SO I have that Target duvet cover and its made SO cheaply. I would go with a comforter version.

  12. I'm all for patterned comforters and I think the all white may be too much with the white nightstands like you said. If it makes you feel any better, I'm super indecisive too and house decisions are big ones… can't wait to see what you pick though!! xo

  13. I LOVE all white bedding. That is what I currently have now. Also if that is a poorly made bed then there is no hope for me!

  14. Here's what we did -- fun sheets, neutral coverlet (my hubby hates comforters). The way I see it, by doing this you can change the look completely by adding small details (pillows, wall decor, etc.). Plus, sheets are cheaper to change so we can change those up if we get tired of the look.

  15. You are not alone in your decision making process! I do that to my hubs all the time. haha. I got a white comforter for our wedding and its hard to keep clean, especially when your husband gets an ink stain on it that won't come out! I love the look of the white, but it has not done well in our house. :( I'm actually loving what you've got currently (I know that's not what you want to hear!). Maybe you could add some deep colored sheets to perk it up a bit and give you the change you're looking for?

  16. If that is a poorly made bed - I'm never showing you mine!!! I really love the bold pattern, I think with all white you might get bored or need to clean them more often!

  17. I LOVE an all-white bed, but here's the reality: If you have a pet, or kids, or you occasionally like to drink a glass of wine in bed, or you're a real live person who lives normally, it WILL get stained. As someone who had (past tense intentional) the first duvet with the divets (ours was from West Elm) I can tell you that they rip. If you sit on the bed and the pressure is in just the wrong spot, you'll hear an unbelievable tear! And it will just keep happening. Until you give up on it and it sits in a lump in your guest room closet.

Clearly, I vote for the pattern! ;)

  18. So funny this is your blog post today! I just updated our bedding and doing a post about it tomorrow! I went with the Tommy Hilfiger paisley duvet set from Macy's! It's on close out sale right now. It's also neutrals, grey, and white! Good luck!

  19. I had a white bedspread once (loved the idea of it). But then I found myself too scared to just plop down on it for fear of staining it. And after a while, it just started to discolor:( You could even see handprints where I pulled up the comforter every day, which weirded me out because I am super religious about clean hands. So, in short, if you're at all OCD like me, a white comforter is just not the way to go. I think a neutral bedding set, even the one you already have, would be great with some pops of color in the pillows! Get some European pillows - you know, the oversized square ones and then order some fun, pretty patterned shams from Wayfair or World Market, or wherever!!! Can't wait to see what you do!

  20. I'm a neutral calm person... especially when it comes to a bedroom.
Now a guest bedroom - that can be crazy... but I read somewhere that really, you rest & relax more in a calm bedroom with calm colors.
Take that for what you want... my bedroom is just a room full of clothes on the floor & dogs all over the bed :) haha

  21. white bedding is the way to go!!!!! We love ours and I have a patterned throw at the end of my bed for a little extra pop of color and for the dirty dogs to lounge on!!! Love the first inspiration photo!

  22. Love the white, BUT I have white bedding and my sweet pup is ALWAYS getting it dirty... I don't know if you will let Brady jump on your bed or not, but if you will, be prepared that it will get dirty very often (and in ways that you wouldn't suspect)... Scout will bring a nylabone on the bed and it will leave a spot some how (it does wash out, but I feel like I wash it every week, which is a lot for a duvet)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I actually love your current duvet! I like the idea of prints- and the photo you picked, but I think you're less likely to get tired of neutrals because you can change up throw pillows or add a fun throw to give it more color.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My friend has that same duvet! Have you though of spicing it up w/ pops of color? My friend has a coraly orange with hers and it is super fun! I love the headboard...does it attach to the frame?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love all white bedding because it's so easy to change the feel of the room by just switching out the pillows and a throw. Plus, for me at least, there's just something so crisp and clean and cozy about all white bedding!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Right there with you on preferring comforters over duvets. I can't handle how the duvet and comforter constantly slip. but, regardless...

I would go with all white. It really doesn't get too dirty, plus the ability to wash and/or bleach is nice to now. I saw someone suggested a white coverlet, which is what I have in our guest room....it's that much easier to wash because it's not as heavy as a full comforter.

Can't wait to see what you decide!

  27. here's what I think - go for the white, and get a colourful throw / quilt for the bottom of the bed like you have now, and that way you get a pop of colour and can change it whenever you want. thats what i am going to do anyway.
i have one black, one white and one grey cat and their hair gets alllll over the comforter and I HATE it. Goldens do shed, but I think it would be ok for you. i am going to get a white quilt / coverlet for the bed and then have the comforter / duvet down the bottom if that makes sense. i think the quilt or whatever won't hold as much cat hair as the comforter does. anyway i'm rambling - i think the white nightstands will be fine, maybe put some pops of colour on the walls above it or something :)

  28. White looks pretty and crisp, but in theory I think it's harder to keep pretty. We have tan bedding in our bedroom and I like the idea of changing pillows to change things up. But I"m a huge fan of BIG pops of color, so I'm leaning towards the pattern. Hope I helped?!@?! maybe?

  29. I think that what you have now is pretty. Sorry, I know that doesn't help!! Brittany had a good idea about the sheets. Or why don't you just get some new fun pillows? Our bedroom is a similar color to yours and we have a lighter yellow quilt and neutral pillows. Including ones that have polka dots on them. :-) White is pretty but I would be concerned about it getting dirty all of the time. :-/

  30. Ok I really love both, but I am a fan of the clean crisp white. I can't say I'd ever actually go with it, because I feel like it wouldn't stay so white but I LOVE the look!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I definitely prefer the white. Our pintuck duvet is technically a very light blue-gray, but it's so light it's basically a neutral. We had that first, then switched to a very bold rust red comforter, and that was fun for a while, but I'm so glad we switched back. I guess it comes down to personal style but I've figured out that my style is more simple rather than bold (even though I love the idea of bold). The good news is that with a neutral, it's really easy to throw in a bold piece when you're feeling feisty!

  32. I think a bedding set with blues and/or greens would be great against the neutral walls!

    ReplyDelete
  33. We had a Golden. You have a Golden. Our little lady was always rubbing herself along the end of our bed. I would stay away from the white unless you leave some sort of bed skirt over the end.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like the white with bright colored pillows!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would die to have white bedding again! Keep puppy off the bed so you can (we are bad dog parents and thus no more white duvet!). A big dark print or rug would be so fun with the lighter bedding, too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I say do the white! I loved our white duvet and it's a blank slate for the fun pillows and even a fun throw. Get a fun textured or patterned blanket and either leave it off, leave it folded at the end, or pull it all the way up on a day that you want a little more spunk! ;)

Our dog got our white duvet pretty dirty, but it was just a plain one from Target that was only like $15 so it wasn't a huge loss. :)

  37. Love all of this! I was having a major bedding dilemna, so right now, my bed is very mix and match. I have a simple white comforter, and then I added colorful pillows from a variety of places. (I have a total of about 7 on my bed right now) I've loved how it turned out! And then you can always change out a comforter for something more bold a little later! P.S. LOVE your headboard!

  39. My vote is for neutrals. There is nothing more luxurious than a bed with a big fluffy white comforter. And about the nightstands, we used to have high nightstands in our bedroom, and we found that we tended to accidentally hit things off of them or knock the lampshade, or even sometimes kind of roll our heads over onto them during the night because they were almost exactly the same height as out bed. Just my personal experience.

  40. My vote is for something that you won't freak when you roll around ( ;) )and it isn't fluffy anymore :) Last thing you want to be is stressed about how perfectly fluffy the comforter needs to be to have the right "look." Good luck shopping! :)

  41. I have a white comforter and I love how it matches everything. If I want to bring colors into the room, it's through the rug, nightstands, lamps, or pillows! I'm constantly changing the color scheme so that's why I need something that is extremely versatile. I've had a white comforter for over a year and it is still very clean... and believe me I don't get to wash it nearly as much as I would like to either!

However, everything in your bedroom already seems to be a very neutral palette, and I'm assuming that you probably aren't going to be laying down a rug on top of the carpet, or repainting the walls... so maybe the pop of color should come from your bedspread! Either way, both of those bed spreads are beautiful and I'm looking forward to seeing what you pick!

  42. I love the white! You can use accents to spruce it up and it is much easier to change the look of your room. Most comforters are washable but they are not meant to last forever. I get bored and change mine a couple times a year, so I would go with white!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love the white with splashes of colour - my whole house is like that! It always looks so clean and crisp, and you can change it up often with the pops of colour x

  44. I vote white! I'm going for white bedding and adding fun sheets and throw pillows. Be careful with that duvet from Target. I had the grey one last year and it always looked wrinkled and lost it's softness with each wash. I found some great white bedding on Bed Bath & Beyond on sale!

  45. Go with the white bedding and then go nuts on your accent pillows. It's a great price and you'll be able to change up the look easily with new pillows when you are ready for a change. You could always add color in the room with a rug, fun curtains or lamp shades.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm a comforter person too!!! I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE! So... ordinarily I would say GO WITH PATTERNS... but now that I realize how painting walls changes my life... I say go with the white so you can mix it up more often... just my two cents. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Here's my advice, stay AWAY from white bedding. You'll have to wash it more than normal, because you'll be able to see every ounce of dirt. We had white bedding for awhile, and I regretted it instantly once I saw how quickly it got dirty, and comforters are a PAIN to wash!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm totally a fan of all white!! Even though you can see dirt more easily, it's just a great reminder to change your sheets more often :) My fiance talked me into a grey one when I was trying to get him more excited about home decor (a pretty daunting task) and I've regretted it every day for the last 2 years!
