Splurge or Save

I've been seeing this fun post throughout blog-land (thanks to April for the original idea!) and today I'm chiming in on whether I 'splurge or save'.  Overall, I'm a pretty frugal person.  I like to spend money - a little too much sometimes - but only when I feel comfortable with the amount of saving I've done.  That way I can shop guilt-free and never have to break out those bad news credit cards!

Now, do I splurge or save on...

ONE | A cocktail dress to wear to a wedding
Save.  Because I'm one of those people that once I've worn a dress, I'm not going to wear it again, at least for a long time.  Heaven forbid people see that I'm re-wearing a dress on Instagram!  So I save and go with cheaper dresses from Forever 21, H&M or Nordstrom Rack.

TWO | A glass of wine at a restaurant
Save.  I'll usually go for the cheapest glass because I'm not a wino - honestly it all taste the same to me so why spend the extra few bucks?!

THREE | A hotel room
Almost splurge!  I like a nice hotel... but I also don't require staying at the Ritz.  I do want the best room I can get though.  Vacation is a time to spoil yourself so if that means spending double the amount to get an oceanfront room, I'm in.

Oceanfront on our Hawaiian honeymoon

FOUR | A haircut
You guys know I splurge on this one.  Remember the $300 haircut?  I do - my husband will never let me forget it ;)

FIVE | Wild card
My wild card splurge is makeup.  I have pretty sensitive skin and most drugstore products irritate things further. And in my personal opinion, I find that drugstore products just don't work as well.  I'm willing to spend the extra money on my makeup and I can do some serious damage in Sephora!

My happy place

Tell me, what's your biggest splurge?!

  2. I agree with you. I'm a big splurger on FOOD,though. Whether it's at the store or a restaurant, I'm all about the high end good foodstuff!

  3. i totally agree with your splurges.. you wear your hair everyday so you gotta spend a little on that one! hah but maybe not $300 xo jillian - cornflake dreams

  4. I get most of my special occasion dresses from F21, Victorias Secret, and H&M as well and people are always blown away when they find out where my dresses are from. I will be recycling a dress this weekend for a wedding, but that's because no one there has seen me in it. All my CT peeps have but not my FL peeps... win-win! :)

  5. I completely agree with you on saving on the dress. I have too many dresses that I don't need to spend a lot on one. I also agree with the splurge on a haircut. You gotta love your hair cut!!

  6. I agree with you on these! (except wine, I splurge on a glass so I don't have to on a bottle ha!) I just can't do cheap makeup, the splurge always does better!

  7. Honestly I agree with you on almost everything! The only that changed was the wine thing after I lived in SF where wine was super importante. But it's still not on a splurge though. I don't order the most expensive but not the cheapest. All those day trips to Napa spoiled me. LOL

  8. I'll splurge on a leather handbag, nice glasses or boots and always try to get great deals on party dresses, trendy items and decor for my house. Fun post :)

  9. I am totally with you on all of these! But sometimes I splurge on things I know I could save on.

  10. Love this and I'm with you on all of these!!! The $300 haircut story we will never forget!

  11. Love this post! I'm with you on the cocktail dresses for a wedding or special event - Ryan always tells me I have a closet full of dresses to choose from - he just doesn't understand that I can't be caught dead wearing the same dress to two different events. :) That photo of you from your honeymoon is too cute!

  12. OMG the 300$ haircut. I remember that! I'm with you on the hotel thing too! Splurge--ish :) I also opt for the cheapest wine at a restaurant. It's all gonna have the same affect :)

  13. I could not agree more with this post!

  14. Oh, the $300 haircut! My husband wouldn't let me forget it either! I agree with you on these. If we are going on vacation, I will definitely spend more for a better room but if it's just for a weekend trip, it doesn't really matter as long as it's CLEAN! There are some makeup products I splurge on and some from drugstores I've found I like but my biggest splurge is on jeans. I would much rather spend good money on a pair of jeans that last me years, literally, then waste $40-$50 on a pair that don't even hold up one season.

  15. OMG once i had a $270 dollar haircut and it was not even FABULOUS. too scared to skimp on a haircut though!!!

  16. I agree 100% with this list, with one small exception... I'm a "wino" so I go for the mid-grade glass of wine. The expensive ones have a ridic markup that I can't get over, but the cheap ones sometimes leave an alcohol burn in my throat. And amen to expensive hair cuts! I'm going next week and will drop about $300 on a cut and color. Sorry hubs. It just has to happen!

  17. I laughed at the dress thing because when I was deciding on a picture for our holiday card, I almost picked one where I was wearing the same dress that I'm wearing in last years card. Haha. Chris is the decider of hotels when we travel and he's particular. I agree about the wine and I usually do that too. I also agree with you about the makeup too. :-) I hope that you are having a good day so far too!!

  18. Love these! Completely agree on hotels - splurge-ish is the way to go! And yes, Sephora is a dangerous place for me. I try not to go in there too often :)

  19. How fun. Girl--- $300 for a haircut!! *I'm picking my jaw up off the floor*

I agree with the splurging for the best room available. I was SO happy to have an ocean front room with a great balcony and view of the sunset on our honeymoon in Maui. It just totally made the trip!

  20. Is it terrible that I would be all splurge, splurge, splurge?! I inherited my mother's fine taste!

  21. I'm with you on all of this. I will always splurge on a haircut because, hello, it's one of the first things people notice!

  22. I'm with you on the wine -- I absolutely love wine, but it doesn't have to be the most expensive one for me to enjoy it. And I tend to splurge on makeup too -- my makeup bag has too many dollars in it right now, ha!

  23. My splurge is on vacation as welZ usually I don't mind spending tons of money..! It's vacation, have to enjoy!

  24. Definitely agree with # 1 and 2. For the hotel rooms, I do both depending on the occasion. i've gone big when I can but don't mind the bare minimum (not motel status though) if we're doing a trip like Chicago where we never really used the room except to sleep.

  25. ooh fun! i think i have this post scheduled for next week, i forget lol.
a $300 haircut? holy moly! i am definitely the kind of person that doesn't like to wear things twice either, oops lol. and i'm the opposite, i wouldn't spend double for an oceanfront room.. i'd just go outside to the ocean ;)

  26. I've been meaning to do one of these! I've just starting splurging on wine at restaurants and I always splurge on hotel rooms. I'm back and forth on make up as well.

  27. I agree with you! Makeup is hands down my guilty pleasure! I spend soooo much money on make up... I love makeup and it makes me feel good about myself, so that's my way of justifying my crazy splurge sessions. Lol!

  28. My biggest splurge is YARN :) I hate cheap yarn. I have been known to spend $30 on ONE skein of yarn... & the project took 3 skeins... You can feel the difference :)
A hotel room is a must splurge. I loathe cheap hotels... I get all freaked out & want to break out my black light!

  29. I definitely splurge on travel well in regards to hotels. I really wish I was in the financial standpoint to be able to not fly coach because dang those seats are so tiny!!! I always just say it's a short plane ride I'm a little person get me there however and then we can relax in our amazing upgraded room ;-) Hair and makeup are definite splurges. Oh and one or two really nice handbags!

  30. I think vacations are totally worth the splurge- and that view you had was absolutely amazing!! And $300 for a hair cut… oh my god. Ryan would probably kill me too. I hate spending money on hair and am now trying to color it just when it really needs it since I'm trying to get back to my natural color. :)

  31. Love this post! So fun to see what others choose to splurge and save on - yours are very similar to what mine would be. And I totally remember when you wrote that post about the $300 hair cut, and my heart dropped for you. I can only imagine what my reaction would have been in that same situation!!!

  32. I'm the same on hotels, I say I'm a hotel snob but I just want a nice room, doesn't have to be the Ritz though ;) Oh yes, the $300 haircut!! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  33. LOVE this!!!! I may have to borrow the idea - and yes, I'm a total haircut splurge too... But $300?! Wheww, that's high!! :) :)

  34. I agree with all of your responses, hands-down! I'm horrible at re-wearing a dress, no matter how much I think I'll wear it again so saving for special occasion wear is a no-brainer now. Splurges on birthday dinners are a must though ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm with you on every single one of these! I totally think vacation is the best excuse to splurge (nothing too crazy, but upgrades for sure!), and have learned the hard way (too many times) that skimping on beauty products and services just isn't worth it.

  36. Oh gosh I need to read about the $300 haircut! I wish I could splurge on a hotel room but that's hard to convince the hubby on. Fun post!

  37. omg a $300 hair cut!? wow, I thought my $60 hair cut was bad lol! I remember I was in like 6th grade when I got it, so my mom was pretty pissed off! I think the one thing I like to splurge on is FOOD! I usually like to eat at home but if I am out and about and getting hungry then I have no problem spending a few bucks on a meal.

  39. I splurge on BareMinerals and Rodan-Fields. Super sensitive skin requires it!

  40. Sephora is my for sure splurge, but our other one is dinner. I still sweat palm over crazy expensive dinners but I have gotten more used to it. Haha

  41. I feel the exact some way you do about hotel rooms! It's doesn't have to be the tippy top tier, but I want it to be nice!
