Friday's Five 1/30

I kind of can't believe it's Friday already.  This week went so fast!  But I'm not complaining - bring on the weekend, bring on the Super Bowl (food), bring on February.  I am ready.

A few highlights from the week...

ONE | New Rug
Our new rug is here!  I finally pulled the trigger on this Jute Chenille Herringbone rug from West Elm and am in looove.  It's perfect in our fireplace room.  Brady boy is a big fan, too - so much so that he's now gated off from the rug because he shows his love by trying to tear it apart.  Sigh.

TWO | Donuts
Will someone make these and send them to me?  Please and thank you.  I think donuts are going to be on the agenda this weekend... but probably the take out kind, not the homemade kind because I've got a lot of Super Bowl cooking to do!

THREE | Dry Shampoo
I'm on the hunt for a new dry shampoo.  I've used Batiste for as long as I can remember and while I like it, I feel like it's almost stopped working for me.  And Lord knows I'm not going to start washing my hair more than once a week so help a girl out - what's your favorite brand?

FOUR | Parenthood
I can't believe it's over.  Last night was the series finale and it really did not disappoint - I think it was probably the most perfect series finale I've ever watched.   Lots and lots of ugly/happy/sad tears were shed.  Goodbye Braverman family.

FIVE | Link Love
So many of my favorite bloggers have had such great posts this week that I had to share a few!

A fabulous DIY bathroom makeover on Love and Bellinis // We made these 'Bangin Good Chicken Nuggets' (over zoodles instead) from Skinny Taste this week and they were so good // How to mix and match pillows on Sarah M. Dorsey Design // 4 apps for editing pictures on your iPhone from Milk Bubble Tea

Well, that's all I got for today - have a wonderful weekend and don't party too hard on Sunday night!

Winter Fashion Blahs

This is about the time of year that I get real sick of winter.  The holidays are long past us and we still have a good two or three months until any real signs of spring show up.  It's cold, it's dark, it's just BLAH and my main goal in life is staying warm.  All I want to do is wear my leggings and an over-sized sweater and besides, who can even see what I'm wearing under my giant North Face parka anyway?

But, I'm a big believe in the fact that getting dressed everyday (in a decently cute, put together outfit) makes you feel so much better about yourself.  A sequined cuffed sweater can make a dreary day a bright one and a pair of leather leggings can make you not even care about the freezing temperatures because at least you look good.

Here are a few pieces that are a must in your closet to help beat the winter blahs...

A Beautiful (Warm) Coat
I've had my eye on this one for quite a while, just patiently waiting for it to come back in stock.  Expensive, yes, but considering that we wear coats here in the Midwest 50% of the year, it will more than pay for itself in cost per wear!

Over The Knee Boots
Perfect for date night!  I have a major obsession with over the knee boots right now.  I don't own a pair because I'm still waiting to find the *perfect* ones, if they're out there.  This Sam Edelman pair might be it, although I'm kind of partial to lighter colors.

Blanket Scarves
Nothing new here but they're warm and they're cute so they're a winter staple.  I just ordered this one, from American Eagle of all places!  It's really reasonably priced and comes in a bunch of different colors.

Winter Whites
I love love love this look but still haven't taken the plunge myself.  Doesn't this look like the coziest sweater?  I need.  I like that it's not bright white - leave that to your white denim.

Anyone else just want to live in their yoga pants this time of year or is that just me?!  What's your favorite winter weather look?

How To Get More Blog Comments

Some of my favorite types of posts to read are the ones that help me become a better blogger.  You know, the posts like 'what I wish I knew when I started blogging' or 'how to increase your social media traffic'.  I'm always looking to learn and improve my blog and I'm sure you are, too!  So today, I wanted to talk about comments - specifically, how to get more of them.  Because if there is one thing us bloggers live for, it's comments, right?

Here are a few really easy, proven ways to increase the number of comments on your blog.

Make Commenting Easier
TURN OFF CAPTCHA!  I will rarely comment on a blog that has it turned on because 99% of the time, I can't read those little squiggly numbers and letters.  It's such a pain and ain't nobody got time for that.  Most people turn it on because of spam comments but instead of making your readers jump through hoops, just approve your comments before publishing or switch to Disqus.

Now, you may not know you have captcha turned on (this happened to me once and I'm still sorry!) so check out this tutorial to make sure it's not/how to turn it off.

But don't just add your link and disappear - make sure to mingle!  I try and comment on five new blogs for every linkup I join or at the very least, comment on the hosts blog.  If you need any suggestions on linkups to join, I'd love to share some of my favorites with you.

Leave Comments
You get what you put out there is true even in blogging.  Anytime someone new leaves a comment on my blog, I always go and visit their blog and comment back.  Blogging is all about community and I've made so many friends that have become regular readers just through commenting back and forth.

Ask A Question
I've found that when ending my post with a question (related to the post, of course), I always get more comments.  It makes it easy for readers to chime in and participate in your blog.  This is a bonus for the writer, too - I can't tell you how many times you guys have helped me out with your answers and suggestions, especially with home related things!

Reply To Comments
People are taking precious time out of their day to leave you a thoughtful response, so it's the polite thing to do to respond.  I know sometimes we're swamped and can't reply to everything and that's okay - but if a blogger is consistently not responding to my comments, I usually stop leaving them.  Even just a quick 'thank you' will do!

Make sure you aren't a 'no reply blogger' - if you are, no one can respond to your comments.  I get anywhere from 5-10 commenters each day that I can't reply to and that makes me sad.  Follow this super easy tutorial to fix that real quick!

But remember, no blogger is perfect and even someone who is trying their hardest can't be doing all of these things, everyday.  It's important to give other bloggers (and ourselves!) grace and to make sure blogging isn't all about the numbers and who has the most page views and comments, etc. - it should be about having fun!

So, what do you think?  What's your best trick to getting your readers commenting?

The Best Tater Tots Ever

So this was the text I got on Sunday night from my husband:

"Want to host a Super Bowl party?"

Ummm, sure!  Nothing like throwing together a last minute party in an area of the house that is 0% done.  But hey, we need friends so a party we will have.  Moving problems.

I spent all day yesterday scouring Pinterest, putting together a menu and figuring out how to make our living/dining rooms look somewhat presentable come Sunday.  One thing I KNEW we would be serving are these bacon wrapped tater tots.  I had to share the recipe with you today in case any of you are in the same boat as me.  Make these, I promise they are very good.  And very bad for you.  Two must have qualities for Super Bowl finger food!

Shopping List
1/2 bag of frozen tater tots, thawed at room temperature
Cheddar cheese (I used Sharp Vermont by Cracker Barrel), cut into 1/4 inch strips
Bacon, strips cut into thirds
1/4 cup brown sugar
Parsley for garnish, if desired

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Lightly oil a baking sheet or put down tinfoil.  I always do tinfoil - it makes cleanup so easy!

Wrap each tater tot and cheese strip in piece of bacon.

Dredge each bacon wrapped tater tot through brown sugar.

Place seam side down on baking sheet.

Place in oven and bake for 20 minutes, turning halfway through.

Garnish with parsley and serve!

A crowd favorite for sure.  What's on your Superbowl Menu?  Anything you'd recommend that I make?

Weekend Snaps: That Time Brady Swallowed A Sock

Highlights of the weekend:  making major process on our master bathroom (thank you Target), a clean puppy, delicious lasagna soup, an Amazon order placed (can't wait to read this and also picked up these!), cleaning out my closet and some pampering time with one of my favorite skin care products, Exfolikate.

Lowlights of the weekend:  the Dexter series finale - just, WHAT.  Terrible ending.  I realize we're a year and a half late but anyone else agree?  Oh, and Brady swallowed a sock (!!).

The guy loves him some socks.  They're the only thing that turn him into a mad man.  We keep them hidden but on Friday afternoon, he hit the jackpot and managed to get a hold of one of Nick's socks.  A lot of me chasing him in circles and bribing with treats ensued but to no avail.  Finally I used our ex-pen and set up a make shift gate to trap him and hallelujah - it worked!  I caught him and we had a two minute struggle in which I took a few paws/scratches to the face all while trying to pry his mouth open... when I heard GULP.  He swallowed the sock whole.

I started panicking.  After calling Nick, our vet and consulting Google (of course), we headed over to the emergency animal hospital ASAP to induce vomiting before the sock started digesting.  Luckily this story has a happy ending as the poor guy threw the sock up on the first try!

He was pretty loopy the rest of the afternoon thanks to the drugs so needless to say, we had to cancel our plans for that night and stick at home with him to make sure he didn't have a bad reaction.  I'm happy to report he was back to grabbing the dish towel off our counter within a few hours so he's going to be just fine ;) If only this was a lesson learned but I highly doubt this will be our last emergency vet trip...

The rest of the weekend was the same as usual - house work, lots of good eating and just hanging out.  I'm wrapping my Sunday up at the moment in my ugliest comfiest pajamas while Nick is at hockey and binge eating chocolate peanut butter gelato.  Life is good.

Hope you had a great weekend, too!

Friday's Five 1/23

The biggest success of the week?  I AVOIDED THE FLU!  I was so sure I was going to get it - I even scheduled my posts out ahead of time (which, side note, is really nice and I should do that more often) but thankfully I'm still healthy and think I may be out of the woods.  Cue the Taylor Swift song.  Cheers to Friday and a much better weekend than the last!

ONE | Volleyball
The church we've been going to has open volleyball in the gym every Thursday and last night was our first time attending.  It was a lot of fun - everyone was really nice and it just felt good to get out there and play again!

TWO | Dalmatian Print
Literally obsessed with this bathroom.  And dalmatian print in general.  Wallpaper in our half bath is going to be a must!

THREE | Figode Ankle Boots
After seeing these ankle boots on both Zelle and Pamela's blog, I wanted them for myself.  And after seeing that they were on major sale, I NEEDED them!  They're both cute and comfy - now if only the snow would melt so I can finally wear them outside of my house.

FOUR | Zoodles
I jumped on the zoodle bandwagon (using this baby) and haven't looked back!  We made chicken teriyaki and it was amazing - didn't even miss the rice.  What are your favorite zoodle recipes?  I want to try them all!

FIVE | Blog Problem
I have no idea why but for the last couple of weeks, my paragraph breaks have been disappearing from my blog posts.  I can type up the post and everything looks good but if I need to re-open the post to edit something, all of my paragraph breaks disappear.  I then have to manually re-enter them which is a big pain in the you know what.  Has anyone had this problem before?  I can't find any solutions online for how to resolve this in Blogger. Help?!

We're off to see Foxcatcher with some friends tonight - hope you all have a wonderful weekend ahead!

Look for Less: Home Decor

One thing I've realized with the new house is that buying furniture is expensive.  Like, very expensive - especially if we're talking about furnishing an entire house as we're doing!  It's been important to me to splurge on certain things (like rugs and bedding) but this means that I need to save in other places.  I love a good deal so it's been fun envisioning what I like via Pinterest or other blogs and then hunting down those same pieces in my price range.

Here are three 'looks for less' - although none of them are too expensive if you do feel like making the splurge ;)

It's been a while since I've had an ol' fess sesh here on the blog.  So why waste any time?  Let's get right to the good stuff!

I confess that I'm having a serious love affair with Pinterest right now.  I go in waves of love and boredom and right now I'm straight up obsessed.  I've been wasting way too much time pinning recipes I'm never going to make, clothes I'm never going to buy and projects I'm never going to do.  But hey, I'm having fun.  Join me here!

I confess that I suck at taking off my eye makeup at night.  I'm a freak about washing my face and all that jazz but I'll usually leave my mascara/eyeliner on for like two.. three.. days.  It's so bad.  Hence why I never wear eyeshadow.  Because you have to take that stuff off every night.  I'm thinking about investing in this remover to help make life easier - supposedly it takes everything off in one swipe.  Doubt it but I'll give it the old college try (what does that even mean?).

I confess that I pretty much ate an entire bag of Snyder's peanut butter pretzels in one day.  They are so good.  And in my defense, it is kind of a small bag.  It's risky business being quarantined from your sick husband in the living room that's connected to the kitchen.

I confess that this post was probably one of the hardest ones I've ever written.  Or maybe awkward is the better word.  It's just weird to write nice things about yourself.  Not to mention, the whole time I kept wondering if it was coming off "too braggy" - I still really hope not!

What do you got for me?  Tell me I'm not alone over here in my Pinterest obsession, pretzel binge eating, three day old makeup?

Can't Live Without Beauty Products

I realize this post title is a bit dramatic because technically, yes, I could live without these products.  But that is just not a world I want to live in.

While I'm a big fan of trying new beauty products - you never know when you're going to find your next must have, like my recent eyelash primer obsession - and tend to switch my beauty routine up with the seasons, there a few products that I always use and come back to.  Products that I keep backups of my backups.  Products I'd recommend to anyone.  And here they are...

La Roche-Posay's Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cream is my longest running beauty product love.  I've been using this stuff for six years now, all thanks to a dermatologist that saved my skin after a bad reaction to The Body Shop products in college.  It's perfect for my sensitive, dry skin and everyone that I've recommended it to sings its praises as well.

I don't think I've touched any of my other brow products since purchasing Benefit's Gimme Brow.  Perfect brows in less than 30 seconds?  Yes please.

Personally, I think primer is a must for everyone, every day.  I love Make Up For Ever's HD Microperfecting Primer in green as it balances out the redness in my skin.

You all know my obsession with Benefit's They're Real by now, right?

I use a few Kerastase products but this one is the one I can't live without.  The Bain Oleo-Relax is the best. shampoo. ever.  I've also heard Princess Kate uses it too so that in itself should sell you!

You won't have to worry about smudged, chipped, dull nails anymore with the Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat.  It does just what the name implies and also helps your polish stay on much longer than normal.

Have you tried any of these?  If there's one I'd have to recommend out of all the others, it would be the shampoo.  I'm obsessed.  It's really good stuff.  Let me know what your favorite must have product is below!

Ps. I feel like we should take a moment of silence for my lost Sephora VIB Rouge status.  So long red card, it was fun while it lasted.

Weekend Snaps

We had big plans for this weekend.  Friday we were going to have dinner at our favorite pizza spot in town and see American Sniper and on Saturday we were going to go skiing.  Well... you know what they say about the best laid plans.  They never work out.  And that's exactly what happened this weekend!

On Friday, we got to our pizza spot only to find out they had a long wait which meant we wouldn't make our movie in time - strike one.  We headed to another nearby diner to grab a quick bite to eat which was still good but just not quite the pizza we were craving.

Afterwards, we made our way over to the movie theater... and American Sniper was sold out.  We tried another theater and same thing - strike two.  At this point we figured the night just wasn't meant to be and headed home to have a fire and watch Dexter.  At least Brady appreciated this alternate plan ;)

Saturday morning, we woke to a warm-front of 40 degrees.  Sad that that is considered warm here in January!  While the change in weather was definitely appreciated, it did not make for good skiing conditions so that was out - strike three.

Needing something to do instead, we got to work on our never-ending house to do list.  I painted our master bathroom and Nick took off all of our brass doorknobs and spray painted them (following this tutorial).  Everything looks so good and the day ended up being quite productive!  Later, we decided to give our date night a second try and succeeded this time.  The pizza was worth the wait and American Sniper was amazing.  Sort of hard to watch with knowing whats coming but very well done.

And then yesterday, things totally went downhill.  The highlight was having McDonalds for breakfast but soon after, Nick came down with the flu and the rest of the day was spent quarantined in our separate living rooms.  Strike four, I suppose.

Here's hoping your weekend was a bit better (and healthier) than our weekend!

Five on Friday 1/16

Happy Friday!  Thanks for all your help yesterday with my rug dilemma (first world problems).  I finally decided to go with the West Elm herringbone jute rug but now the size I need is sold out.  Womp womp.  It does feel good to have made a decision at the least!

Here are a few other highlights from the week...

ONE | Puppy Class
Brady boy had his first puppy class this week!  It was kind of hilarious.  There are six puppies in the class and they were all over the place on Tuesday night.  I think he probably had the most energy but he was the only one that didn't bark at all so that's a win in my book.  We're looking forward to the next seven weeks and hopeful that they can cure this guy from jumping up on counters and stealing towels.

TWO | Oscar Buzz
Yesterday the nominees were announced for the 2015 Academy Awards.  I always love to watch but usually it's for the fashion since I haven't seen any of the movies.  This year that's going to change and I want to see all of the top picks before the show next month!  We're going to start with American Sniper this weekend.

THREE | Goodnight Macaroon
I have a new love - an online boutique called Goodnight Macaroon.  They have the most adorable clothes but their coat selection is particularly on point.  Which is good for me because it's like -20 degrees over here.  This beauty is my favorite.

FOUR | Florida Bound
Speaking of cold weather... goodbye because Florida, here we come!  We booked our yearly spring break trip this week and I am counting down the days.  We're going to try out Clearwater Beach for the first time so any recommendations for that area are more than welcome!

FIVE | The Survey Says
Thank you so, so, so much to everyone who took my blog survey this week!  You guys are awesome and I got some really great feedback (it's still open if you missed it, click here).  It appears that lifestyle, home decorating and beauty are your favorite posts so be on the lookout for more of those.  Luckily those are also my favorite to write :)

Enjoy your weekend!

The Rug Dilemma

After a couple months of house updates being stalled due to getting Brady and then the holidays, it feels good to get things going again.  We've painted, we've bought furniture, bedding and accessories, we've even attempted DIYs.  Basically, we've been busy.  I think we've done more in the last two weeks than in the last two months!

Today I was planning on sharing the entryway and our bedroom but I'm SO close to being done with both of those rooms that I'm going to hold off until I can do a "grand reveal".  I know, I suck.  Coming soon, though I promise!

The fireplace room is another area that is almost there but I need your help.  I'm stuck on the rug/coffee table situation.  Here's where we're at right now...

couch // pillows (exact sold out - similar) // mirror

I'm really happy with how it's coming together!  But I am ready to say goodbye to the dark coffee table (it shows every piece of dust and dog hair) and the rug (need a bigger one).  I also majorly need curtains - in every room of my house but that's another story.

So, here are the two rugs I'm debating between:

ONE | Jute + Cowhide
I'm obsessed with the layered look but is it too much for the space?  This Maui Jute rug is on sale for a killer price right now - hence the reason I need help so I can make a quick decision!  I'd just be on the hunt for a reasonably priced cowhide...

TWO | Jute Chenille Herringbone
Again with the jute but I love the pattern on this rug.  It's subtle and I think the colors would match perfectly with everything I already have.

I'm also torn between doing an ottoman or a traditional coffee table.  Too many choices.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on what you think would look best because I could seriously go any way!

And finally, I want to share my January goals to get done around the house.  I'm nothing if not a list person so this will be great in holding me accountable.  That way I can finish the entryway and bedroom and share them with all of you ;)

+ Paint master bathroom
+ Spray paint all of the gold door knobs in the house
+ New pillows and down comforter for our bed
+ Research dressers on Craigslist
+ Choose and order a rug and light fixture for the entryway
+ Research light fixtures for upstairs hallway
+ Figure out what we want to do in living room for built ins

Thanks for following along on my house decorating adventure.  You guys have really helped me in previous posts - ie. not going with white bedding - and I can't wait to hear what you have to say about the rug situation!

Housekeeping + HELP!

Hello, hello!

Today I just wanted to stop in real quick with a bit of blog housekeeping.  As you know, the blog got a pretty new design last week and I'm still in love.  I've also said goodbye to the last traces of my old name 'Slice of Life' (anyone remember those days?) by switching email addresses.  You can now reach me at

Which brings me to my next point - you can now find all of my contact info anytime you want by clicking on the Contact page up above.  Yes, FINALLY my pages are updated.  You'll also see an About section and all of my popular posts are filed under the Popular page.  I'm excited about this and hope it helps things run a bit more smoothly around here!

Lastly, I was hoping you could all do me a tiny favor.  I really want the blog to reflect what you guys want to read about and since I'm the worst at understanding blog stats (does anyone know what all that crazy stuff means?), I thought I would offer a quick anonymous survey.  It's only a few questions, it'll take 30 seconds tops and it would mean so much to me if you could give me your feedback!  I've disabled comments on this post in the hopes that you'll take the survey instead :)

Click HERE for a direct link to the survey.

I'm looking forward to what 2015 brings for the blog and I can't wait to hear what you have to say!
Thanks again and happy Wednesday!

All Hail The Crockpot

One of the only things I enjoy about winter is my crockpot.  I heart the crockpot.  I know it's usable all year-round but I tend to put mine to work most during these cold months.  The frigid temps call for warm, hearty meals and there are few things better than coming home to a delicious smelling house, knowing dinner is already prepared for you!  Here are three of my favorite, go-to, never fail crockpot recipes.

White Chicken Chili from Gimme Some Oven
Only 5 ingredients!  I top mine with avocado, sour cream and pepperjack cheese to take things up a notch.

Creamy Tortellini Sausage Soup from Queen Bee Coupons
With sausage and mushrooms, this is a man approved dinner.

Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches from Wanna Bite
I add in a hefty squirt of BBQ sauce to the crockpot before cooking to even out the spicy hot sauce.  Top with blue cheese crumbles or ranch dressing and pickles, yum!

Loaded Potato Soup from Mom Spark
Not even close to a healthy meal but oh so good.  Don't forget the bacon on top!

And now I'm drooling.  I'm always looking for new crockpot recipes to mix things up so be sure to share yours below!  We're trying this butternut squash soup recipe for the first time tomorrow night and I'll be sure to report back.  Enjoy!

Scenes From The Weekend

Another great and productive weekend in the books!

Things started off on a high note on Friday with a fun mail day - Erin Gates new book, Elements of Style and the always entertaining Cards Against Humanity.  Brady also received a pair of nail clippers but those weren't quite cute enough to make the picture ;)

That night, it FINALLY stopped snowing so we decided to go out and try a new restaurant/brewery, Latitude 42.  I had the seafood fettucini and it did not disappoint.

On Saturday, we spent the day playing in the snow (Brady loooves it) and taking on our biggest painting project of all - the stairwell.  It goes up about 20 feet so we had to set our ladder up on the stairs, balance on the very top and then use a pole to get our roller/edge on the wall.  Slightly scary but also a success!  We ended up going with Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter and it looks so good.

I also finally ordered new bedding since West Elm was running a 20% off sale - big moves are being made on the house and it feels really good!  We later got cleaned up and grabbed a quick bite to eat at a neighborhood bar before calling it a night.

Sunday was for a waffle breakfast, church, errands, football and the Golden Globes.  Nothing too exciting but it's always nice to get a few things checked off your 'to do' list!  Hope you had a good weekend, too!

Five on Friday 1/7

Happy Friday from snowy, COLD Michigan!  We woke up to a windchill of -26 degrees yesterday morning, brrr.  Schools have been closed for days and we have over a foot of snow - exactly why I despise January.  I hope you had a good week and that it's a tad warmer wherever you are!

Onto a few things I've been loving this week...

These Apple Peanut Butter Delights from The Pioneer Woman have been our snack of choice lately.  I mean to snap a picture each time I make them but then all of a sudden they're all gone - that's how good they are.

Do any of you follow Mix & Match Mama, Shay Shull (aka Bachelor Sean Lowe's sister)?  Her and her family are in China right now adopting their new daughter, Ashby.  She's been live blogging their adventure - it's an amazing and heartwarming read.  Follow along through her blog or Instagram.

The return of some of my favorite TV shows this week has been a highlight!  The Good Wife, Bachelor, Pretty Little Liars and especially, Parenthood - I can't even handle that there are only three episodes left.  Check out this article to find out when your favorite TV shows will be back on in 2015!

To get my mind off of the Antarctic temperatures outside, I've started to plan our annual spring break trip to Florida.  Florida friends, I need your help!  We've almost always gone to Naples as my grandparents used to live on Barefoot Beach but I'm thinking of mixing things up this year.  What's another great beach we should visit?  We also love Destin but the weather has been hit or miss the last couple of times we were there in the spring.  I'm looking for a beach similar to Ka'anapali Beach in Maui, that place spoiled us.  Taking any and all suggestions!

Florida 2014

And finally, after talking about eyelashes on Wednesday, I tried my first eyelash primer this week.  BLOWN AWAY.  I used Clinique's Lash Building Primer and the stuff is insane.  I couldn't get over how amazing my lashes looked from a coat of this and then one coat of my mascara.  I had no idea what I was missing!  Have any of you tried this goodness?

Have a wonderful weekend and STAY WARM!
