The Rug Dilemma

After a couple months of house updates being stalled due to getting Brady and then the holidays, it feels good to get things going again.  We've painted, we've bought furniture, bedding and accessories, we've even attempted DIYs.  Basically, we've been busy.  I think we've done more in the last two weeks than in the last two months!

Today I was planning on sharing the entryway and our bedroom but I'm SO close to being done with both of those rooms that I'm going to hold off until I can do a "grand reveal".  I know, I suck.  Coming soon, though I promise!

The fireplace room is another area that is almost there but I need your help.  I'm stuck on the rug/coffee table situation.  Here's where we're at right now...

couch // pillows (exact sold out - similar) // mirror

I'm really happy with how it's coming together!  But I am ready to say goodbye to the dark coffee table (it shows every piece of dust and dog hair) and the rug (need a bigger one).  I also majorly need curtains - in every room of my house but that's another story.

So, here are the two rugs I'm debating between:

ONE | Jute + Cowhide
I'm obsessed with the layered look but is it too much for the space?  This Maui Jute rug is on sale for a killer price right now - hence the reason I need help so I can make a quick decision!  I'd just be on the hunt for a reasonably priced cowhide...

TWO | Jute Chenille Herringbone
Again with the jute but I love the pattern on this rug.  It's subtle and I think the colors would match perfectly with everything I already have.

I'm also torn between doing an ottoman or a traditional coffee table.  Too many choices.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on what you think would look best because I could seriously go any way!

And finally, I want to share my January goals to get done around the house.  I'm nothing if not a list person so this will be great in holding me accountable.  That way I can finish the entryway and bedroom and share them with all of you ;)

+ Paint master bathroom
+ Spray paint all of the gold door knobs in the house
+ New pillows and down comforter for our bed
+ Research dressers on Craigslist
+ Choose and order a rug and light fixture for the entryway
+ Research light fixtures for upstairs hallway
+ Figure out what we want to do in living room for built ins

Thanks for following along on my house decorating adventure.  You guys have really helped me in previous posts - ie. not going with white bedding - and I can't wait to hear what you have to say about the rug situation!

  1. Looking good; can't wait to see more! I am hating our dark coffee table these days too! I like the herringbone rug the best, and would go for coffee table over ottoman... Especially if you are considering kids anytime in the near future. Ottomans are just not as practical.

  2. I agree about the ottoman not being practical with kids. We have a coffee table from ikea and love it. We can add baskets for toys and such when babies come.

As for rugs, I love the one on the right. You probably want a rug that can take dog presents and spills out anyway, so whichever one is more durable.

I am loving what you are doing so far with the house. Makes my antsy pants less antsy to get a house.

  3. Every time you show updates of your house I get more and more jealous of how great it looks! Honestly, I love that cowhide rug but it probably isn't the most durable. But you seriously can't beat that price... tough decision!!

  5. My favorite is the second rug but I think both would look good! Hard decision.. good luck!

  6. The table on the right would bring in the fireplace elements and I like that - but both are really great!! I also like the west elm run - can't wait to see it all come together girl!! xo, Biana - BlovedBoston

  7. I think either jute rug would look great! Not sure about the layered look - it could be great, or may end up looking a bit bulky. I'll be excited to see what you choose! A boldly patterned curtain (maybe to match your pillows) would really add some visual interest around the windows. And have you considered just painting your current coffee table? Chalk paint is super easy to use (don't have to prime or sand or anything!) And you could go with a neutral color:)

  8. I love both rugs! The only thing with jute is that it can shed/tear. Animals can be rough on it. We have one and it was hurting about two weeks in :( You could go with just a giant hide rug and it would look so fun!

  9. Love option 2! And I couldn't agree more about the coffee table, we have a dark one as well and all of Roxy's fur stares us in the face on it :-P

  10. The fireplace room is coming along great! My vote would be for the second rug option and to stick with a coffee table but in a lighter color. If you really want an ottoman, I would go with two smaller square ottomans that have storage in them. Those also double as additional seating when you need it!

  11. I like the rug on the right!

I need a coffee table. I'd either go with a lighter color or one that's a large storage ottoman - the storage is invaluable and we put a tray on top of ours. Perfect!

  12. I really like the rug to the right. I also think that you could do something with a pop of color if you wanted as well!
I have an ottoman style "table" that I got on Overstock and get a ton of compliments on, and you could even do a big one that is an ottoman, but the top can flip over and be a table top like this (but not read obviously: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Abbyson-Living-Vincent-Red-Leather-Square-Ottoman-with-4-Trays/9617868/product.html?refccid=JIHPDYRIFH53E7KMN3YK2XMFUI&searchidx=33
    Good luck!! :)

  13. Everything is looking great! Can't wait to see the entrance and your room. I say the second rug - you can't beat Rugs USA's prices! I just bought one too - I couldn't resist!

  14. i definitely vote for the second one - i think the first one is a bit too much but if its your style, go for it!
i was really torn about the ottoman / coffee table as well, so i am combining them. i bought a coffee table and i am going to turn the top into an ottoman, but we can still store stuff underneath on that shelf and also a tray on top can hold drinks or flowers or whatever. best of both worlds!
can't wait to see the updates you've made to the house! i am so jealous and wish we had some updates to share, lol.
as for built ins in the living room... i really wanted to do the faux built ins with the ikea billy bookcases - have you seen those around on the web? it wouldnt work in our living room but i am holding out hope for the next house, lol.

  15. Ahhh the rug is a tough one -- loving both! I am loving the cowhide rugs so much, but that second option is amazing too! (so basically I'm no help...) Can't wait to see what you choose!

  16. I love the way your fireplace room is coming together! Both rugs are so gorgeous... but I especially love the coffee table on the right!

  17. I love the jute herringbone rug!! I think it might work better too since it's larger and can cover more space = make the room look bigger. Also, some thoughts on an ottoman/coffee table. We have an ottoman and it is so much more comfy to sit on the couch and put your feet up. But we don't have enough hard space to sit drinks and the like, so my husband likes to stick them in between the couch cushions. I kid you not. We've had our fair share of spills. So, I do love having an ottoman, but make sure you have enough room to add side tables or trays to set drinks and things on. That's just my two cents! It looks great so far! Can't wait to see what you choose!

  18. I love both rugs, I am no help here haha. I vote coffee table. We have an ottoman and even with a tray on it or something, you kick your feet up and stuff moves and gets knocked over. (Not sure if that makes sense) Coffee tables are just more sturdy, especially when you have wild puppy tails ;)

  19. I LOVE the first one, so chic and fun!!!!!

  20. I love herringbone, so I vote for that rug! We have a coffee table that is JUST like that one in your picture on the right. It's from Arhaus Furniture. I prefer a coffee table because I prefer putting a drink on a hard surface. We also found a nice big rug from Home Decorators. Hope that helps a little bit, I'm not very good with this stuff haha.

  21. I think you should definitely go with an ottoman in this room. It is the perfect size, and I love having an ottoman instead of a coffee table. We just have two small garden stools on either side of our sofa to sit drinks (see my home tour- great room). On the rug- I would say keep it simple and go with the second one :). Hope that helps!

  22. LOVE both options. I personally would probably go with the jute rug alone, just for clean lines and ease of cleaning it. :) Both options are swoon worthy though. Loving how everything is coming together!

  23. I love how the room looks so far- your floors are so gorgeous! I like the second rug a little bit better, but I think the cowhide option could work too!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think because you have the fireplace right there, it'll be a little cramped for the cowhide. In the picture above, the living room is totally open to the other room with no "stopping" point. Know what I mean? Go for the big rug. I'd also look for cool, new ideas for a coffee table. Houzz, Pinterest (duh) or HGTV.com. I'm LOVING Fixer Upper :)

  25. I like the 2nd rug... mainly because my OCD side couldn't handle all the curves in the first one... I need symmetry.. I like your current rug a lot :) That's actually my favorite :) haha

  26. The fireplace area looks awesome to me and very cozy! I need a new rug and coffee table now due to a teething puppy. I'm going to wait until she's 100% trained tho.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Both rugs look good, so no help there however I kinda like the big ottoman idea but then it could be a place for your dog to lay and you'll need a good cover. At least with the coffee table they won't necessarily see it as a soft spot to lay.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I LOVE the cowhide look! And please keep me posted if you do come across a reasonably priced one! :) Everything is looking great...love all of the progress!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I vote the 2nd rug! I like the cowhide too but maybe on its own. Can't wait to see the grand reveal... Oh and I think a new coffee table over an ottoman because it's just easier to put drinks/plates on and decorate!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I always, always vote jute (including for our house), but honestly with the suede and exposed brick I think the cowhide would look killer - and totally compliment - what you have in place!

  31. I worked in a rug store all through college (file that under things you'd never need to know about me). If you have a puppy, I don't recommend the hide. They're so easy to ruin and almost impossible to clean. Just my two cents!

  32. I love the harringbone rug!! Both would look awesome tho. Great room!

  33. I vote the second rug! I love the cowhide one, but the second one will goes with anything and everything just in case you decide to redecorate in the future. I personally like coffee tables over ottomans because they are super functional and are perfect when you have people over. Happy decorating!! I cannot wait to see the big reveal!

  34. I vote for the second rug - it would bring great texture into your space. Ever thought of a round ottoman for the space? It might be great for the flow of the room and if it was large enough it could be functional as a table and comfy to put your feet up on :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I vote second rug, too... and a big ottoman with a gold tray sitting on it... will pull from the gold in your mirror!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice, but I love the jute rug with cowhide layer :) That's just my opinion! I also would recommend some type of ottoman with a tray for your coffee table. I think it will look best plus be the most practical for any future babies you might have crawling and walking around there (hehe) !!

  37. I love the second rug to my right. It just makes the room look more warm and inviting. Loving this.

  38. I love the Herringbone rug! And I completely agree about the dark coffee table. Ours is dark and never looks clean! I love the looks of ottomans and if you are going for practically, you could look for one with some storage in it.

  39. i love that west elm rug - we're look for one too! and i LOVE the color gray you chose!
