How To Get More Blog Comments

Some of my favorite types of posts to read are the ones that help me become a better blogger.  You know, the posts like 'what I wish I knew when I started blogging' or 'how to increase your social media traffic'.  I'm always looking to learn and improve my blog and I'm sure you are, too!  So today, I wanted to talk about comments - specifically, how to get more of them.  Because if there is one thing us bloggers live for, it's comments, right?

Here are a few really easy, proven ways to increase the number of comments on your blog.

Make Commenting Easier
TURN OFF CAPTCHA!  I will rarely comment on a blog that has it turned on because 99% of the time, I can't read those little squiggly numbers and letters.  It's such a pain and ain't nobody got time for that.  Most people turn it on because of spam comments but instead of making your readers jump through hoops, just approve your comments before publishing or switch to Disqus.

Now, you may not know you have captcha turned on (this happened to me once and I'm still sorry!) so check out this tutorial to make sure it's not/how to turn it off.

Linkups
But don't just add your link and disappear - make sure to mingle!  I try and comment on five new blogs for every linkup I join or at the very least, comment on the hosts blog.  If you need any suggestions on linkups to join, I'd love to share some of my favorites with you.

Leave Comments
You get what you put out there is true even in blogging.  Anytime someone new leaves a comment on my blog, I always go and visit their blog and comment back.  Blogging is all about community and I've made so many friends that have become regular readers just through commenting back and forth.

Ask A Question
I've found that when ending my post with a question (related to the post, of course), I always get more comments.  It makes it easy for readers to chime in and participate in your blog.  This is a bonus for the writer, too - I can't tell you how many times you guys have helped me out with your answers and suggestions, especially with home related things!

Reply To Comments
People are taking precious time out of their day to leave you a thoughtful response, so it's the polite thing to do to respond.  I know sometimes we're swamped and can't reply to everything and that's okay - but if a blogger is consistently not responding to my comments, I usually stop leaving them.  Even just a quick 'thank you' will do!

Make sure you aren't a 'no reply blogger' - if you are, no one can respond to your comments.  I get anywhere from 5-10 commenters each day that I can't reply to and that makes me sad.  Follow this super easy tutorial to fix that real quick!

But remember, no blogger is perfect and even someone who is trying their hardest can't be doing all of these things, everyday.  It's important to give other bloggers (and ourselves!) grace and to make sure blogging isn't all about the numbers and who has the most page views and comments, etc. - it should be about having fun!

So, what do you think?  What's your best trick to getting your readers commenting?

  2. Such great tips!! Interacting is definitely super important! I wish I had time to do it more often. And asking a question is definitely smart! Great post girl!!

  4. Great tips gurlie! I couldn't agree with you more on how annoying the captcha is, but unfortunately I think a lot of people don't even realize theirs is on :-P

  6. Great Tips... I believe that Interaction is a big component of having comments on your blog.

  7. Love ALL of these tips! And agree with each one. Especially the responding to comments one. Although I can't always respond to comments in the timeliest manner, I do try to always do it so that my readers know I care about their input. That's important! I've stopped following blogs when their writers never take the time to respond back/answer questions, etc. That's just rude!

As a side note: what do you do about comments that come in with that "no-reply" email. I hate that because I can't figure out how to respond to those!

  8. These are great tips, and all definitely so true! I am loving this series about blogging you are doing, keep these posts coming!

  10. Great tips!! I'm going to check out that tutorial for the no-reply blogger thing. I need to fix that!! I also want to try and figure out a way to respond to comments via email instead of directly on the post. Thank you so much for sharing this, and I hope that you are having a good day so far!

  11. great tips! when i first started blogging, i would open up every.single.post. in a link up and it seriously got way too time consuming, however i did find the majority of blogs i now read every day, so it is a great idea! now, i basically only link up with people i consider my 'blogging friends' and so i'm going to comment on their post anyway, you know? i rarely do random link ups anymore. i also totally agree with you get in what you put out - in life, and blogging.

  12. These are great tips, and the ones I see most often about getting comments on your blog. The worst is when people have a CAPTCHA. Just, no! Thanks so much for posting and offering your fine wisdom :).

  14. Great tips... those captcha things are so hard to read! I'm even hating those "I'm not a robot" boxes that tend to turn into captchas every once in a while, too.

  15. Great tips! I'm pretty sure we found each other through a link-up, right?

  19. Love these tips! Making sure you're not a no-reply blogger is huge, I always get so sad when someone asks something and I can't reply because I can't find their email!

  20. totally with you on the "prove you're not a robot one" - i can't read them half the time too!

  21. Love all of these! Captcha drives me crazy. And the no-reply blogging comments are always so much harder to respond to because you can't do it through email! Thanks for sharing, Katie!

  22. All such great tips girl! I think trying to stumble on new blogs to you during linkups is such a great way! I have found some amazing new blogs by hanging around and checking out all the links!

  23. It makes me sad when I can't reply too, I hate it!

  24. I hate when people are "No reply" bloggers... I have one person who comments every day & doesn't even have a profile page... I have so much to say to this person!!!

  25. ALL excellent points. And I love that pic! Is that yours? Nice, girl!

  26. Great tips! I agree with all of them. Leaving comments on other blogs is huge. You've got to give a little love to get a little love. I also love when bloggers ask questions. It makes it easy to join the conversation and I've notived more engagement on my blog when I ask questions. One goal I've made this year is to join a link-up. I see them all the time, but never participate and I know they're a great way to meet new people and grow your community. Thanks for sharing!

  27. Thanks for the tips! It seems to be working ;) I'd love to get some other linkups from you for days throughout the week. I always do the Five on Friday ones with Christina, April, Natasha and Darci. That is a great linkup and you get to meet tons of other bloggers, but I'd like to incorporate other linkups throughout the week. Thanks!

  32. Great advice!! I also am less likely to leave a comment if I have to fill out multiple lines (email, name, blog, etc) just to leave a comment lol It makes me sad when others are no reply bloggers too - I always try to respond & then notice it says no reply on it. Thanks for sharing these tips!

  33. Great tips… I've actually been working on a 'what I wish I knew when I started blogging' post!! I have to say, I've been guilty of just linking up and reading my daily reads lately. Hopefully next rotation I can start exploring again!!

  34. Wonderful advice and tips! I had no idea that I had CAPTCHA turned on. Thank you again! Xo, Stephanie

  35. Excellent tips! I do most of these tips and it has definitely paid off. Linkups have helped to grow my blog a lot, so I always take the time to comment on others who've joined the linkups. Also, I make sure to return the favor. Same with you, I do skip those who do not give the same amount of time as I've done to leave comments on their blogs. I think it's defeat the purpose of the whole act of commenting in the first place - it's supposed to be a discussion, not a one-way communication :)

I'm also starting a Blogger 101 series on my blog this year, covering various topics related to blogging. I'd love for you to check them out :)

  36. Truth to all of this! And I'm so glad someone told me to turn off the damn captcha because I hate it, also. You can bet I don't keep visiting and commenting when someone never responds either. What a lonely way to blog!

  37. 100% yes on this! People aren't just going to find your blog, you have to "go out there" and do some work to have your blog be seen, whether that's advertising or just leaving comments. Again, great job on this post!
