Home Progress + Goals

I'm nothing if not a 'to do list motivated' person so I should have known all along that setting monthly house goals would be just the kick in the butt I needed to really get stuff done.  In January, I came up with a few simple projects that I wanted to work on and would you believe it, I finished almost all of them!  A quick recap...

+ Spray paint all of the gold doorknobs in our house: DONE
And what a difference this simple project has made!  Just check out these before and after pictures... pretty great, right?  We used this tutorial and when I say we, I mean Nick but he promises that it was super easy.  Yes, that's Brady having his weekly stare down with the vacuum :)

+ New pillows and down comforter for our bed: HALF DONE
I did pick up a new down comforter from Marshall's but haven't purchased any pillows yet.  There are just so many fun patterns and designs that I'm having a hard time making a decision on what I want!

+ Research Craigslist dressers: FAIL
Didn't do this at all.  We need a dresser for our bedroom and for the TV in the fireplace room and I think it would be more fun to salvage an old one than shell out the big bucks for two new ones.

+ Paint master bathroom: DONE
We went with Benjamin Moore's Soft Chamois and to be honest, I like it but I don't love it.  It has a bit of a green undertone that didn't show up in the sample but definitely shows up now that the entire room is painted.  It's not that bad and I can live with it (aka don't feel like repainting) so it's going to stay this color until we do a full bathroom renovation one day.  The rest of the room is currently still a work in progress.

+ Choose and order a light fixture and rug for our entryway: HALF DONE
We did get a new light fixture and it is gorgeous!  I'm in love.  We went with this one from Shades of Light and it's perfect for our low, 8 foot ceilings.  The rug I also picked out but chose not to order after witnessing how crazy Brady is with the new West Elm rug.

+ Research light fixtures for upstairs hallway: HALF DONE
I found the ones we are going to get - these flush mounts from Wayfair - which is half the battle!  But I didn't order them yet because I'm waiting for them to go on sale.

+ Figure out what we want to do for built ins in the living room: FAIL
I didn't do this because I don't really want to think about it.  What I really want to do is hire someone to build them for us but that cost the big bucks.  And the other option is DIY and I just don't totally trust our skills.  Remember the wainscoting we put up in the dining room?  I never mentioned that for a reason...

So while not quite everything was completed, I'm still really happy with our progress!  We're this much closer to having quite a few rooms 'finished' and I can't wait to share them with you guys.  In order to keep this momentum going, here are a few of my goals for the short month of February:

+ Paint slider door white
+ Research doorbell covers (as pictured above in entry, yuck)
+ Purchase a dining room table
+ Complete the half bath (getting ambitious!)
+ Order master bathroom rugs and mirror
+ Complete bedding purchases
+ Research Craigslist dressers

Wish me luck!  Are you currently doing any work on your home?

  6. You all got so much accomplished!! I promise your pup will get over your rugs soon. Our dog had a huge problem with our jute rug when she was a puppy but got over it as she got older. The first year it just really tough and hard to trust them! So I really want built-ins in our living room but like you said $$$ have you looked into the Ikea hemnes shelves? They have a bunch of different options you can put together to make them look like built-ins. It's not ideal but it might be a good fix while you save money for real ones! Love that you painted the door knobs- genius idea!

  7. Look at you go girl! I can't get over the transformation of your entryway with the new color on the doorknobs, what an amazing idea. And I agree, it'll be far cheaper and more rewarding to salvage an older dresser than to buy new ones. Can't wait to see how you transform them :)

  12. Dang, you accomplished a lot! Reading this post reminds me of everything we need to do since we just bought a house and move in two weeks... I might steal some of these listing ideas so that I can remember everything and get it all done! Homes are just so much work. Good and fun work, but work.

  14. I LOVE your hallway light - I may have to check that one out since its exactly what I've been looking for since we also have low ceilings. I'm sure you'll decide what to do about the built ins eventually - sometimes you just have to live in a room for a bit before deciding that's exactly what you want to do! The house is looking great - looking forward to more room reveals!

  21. I am so impressed with how much you guys have done! I need to (make Josh) follow that tutorial and do all of our door knobs. Did you do the hinges too?

  22. I need a new dresser & desk for my office/knit room... I'm scared to try Craig's list... I'm the one who fears someone is going to kill me if I buy from them. #ihaveissues

  24. I painted our kitchen this past November and I am not thrilled with the color either.. it is SO hard to pick out paint colors. I probably bought 10 different samples and painted swatches all over the room before painting and the color I ended up with is way too light. Oh well, maybe one day I'll get the ambition to re-do it. I think I am going to re-paint my door knobs now after looking at your photos, it makes the house look amazing! Sidenote: I tried two of your recipes (chicken pot pie and stuffed peppers) from your popular page recently and they came out great! My fiancé was thrilled with both!

  25. Spray painting those handles made SUCH a difference! Wow!

  26. Love the painted doorhandles! That is going to the very top of my list.

  27. I have the same tutorial saved for our doorknobs! Did you do hinges as well or just replace them? We are going to brave that project this spring!

  28. Wow, I NEVER thought of spray painting door knobs!! I remember we moved into our last house and everything was gold, so we went out and bought new fixtures... apparently that's a waste of money haha! You'll have to let us know how they hold up!

  31. I'm not sure how great your resale or antique malls are, but I found one of our dressers there instead of on Craigslist. I love it because it has more character than most furniture stores and it was much less expensive.

  35. You were busy!! Those doorknobs look great. It's amazing how something so small can make such a big difference. All of our interior doors are old, so I'm hoping to give them all a fresh coat of paint this month. I know it will look so much better. I laughed about the rug. I rolled up our living room rug and put it in the basement until our dog was out of that phase. They grow out of it eventually!

  36. Everything you've done so far looks really sleek- I love it! Can't wait to see more progress pics.

    xo Always, Abby

  37. hahaha why do all dogs hate the vacuum? Crazy! And I love the paint job in your bathroom :) I wish I could do something to our house. But its a rent house :(

  38. I cannot believe how good the spray paint on those knobs turned out! What did you use? Some idiotspainted all the original knobs in my 1916 house to the same color as the door and I hate it and want to paint them or strip them. Painting seems easier at this point.

  39. Thanks for linking up with Penny & I! The door handles look great and I love that light fixture!

Have you updated any light fixtures with this method? I am wondering if it would work?? Well I need to get busy and decide on the perfect paint color. Thanks for the reminder about this easy project
