The Best Blogging Advice I've Ever Gotten

One of my favorite parts about blogging is also the part I struggle with the most: comments.  I love them, I live for them, and appreciate every single one of them.  But, I'm SO terrible at letting the email notifications of them pile up in my inbox and getting beyond overwhelming.  Until one day, I came across a random blogging article somewhere on Pinterest (I can't even find it anymore, it was so long ago) that changed everything for me.  So here it is:

Touch it once.

This phrase can have a whole lot of different meanings behind it, but for me it means touching every email only one time.  What I was doing in the past was opening up an email, reading it, closing it, organizing it into the proper folder 'comments' or 'sponsors', and then marking it as unread so I would remember to come back to it later.

So. Dumb.

That was such a waste of time!  All that I really needed to be doing was touching each email once, and then acting on it.  So as soon as I open the email, I'm going to respond to it.  And if I don't have the time to respond to it that second, I don't open it and leave it for when I do.

It's really hard for me to not be distracted by the emails rolling in while I'm doing other blog related things, so it's helpful to just keep my email closed while I'm researching, writing posts, or editing pictures.  I'm so much more productive that way, and things get accomplished MUCH quicker.  Now I will only keep my email open when I have time to act on the messages coming in.

Nothing seriously groundbreaking here, but you wouldn't believe how much it has helped me.  Gone are the days of an inbox filled with 200+ emails to respond to (traumatizing for a slightly OCD person like myself, ha), so I just had to share in case any of you are in the same boat!

What's the best piece of blogging advice you've ever gotten?

  1. You are so good about responding to your emails! I try to stay on top of it, but it doesn't always happen. I like to think my communicating in other ways (especially commenting myself) makes up for it!

  2. I feel like I need to practice this in all my emails - I don't know why I feel like it's better to have a zero inbox if I haven't taken care of the me carry responses! Thanks for the idea!!!

  3. Such a smart idea. I don't know how many times I've read something and knew I didn't have time to respond and then forgotten about it later.

  4. Still being a new blogger I can’t speak much about this but the best advice I’ve gotten is to write your readers back. when there's a personal connection and effort made they’re more likely yo come back and keep reading.

  5. Such awesome advice! I need to do the same thing with text messages, because I'll open them and mean to respond and then totally forget! And girl you've always been awesome at responding to our comments ;-)

  6. I have definitely let the comments pile up. Last week I said you know what, I'm going to do a better job of responding to comments. I changed my settings in Blogger, so you are probably not getting an email notification from me whenever I comment. Feel free to email me and let me know though!! Anyways, fun post and thanks for sharing!! :-)

  7. I live by this advice!!! I heard this once too in regards to answering emails, or answering voicemails and it's always stuck. Even if I see a mess at home, I think to myself "touch it once" and take care of it then and there before I forget. Life changing!

  8. Great piece of advice, lady. Would you believe you are the first person I've heard it from? I'll have to keep that in mind moving forward.

  9. That is a great piece of advice - I definitely do that method with my emails!! I hate having a big number of unread emails in that inbox lol!! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  10. I follow the same method at work. If I don't respond right away, it eats at me for a long time.

  11. Ugh so true - I need to be better about responding faster too. Great advice!

  12. I'm the same way - when I open an email, I want to respond right then... & then HATE when you can't because they have a 'no-reply' email :( boo

  13. One of the best tips ever - and the most helpful!! x

  14. I read that exact advice somewhere recently!! I can't remember where but it held true with me too!! It's so hard these days with iPhones to just open it real quick, skim it and think you will respond to it later but never do. Your just doubling your work load by reading it twice anyway. Save it until you have some time to sit down and respond.

  15. That is such good advice!! I've gotten better at it, but I still struggle with, especially on a day where I'm trying to read my usual blogs and keep up with my own comments, half the time I respond to half and forget the rest because I do the whole looking at it more than once thing. Now I aim for answering as soon as they come in which has helped tremendously so I don't have this huge overwhelming number hanging there.

  16. Such a good tip -- I go either way on this. I normally read everything as they come through but I don't always put action on it right away, especially when I'm at work. Great advice for sure!

  19. That is some great advice. That takes care of procrastination and also just the extra time that adds up!

  20. Totally agree- I have to do this with all of my emails! I wish I responded to comments immediately, because they built up with all of my other emails then I get overwhelmed and don't respond to any of them! I'm a bad blogger over here! You are so good with it though!

  21. The best blogging advice I've ever been given or seen is that people may not comment all the time and you may make people mad with stuff you write but its YOUR blog, YOU write what YOU want to write. Not everyone's life is sunshine and flowers and blogging allows you to vent when you sometimes can't. Those who stick around for whatever you may write, who comment whether they want a reply back or not, are the people you know who support you through thick and thin.

I'm not going to lie, its hard to reply to everything but just do it as you can, when you can and that's the best you can do!

  22. This is great advice! I'm super OCD and can't handle emails in my inbox so I try to respond immediately. I'm trying to work on an editorial calendar because I have heard they are so helpful, I just can't get seem to get on track with it though.

  23. That is some good advice- piled up emails are not fun, but unfortunately I'm one of those OCD people that cannot have the little red notification of unread emails... it drives me crazy!!! I always look to see if they're a no-reply blogger first- if I have time and want to be nice, I'll send them an email with directions on how to fix it and if not, I'll just delete it.

  24. YES!!!! Great advice for blogging, but for life too! I need to implement this into my life ASAP! The best blogging advice I have ever gotten is to be real and honest. People connect with YOU and want to hear your voice come through your writing!

  25. Hmmmmm I think the best piece of advice I've ever gotten is just be real. When people are trying to be someone they are not or fit into a mold that their blog doesn't really work with it's obvious. I am a lifestyle blog with fashion and fitness. Occasionally I can talk about recipes or interior design but lets be honest....that is not my forte!

  26. This is really great advice. I am trying to grow my blog, saving to get some revamping done so the layout is more me. I love how YOU really come through in what you write, your photos! Thanks for sharing your wisdom! :)

  27. That's such good advice! I am SO bad about reading comments right when they come in and then marking them as unread so I can respond to them later. I try to get back to them within 2-3 days, though it easily hits a week or 10 days sometimes. This is such good advice! I'm not sure if I'll have the self control to wait to read the messages until I have time to respond, though! Ha!

  28. Aah... and just touching it, period haha. Not letting it linger and consume you, anxiety-wise (as I know we've talked about before). Anything to help - cheers!

  29. This is such an easier way to manage emails. I do the same thing with my text messages - I can't tell you the amount of times I get a text a week or so later saying they forgot to text back. Guess my OCD has lead me to the "touch it once" philosophy

    ReplyDelete
  30. Such great advice! I'm bad about it too. Then I'll wake up in the middle of the night and remember all the pile up in my inbox. This is actually great advice for work, cleaning, basically anything!

    ReplyDelete
  31. hahaha i have like 200+ emails in my inbox right now. i normally ignore them until i can actually respond, so i'm not touching them more than once, so that is good advice. i normally don't let them pile up this much though. when they pile up this much i try and just respond to like 5 every half hour or so while working. if i 'read' something and don't respond immediately, there is a 100% chance i will forget about it, so i really try not to do that. thanks for sharing girl!

  32. Great advice, lady! I definitely need to take a page out of your book on this one.

  33. I completely agree and need to remind myself of this more often! Xo, Stephanie

  34. I'm the WORST at this! I just responded to comments that were weeks old. Yikes! I think it's so important to respond, though!
