Pup-cakes Recipe

I was cleaning through and organizing the photos on my phone the other night (which is another post in itself, blah) and came across the pictures from Brady's first birthday... which then made me realize I never shared the recipe for the pupcakes I made him!

These are super easy, much cheaper than a fancy little cake from a bakery, and quite tasty - Brady had two of them and then I ate the rest as muffins ;)  He LOVED them and actually swallowed each of them whole.  Although he does this with lots of things, socks included haha.  The pupcakes were also really gentle on his stomach and didn't bother him at all, which was my biggest worry.  Definitely doggy approved!

Ingredients
1 egg
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup applesauce
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup honey
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
Dash of cinnamon

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease a cupcake tray with cooking spray.

Combine egg, peanut butter, applesauce, vanilla and honey in a large bowl and mix well.  Stir in the carrots.

Sift together the flour and baking soda.  Fold into the carrot mixture.  Spoon batter into cupcake tray.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.  Cool in pan for 10 minutes, and then move to wire rack to cool completely.

Once cool, apply 'frosting': a mixture of peanut butter and honey.  Top with a Milkbone and serve to happy pup!

The Scents of Fall

One of my very favorite things about fall may be the candles.  I think the scents of autumn are the best of the best - pumpkin, vanilla, cinnamon, apple, nutmeg, cedarwood.  Mmmm.  If you know me, you know that I love candles and while I'm a candle feign all year, this time of year especially.  I patiently waited for the first day of fall (aka counted down the days) and now that we're here, my candles are burning around the clock.

Here are a few of my favorites and a few I can't wait to try...

ONE | Tipsy Pumpkin Ale: Notes of pumpkin, spices and a hint of vanilla.
TWO | Nest Pumpkin Chai: A blend of wild pumpkin, spicy Masala chai, cardamom, ginger and cinnamon.
THREE | Diptyque Ambre: Warm, woody and leathery, with patchouli and mysterious incense.
FOUR | Bath & Body Works Pumpkin Cupcake: Freshly baked pumpkin cupcake covered in buttercream frosting.
FIVE | Blithe and Bonny Spice: Made from a proprietary blend of soy and beeswax, flavored with spices.
SIX | Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir: Blend of pomegranate, raspberry, patchouli and frankincense.
SEVEN | Volupsa Japonica Goji Tarocco Orange: Goji berry, ripe mango and tarocco orange.
EIGHT | Bath & Body Works Leaves: Fall foliage with a mixture of golden nectar, red apple and spiced berry.
NINE | Volupsa Crisp Champagne: Sparkling brut champagne mingles with hints of vanilla and barrel oak.
TEN |  Himalayan Trading Post Tree Bark: Cinnamon, clove, herbaceous pine, amber and balsam.

Seriously amazing.  What's your favorite fall candle?  I'm always looking for new ones!

Weekend Happenings

Happy Monday!

Our weekend was pretty nonstop (hence the afternoon post), but it was a good nonstop.  The weather was beautiful - we've been experiencing an Indian summer with temps in the 80's, which is pretty warm for Michigan this time of year.  Today is probably our last day of it though, but that's okay because then I get to break out all of my fall clothes ;)

Speaking of fall clothes... I wore my new sweater + skirt combo on Friday night... and didn't even get an acceptable picture!  Blogger fail.  We kicked off the weekend by going out to dinner where I had the most fabulous salmon with Korean BBQ sauce and mango salsa that I can't wait to attempt to replicate, and I tried my first ever pumpkin beer!  I'm not a huge beer lover but the Brooklyn Post Road Pumpkin Ale was pretty delish.

After dinner, we headed over to the theatre in town to see Chicago's improv comedy troup, Second City.  We saw them a few times when we lived in the city and they didn't disappoint on Friday either.  It was pretty hilarious and if the Fully Loaded tour is coming to your town, I definitely recommend seeing it!

A little snapchat action (@kavanderploeg)

On Saturday morning, something came over me.  I don't know what it was or who might of influenced it, but I woke up and actually thought it would be FUN to go running.  So strange, so very unlike me.  We downloaded a couch to 5k app, threw on our shoes, leashed Brady up and off we went before I could change my mind.  We ran/walked for 30 minutes and like, I actually enjoyed it.  Very weird, but it's probably a good idea to have a healthy hobby considering how much I love my desserts, ha.

My family came into visit that afternoon and we had lunch and then another first happened: we went golfing!  We went to a par 3 course and I actually played 11 holes of golf.  Things were pretty rough at first, but slowly improved throughout the day.  As in, I didn't whiff the ball 10 times before actually making contact ;)  I have a llllooonnnngggg way to go in terms of getting better, but I'm excited to play again!  Another healthy hobby!

tee // jeans // shoes

Sunday was a busy just full of errands.  We went to church for the first time in months, powered-washed our house, took Brady to the dog park, we both got new tennis shoes, and we tried out a new (to us) local brewery where I tried another pumpkin ale - Brooklyn was better though.  What are your favorite pumpkin beers?

Oh, and the cider mill!  I didn't realize they closed at 6pm and we rolled in there at 5:55pm so needless to say apple picking is to be rescheduled.  But we did manage to grab the good stuff - apple cider and donuts. We ended the weekend on the couch, eating donuts and bosco sticks (remember those?! thank goodness we 'run' now ;)), watching football and checking out the blood moon which we had the perfect view for!

And Brady had the comfiest seat on the couch, of course.  Hope you all had a great weekend, too!

It's Friday!

Follow my 'Fall' themed Pinterest board here!

I thought this picture seemed only appropriate since visiting the cider mill is on our weekend agenda :)  Also coming up?  Seeing Chicago's Second City comedy troupe that is in town for the night, golfing and dinner with my family tomorrow, finally going back to church since like May (so bad) and lots of football watching.  A pretty perfect fall weekend!

But first, some highlights from the week...

+ Thank you ALL so much for joining Pinky and I's 'falling for fall' link up!  I read every single post and I loved them all.  Everything plaid, pumpkin and (basic) just makes me so happy.  The link up was a huge success and I hope this can be a yearly thing, what do you think Pinky?!

+ You may have seen on Instagram, but we woke up to a little flood in our basement on Wednesday morning.  A pipe from the sink in our bathroom on the main floor had come undone sometime in the night and was shooting water allll over our bathroom, which was then draining through the floor vent down into our basement.  Luckily we don't have a lot of valuable stuff in the basement so nothing important was damaged except tons of boxes that we needed to clean out anyways.  We were able to get all of the water out of the bathroom and the basement and it looks like everything is going to be okay thankfully.  It could have been SO much worse - imagine if this had happened over a weekend when we were out of town?!  We were lucky!

+ #obsessed with this cardigan/jacket thingy from Anthropologie.  It will be mine- next time a sale comes along ;)

+ I made Lisa's pumpkin bread recipe and it is delicious/dangerous/addicting.  Basically it's so good and you should try it this weekend.  Be sure to make the crumble for on top too because that might be the best part.  Oh, and I didn't make mini loaves, I used a 9x5 loaf pan and baked for 60 minutes on 350 degrees.

+ Did everyone stay up and watch TGIT last night?!  I'm so happy fall TV is back... right now I'm all about Nashville, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, Fear the Walking Dead, The Good Wife and I can't wait to check out Blood and Oil on Sunday.  Haha I may have a TV problem - that's a lot of shows.  What's your favorite?

Enjoy your weekends!  See you back here on Monday!

5 Pieces for Under $150 {What I Bought}

Am I the only one that wants to completely update my wardrobe with each and every new season?   I'm thinking probably not, I'm thinking it's probably a girl thing ;)  Unfortunately, that can get quite pricey so usually I'll stick to buying a couple nicer, more versatile pieces that I can mix and match paired with a few trendier, less expensive pieces.  Luckily you don't have to spend a lot to stay on trend thanks to stores like H&M and Forever 21!

When we were out of town this past Friday, Nick had to work so I was left to entertain myself for the day.  First stop: the mall, no surprise there!  Within minutes of walking into H&M, I wanted to take one of everything home, please and thank you.  Their new fall line is amazing!  I attempted to show some restraint and only purchased these five pieces, shared below - they're all very versatile, some might say basic, scream fall and the total came in under $150.  A great, inexpensive update to any wardrobe!

I'm having a love affair with this color right now and the rib knit pattern is so cozy.  I thought it ran a bit on the small side so I sized up to a 'small' - I like my sweaters looser/baggier though.  It comes in 4 different colors, too!

Plaid is here to stay, there's no doubt about that.  I love this print because it's really reminiscent of the infamous Zara blanket scarf.  The shirt is 100% cotton making it super soft and for this price, the teal checked version will most likely be mine next.

You guys.  I can't tell you how many ponchos I've tried on in the last couple of months in an attempt to find one that fits my short 5'3" frame.  They've all swallowed me up - except for this one finally! The color is prettier in person and it'll look so cute with a floppy hat (I have this one) or just literally anything.  I love it.

Faux Fur Vest
After missing out on the popular Topshop fur vest during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I was determined to find a cheaper alternative this fall.  Welp, thank you H&M for this dead ringer and for it being 1/3 the price.

Jacquard Weave Skirt
I feel like skirts are so 'in' right now and I love the pattern on this one.  I may or may not have plans to wear it this weekend with the rust red sweater ;)  I'm lusting over the beige striped version as well.

Pretty great, especially for the price right?  Only thing missing from the list is a fabulous pair of distressed jeans and booties and then you're totally on point for this season!  Fall fashion is the best!

Fall To-Do

Today is the day!  Our fall link up is here and I hope you'll join us.

To kick off this fresh, new season, I thought I would share my fall to-do's.  I'm nothing if not a list person (I weirdly love crossing things off of them) and after making one this past summer, I found that it really encouraged me to get out and do all of the fun summer things I love to do.  So, that's what we're doing again this fall!  These are all pretty quintessential autumn activities, but they're some of my favorites and I can't wait to get started on them.

+Cider Mill
This one is on our weekend agenda!  So excited for cider donuts - that's what it's all about.  The apples, cider are great and all... but give me the donuts.

+Football Games
We've got quite a few college home games coming up - including Homecoming that everyone will be visiting for - and I'd like to attend a local high school football game.

+Carve Pumpkins & Scary Movies
Last October 31st, we carved pumpkins, passed out candy, and watched The Silence of the Lambs.  That was the night before we brought Brady home :)  I want a repeat this year!

+Decorate Front Porch
With our pumpkins, lots of mums and whatever else cute crap I can find at Hobby Lobby ;)

+Nature Hikes
Mid October is when the leaves really begin to change here in Michigan.  We have so many nature trails near us so I really want to get out and take advantage of them to check out the pretty colors.

+Apple Cobbler & Pumpkin Bread
Two of my favorite fall treats!  I've made them both before, but I really want to perfect the recipes this year.

+Farmers Market
We went a whopping three times this entire summer since we were never home :(  I'd like to make up for that with lots of trips this fall.

+Guest Bathroom Updates
This isn't your typical fall activity, but we have one bathroom in our house that hasn't been touched at all.  It needs paint and a few updates and I'd love to get it done before Homecoming weekend.

What are you looking forward to most about fall?  Let me know and be sure to link up your fall themed posts below!  Happy Wednesday!

Wedding Season Finale

You guys.  This weekend was pretty epic.  It may be Tuesday but I'm still recovering and still wishing we could rewind time back to Saturday - so. much. fun.

Our wedding season finale, wedding #7, took place in Detroit and celebrated our best couple friends Dane and Tiffany.  Nick and Dane grew up together and then went to college together and were in the same fraternity, so I've known him for a long time as well and the 4 of us have gotten pretty close the last few years.  We have tons of mutual friends which was amounting to sending wedding season out with a bang.  It did not disappoint!

The festivities started on Thursday night with the rehearsal and dinner.  Everything was right on the Detroit River which was just gorgeous.  Prepare for picture overload with this post ;)

The happy couple!

Their nieces were running from table to table during the dinner giving out shoulder and neck massages.  Umm, yes please.  Most relaxing dinner ever!  The food was also delicious, we had fresh lake perch that I'm still dreaming about.

And little side note: since we were coming up on wedding event #8249 for this summer (or close to that), I was all out of dresses.  Which meant I had to do what I do best last week: shop!  I was able to find a couple of really great pieces to wear this weekend and this maxi dress from Shopbop was easily my favorite.  It's on final sale right now for a fabulous price - check it out here!

Now let's fast forward to Saturday because we didn't do much on Friday - Nick worked and then we went out to eat with his parents.  Nick was in the wedding so he was off pretty early Saturday morning for pictures.  I met up with a group of friends to grab brunch and then went to meet Barb & Kyle's (who just got married last weekend!) new 10 week old Bernese Mountain Dog.  ADORABLE.  Her name is Piccolina which means 'little girl' in Italian and she is just the sweetest thing ever.  Can't wait for Brady to meet his playmate soon!

After a hefty dose of puppy fever (just kidding, I have my hands full over here), we headed to downtown Detroit to check into the Renaissance Center Marriott and start getting ready for the night.  Check out these views from the 53rd floor!

After the s-l-o-w-e-s-t Uber ride of all time, we got to the ceremony with only a few minutes to spare.  We found seats, settled in and then had a MAJOR 'oh $@#%' moment.  One of our guy friends was going to be singing/playing the guitar for the first dance.  Since he was in the wedding, we were in charge of bringing the guitar to the ceremony.  Welllll, we left the guitar in the Uber and didn't realize it for about 20 minutes.  We were majorly panicking and it took what felt like forever to get our driver on the phone, but luckily she was able to bring the guitar back and all was well.  We didn't tell him or the happy couple until the next day ;)

Back to the ceremony - it went perfectly and before we knew it, we were on to cocktail hour with these fabulous views.  Let the photo shoots begin!

The rest of the night literally went perfect.  The food was delicious, speeches were sweet, photo booth was hilarious as always, and the band was seriously amazing.  They played all of our favorite songs and the night was one giant dance party.  It reminded me so much of our wedding with the same friends and the same songs, we like what we like ;)

Sunday morning was a rough one after a 4am bed time, but we rallied for brunch at Tiffany's parents and then picked up the pup and headed home.  Honestly, Monday was a rough one too - this picture of Brady summed up how we were feeling perfectly, ha!  But we couldn't be happier for these two and are so excited (and totally jealous) for their Hawaiian honeymoon coming up :)

Hope you all had fabulous weekends as well!

And just a reminder, TOMORROW is our fall link up!  Join P!nky and I to share absolutely anything you want about the upcoming season: clothing, decor, pumpkin recipes, bucket lists, you name it.  Can't wait to see all of your fall themed posts!!! :)
