Travel Thursday: 3 NYE Vacation Choices

I can't believe it's taken me so long to get back to this post!  Thank you to everyone who provided so much awesome advice and great suggestions on my last Travel Thursday post, all about cruising (see that here).

A little back story in case you missed that initial postI thought I'd completely plan three different NYE trips, present them to Nick and he could pick his favorite.  It just seems like a fun way to get him involved in planning (which he isn't really a fan of) and choosing what to do, but I still get to do all of the work.  Which, I must say, I like doing!  I think half of the fun in going on a vacation is the planning/anticipation of it.  It's just a fun way to spice things up a bit.

SO!  Finally our three vacation choices!  We still haven't decided on one yet, but considering we're only 50 days away from New Years Eve, we will be booking something soon.  Yay! :)

ONE | Cruise
Royal Caribbean has a couple options that would be perfect for us.  One is a 4 night Bahamas cruise that would leave from Port Canaveral and hit Coco Cay, Nassau and have one day at sea.  It leaves on New Years Eve so I was thinking we could fly down to Orlando maybe a day early and spend it at Disney or something - always trying to work Disney into any trip I can ;)  I think this might be our best option as it's been a LONG time since either of us cruised and starting with a shorter one might be better.

The other cruise option would be a 7 night Eastern Caribbean cruise leaving Port Canaveral and hitting Coco Cay, St. Thomas, St. Maarten and spending 3 days at sea.  I'm almost unsure if this would be a *bit* too long for us, with too many days at sea.  Just not sure.  It leaves the 27th and gets us home on Sunday the 3rd which would be great so we don't have to miss any work days.

TWO | California
One of my bucket list items is a Pacific Coast Highway road trip... what better time than New Years Eve?  We would start in San Francisco, spend a couple of nights, head down the coast with spending one night in Carmel or Big Sur, and then spend a couple of days in LA.  This trip surprisingly is coming out the cheapest right now which is a nice pro.  Nick has never been to California and I've only been to LA once so I'd love to explore the rest of the state.  The options are endless with everything we could do there.

THREE | Atlantis
I've wanted to go to Atlantis since the Mary Kate & Ashley movie, ha!  I mean what could be better than a few days of lounging in the sun, eating, exploring, relaxing?  Biggest con to this is the price.  I'm thinking Atlantis is going to be one of those places that charges you a lot to do everything.  Just the hotels rooms over NYE are quite pricey and flights into Nassau are much higher than flying anywhere in the US.  But then I look at the pictures of the water and I'm sold all over again.

Optional fourth spot | Charleston
Nick has mentioned Charleston for New Years a few times over the last month.  We LOVED it when we visited for our anniversary last year, but I can't help but feel like we should go somewhere new.  And is the weather super nice at the end of December?  I'm sure it would be gorgeous to see the city decked out for the holidays and there are so many restaurants we are dying to try there... I guess it could be a contender!

So what do you guys think?  I'm so torn, I want to do them all!  If you've been to any of these places or have any suggestions/recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

  2. Omgosh! I've always wanted to do Atlantis-one day! You will pick the right one! I'm so excited to see where you end up going! Love the California trip!!! Ahhhhhhh!

  3. These are all great! The only thing I would caution you about Atlantis (that my best friend told me when she went the other summer) is that it is VERY family friendly--she said she wouldn't go back unless she had kids. It's always busy since it's a stop for the cruise ships, so just lots of people all the time. If you don't mind that, then no biggie. Just wanted to warn you about what I'd heard.

  4. Ohhh-the Cali trip seems amazing! I want to go. I went in January a couple years ago and was surprised with how warm it was! Bonus for me! As for south Carolina-it might be chilly. But not frigid like the north.

  5. So many fun options! Personally I love the cruise since then you can just relax in the sun! Obviously I love CA since I'm from there, but it sounds like a lot of packing up and driving and you'd still have to figure out what to do for actual NYE. Plus the weather may be a little dreary along the coast this time of year, personally I'd save that for a spring or fall trip. No matter what you choose I'm sure you'll have a blast!

  7. I vote somewhere new! And you know how much I love cruising, you'll get the best bang for your buck and get to see several destinations in one trip. And don't be scared of the 7 night cruise, we always disembark at the end of our cruises wishing we still had more time because it went by way too fast! Can't wait to hear what you guys pick, and if you're in Orlando for an extra day or two we definitely have to meet up ;-)

  8. Ugh I want to go to all of these places! I love a good cruise though because most of the planning is done for you, you just have to show up and enjoy it! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

  9. Holiday in the Sun is one of my all time favorite MK&A movies! I 100% wanted to go there after seeing it!

  10. A vacation over NYE sounds like a fabulous idea! I'm a little jealous. I'd do the shorter cruise - no driving or stress, just sun and relaxation!

  11. CALIFORNIA!! My boss just did the PCH and said it was amazing!!!

  12. They all sound amazing!! My vote would be either the short cruise or the PCH!

  13. I have wanted to visit Atlantis since the Mary Kate and Ashley movie too, haha! They all seem like amazing options, I wouldn't know how to choose!

  14. They all sound amazing! San Fran is so much fun! There's so much to see and do in that city. The food is delicious and I'd definitely make a pit stop in Muir Woods to see the giant redwoods, eat at Ghirardelli square and ride a cable car around the city. Atlantis is also a wonderful option! It's stunning with the views, the water and all the things going on at the resort. The aquariums, slides and beach can't be beat. FYI I have heard if you go in the off season some of their restaurants are closed. You probably can't go wrong with any of these trips! Hope you and your hubby can decide soon so you can get busy planning :)

  15. Mark wants to do Cali or Italy for our one year and with all the planning, I have a feeling that Cali and the PCH is going to win out. I think it would be such a fun trip!

  16. You really can't go wrong with any of these!

  17. These all look like great options! Charleston weather is hit or miss during NYE. It's never too cold, but it's not warm either.

  18. Great options. Atlantis was so much fun!! But be warned, there were a ton of children. I couldn't get over how many children were there, I think they out numbered the adults. And when I say children, I mean babies and toddlers. I wish I could take vacation over NYE!! So fun!

  19. I dont think you could go wrong... I'm excited to see what you pick.
When I see Atlantis, I always think of Oprah when she did her show from there. If its good enough for Oprah, its gotta be good :)

  20. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Can I come? lol

  21. I'm the worst at wanting to go back to places I've been and have loved, haha, so I totally get why you're still keeping Charleston as a possibly maybe! I think any of the options sound like so much fun!

  22. I think you can guess my vote. SF and the coast!!

  23. We did a coastal trip up to San Fran this summer. It was so much fun and Monterey was definitely our favorite! We got engaged there so I may be a little bias :)

  24. Those are all awesome options. Our travel agent did advise us, when we were looking into Atlantis, do maybe do it as a cruise stop or visiting from another resort BC you can get it done in 1 day. So just a tip! I know royal Caribbean does 4 days from cape Canaveral that includes stops there.

  25. Um yes to all 3? Hah, I've always had California on my list and my husband really wants to try a cruise. Oh and holiday in the sun? YES, it made Atlantis a permanent fixture on my bucket list!

  26. Oh man!! Y'all have some tough decisions to make - all of those trips sound amazing! I would love to do a Cali coast drive but the Disney day/cruise sounds amazing too! We live like 20 min away from Cape Canaveral :)

  27. Ooh Charleston at the end of the Christmas season when the town is all decorated! Plus the bars! Do it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Atlantis all the way! I'm dying to go to a place in the Bahamas called Exuma Islands and I've thought about spending a couple days at both places! You can't beat that water!

    ReplyDelete
  29. These are tough ones to chose between girl!! I honestly think I would go with the cruise, since you guys haven't been in so long. Doing the one where neither of you would need to take any time off would be great. Plus the fact that you would be able to do so many things and go to a few different spots on each stop. Although California sounds amazing and I definitely want to drive down the PCH, so much to see and do!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would watch that MK&A Atlantis movie RIGHT. NOW. It doesn't seem like you are going to be able to go wrong with any of these options! I can't wait to see what you all decide :)

  31. These all sound SO awesome! Though I think I'd go for a warm location! So maybe Atlantis or a cruise! But all of those trips sound awesome! :)

  32. I am so biased to SF and the coast!!! If you decide on that- you'll never be bored!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I haven't done any of these places but I definitely think Atlantis is the way to go. It looks like a straight up PARADISE! I want to say it's all inclusive...? That could be total bullshit though, don't take my word for it. lol

  34. well obviously i vote charleston :-)
but SanFran has been on my travel wish list FOREVER. go there! xo jillian - cornflake dreams

  35. Ooh all fab options! I've always wanted to stay at Atlantis since the Mary Kate and Ashley movie lol, so that'd be my vote!

    ReplyDelete
  36. As a former California resident who has lived in multiple cities, I vote that option ;) I celebrated many NYE's in San Diego, LA and San Fran and they are the best ones! The cities are amazing and everyone is so happy! We did the coastal trip two times (I was 12 the first time, ha!) and it is a can't miss trip!

  37. I've never heard of the PCH idea before. Sounds like a great way to see Cali. Thanks!

  38. Hooray for narrowing down your options! My vote is for the California road trip - what better way to start the New Year than cruising down the coast and exploring new places?!

    ReplyDelete
  39. i totally vote cruise! haha. can't wait to see what you decide. we decided on a 7 night cruise and it has 3 days at sea.. i'm looking forward to the days at sea so that we can have lots of lounging around and drinking cocktails, because all of our past vacations have been go-go-go-go and we need a relaxing one lol. good luck!
