Pictures, Cameras, Oh My

Happy Tuesday!

I'm slowing coming out of my Christmas coma - so much good food and lots of traveling and visiting can really tire ya out!  We had such a nice holiday though and I can't believe it's all over, why does it always seem to go so fast?!  Christmas Eve through the 26th was spent with Nick's family on the east side of Michigan and then on Sunday, we headed west to see my family.  We were all properly spoiled with gifts (my favorite being this one!) and stuffed full of good food - it doesn't get much better than that.

We're back home now and actually literally stuck at home, after an ice storm hit our area all day yesterday.  I can't say I mind though - Nick is taking a few days off of work and we're just hanging out watching Netflix, eating all of the leftovers, and taking naps.  Oh, and online shopping because hellloooo, Christmas money!

Speaking of Christmas money, this is where I need your help: I'm going to use my money to invest in a nice camera (finally), but all of the different options out there are so overwhelming!  I solely use my cell phone to take pictures and that has been fine, but now that there is going to a baby around, I really don't want all of our pictures to be phone pictures.  You can't beat the convenience, but the quality just isn't the same.  I'm currently debating between these two: a Canon EOS Rebel T5 or an Olympus E-PL7... but am totally open to other options, too.

My main requirements are that it be lightweight and portable, have a fast shutter speed (like iPhone fast, if possible), be easy to use (major beginner status over here), and takes great pictures, duh.

Any recommendations?  Also, I'd love to hear how you guys store your photos.  One of my 2015 resolutions was to organize my pictures and I haven't touched them yet because again, talk about overwhelming.  I did some searching online and found Mix and Match Mama's 'how to' organize photos if anyone else is in the same boat as me, but otherwise I'm taking any and all tips or tricks!

Ps. sorry this was such a boring post, I'll be back tomorrow with some baby FAQs!

  1. I bought my Canon Rebel Ti2 on Black Friday back in 2010 and it's still one of the best investments I ever made. I absolutely love it and don't think you can go wrong with anything Canon related. I would recommend getting the Canon bundle that offers the second larger lens. I'm always switching between my two lenses. I always store my photos through dropbox. Easily accessible from any device and only $10/ month for a TB of storage. I have access to thousands of images at all times. I love it. If you download the app and connect to wifi, Dropbox will automatically back up the images on your iPhone (as long as your on wifi). If you need any additional advice, just email me :)

  2. I'll have to go back and look at the exact camper I use, but it is a canon-maybe the t2 or t3 rebel? I bought it on Amazon about two years ago around thanksgiving or Christmas. I sort of knew which one I wanted and when a package came along that was a great price, I jumped on it. I will say, I don't personally see the difference between canon and Nikon. I did a ton of reading and borrowing friend's cameras. Quite frankly, with the advent of new technology so often, don't stress yourself because you can switch as long as you haven't invested a ton in new lenses and such.

  3. Stay safe girl - we're having the snow come our way today!! I wish I could help on the camera front, but I dont have either of those - my sister does use the Canon and loves it for the kids! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  4. Sounds like you had a great few days - leftovers it's where it's at :). Stay safe and warm during the storm. I have a Nikon so I'm no help, but I have heard great things about Canon.

Can't wait to hear more about the baby news! Xx

  5. We have a Panasonic Lumix ZS50K and love it. It's a traditional point and shoot with some bells and whistles for learning more advanced photography skills. It's more portable than the big DSLRs, but we've been impressed with the quality of the photos we take. We travel internationally a lot and avoid backpacks when we're exploring cities, and my boyfriend can slip this into his pocket of needed. Overall, we've been really impressed with the quality - photos taken on the Lumix: https://robbinwrites.wordpress.com/category/travel/

Side note: lots of new cameras come pit in January/February, which means you can order the newest model in just a few weeks. It also means that they're selling the current models with lots of free extras - cases, tripods, etc - on sites like Amazon. Definitely worth weighing your options :-)

  7. OMG I totally missed the pregnancy announcement since I was working all day Christmas Eve but CONGRATULATIONS!!! So exciting! Stay safe in your snow storm, my friend is in WI right now and they're getting hammered. I've heard amazing things about the Canon and I've been looking at getting a new camera myself and I think that's my top runner! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

  8. So glad you had such a wonderful Christmas and I CAN NOT WAIT to hear more about your pregnancy so far!! Gah, this is exactly why I love blogland!!!

  9. I'm looking into a new camera as well.. I am completely clueless when it comes to this stuff so I'll be interested in seeing what you finally decide on! I've been looking at the canon rebel because it seems that a lot of people use those- esp. beauty blogger/ beauty you tubers.

  10. My first camera was a Canon RebelXTi, so I'm partial to Canon.... It also meant that I stayed with them when I upgraded to the 50D and 5DMII. That being said, look at the Sony Nex6. I've got one that I carry around in my purse and it's about the equivalent of my 50D but way smaller! It has the start with smartphone feature too... No Eyefi card required! ;) let me know if you have more questions!! ;)

  11. Definitely get a camera that is light weight! My camera (Nikon D3200) is fabulous, but it was a pain to lug around on our travels and I definitely don't have room to carry it in a diaper bag, so I don't use it as much as I'd like! Can't wait to hear more about baby!!

  12. My hubby bought my camera for me... his dad was a professional photographer and Joe helped out a lot with that, so I was fine with him choosing. He got me the Canon Rebel and I LOVE it! However, I have had it for years now and still haven't dug into how to really use it. I probably should do that, ha!

  13. I have a Canon Rebel and LOVE it (not sure of the model number - thinks it's a T3)! We got it when I was pregnant with Caleb, so it's been three years now, but it's still great. I still use my iPhone a lot, but my best photos are the ones I take on the DSLR. So excited to hear more about baby!

  14. So excited to hear more about baby! Organizing photos is so complicated, right now I have loads on my computer in folders by seasons and year.. Seperate folders for specific vacations or events where there are lots of photos.. I also have folders on the Walgreens photo section online!

  15. Like I told you about my new Samsung Galaxy camera - I do love that it is easy to upload pictures so they dont sit on a card or on a phone - I instantly upload to Shutterfly from the phone so I can do prints or even order a photo book :) ... if you like the speed of a phone, you'd like this one too. Plus, it has a lot of settings for the 'just pick up & click' person.

Good luck choosing - I know with a baby, it will be PHOTO CENTRAL at your house soon :)

  16. I have the Canon Rebel and I really like it. I'm completely camera illiterate and it's very user friendly!

  17. Yay for leftovers and relaxation!! And you will love having a camera- it changes everything haha!! I have the Canon SL1 and I loveee it. It's a DSLR but it's the smallest/lightest one they make. You can't fit it in your clutch BUT it's not heavy at all. It's super easy to use and I'd definitely look into it!

  18. Sounds like a great Christmas!! I would recommend the Canon T5i but I wouldn't say its very portable, once you put a lens on it, any DSLR will be on the bigger side. I have the Canon T3i and I love it. It was really easy to use as a beginner and I've been able to slowly learn how to use other lenses and work in manual.

  19. Ugh, photo organization. I store everything by season>month>event and finally broke down and got an external hard drive for pictures.
My new focus is actually printing those pictures and putting them in albums. I'm still working on how to do this effectively - I usually use shutterfly photobooks, but I am going to switch to regular albums and just add pictures as I go.
Good luck on the camera - can't wait to hear what you choose.

  20. Photo storage and organization is my big downfall. I have the Canon and love it so much! I have had it for four years and still love it. It's easy to get started on and you can really do everything in auto until you learn how to do it manually. I love it and can't say enough good things!

  21. i got a new camera recently and i love it, it's not a fancy dslr though, but i don't mind because that's way too hardcore for me. right now, i organise my photos in years and months, but i want to organise them more like specific events need their own folder inside those months. what i really need to do is back them up though, because i've lost photos before and that's not fun at all.

  22. I organize my photos into years and months on a backup drive. I don't trust online backups too much and having a techie husband he loaded me up with the best backup. Good luck with the purchase!

  23. Sounds like an awesome Christmas! And being snowed in doesn't sound half bad at your place!! So for cameras, I have the canon t5i I LOVE IT!! I would also recommend checking out stores that sell cameras on ebay, too! I got mine for like $300 cheaper than I found on amazon and it was brand new from a store on ebay! Plus it has a warranty so it's even better in case something happens. I would recommend Canon over Olympus only because you will have WAY more lens options with canon. Honestly it's more about the lens than it is about the actual camera. The lens is what takes a great picture! I would look into a 50mm lens if I were you, it's a great lens and on the cheaper end as well! Takes amazing pictures and I love mine! Whatever you pick I am sure you'll love it!

  24. Glad that you had a wonderful Christmas! We got pounded with 10+ inches of snow last night, so I'm with you on staying in and watching Netflix. :) Okay, as far as cameras - I think the Olympus is the way to go. I have the Canon Rebel T5i and as much as I love it, I HATE bringing it with me because it's big, heavy and not convenient. I've heard the Olympus is much more travel-friendly and still packs a major punch with photos.

  25. I have a Canon Rebel T3i and love it! It's not the most lightweight camera though. When we were in Rwanda, I used a Nikon though and was shocked at how light it was. If you ever figure out how to organize your photos, please let me know! After getting a new computer, I've got pictures everywhere!

  27. Eek I was so so excited to see your Instagram post about the baby news, big congrats to you and Nick, can't wait to read more tomorrow!! I don't have any idea with the camera questions, but I know a few friends who have the Canon Rebel and looove it!! I've used/seen pictures from it and it takes awesome quality pictures so I hope that helps! Ughh that ice storm was totally not appreciated because unfortunately I still had to truck all the way to work and back, talk about major traffic delays! Glad you got to enjoy Christmas with your family, hope you enjoy the few days off :)!

  30. I LOVE my Canon Rebel T3! It takes the best pictures, has so many lens options and is so easy to use. It's lightweight and perfect to learn on. It takes great pictures in every setting and I know there's so much more I could learn about it. I'd also avoid Nikons bc they are so difficult to learn to use. My last camera was a Nikon and it was a total waste of money. Happy camera hunting!!
