How To Layer Your Skin Care Products

Serums,  moisturizers, oils, sunscreen... just a few of the many things we put on our faces on a daily basis!  They do all have a purpose, but did you know that the order in which you apply them can make a HUGE difference in how well they work?  I had no idea until I started getting regular facials last summer and my esthetician would tell me how to properly use the products I was buying from her.  Here are a few tips I've picked up along the way and the routine that I follow each day.

NIGHT

1. Obviously the process starts with washing your face.  I have used La Roche Posay's Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cream for something like 6, 7? years now and it's just the best.  A dermatologist recommended it to me when I was having skin problems and while I've cheated on it here and there, I always come back to it.  And I always use my Clarisonic (on sale right now!) because that thing is just the best.

2. After washing, I use Mario Badescu's Aloe Vera Toner.  Love the price, love the mild scent and love that it's alcohol free (won't dry out your skin).  I consider a toner a must to get off the rest of the product gunk on your skin that just washing it can leave behind - the proof is on the cotton ball!

3. Serums are next because they are the thinnest product so they need to go on clean, dry skin to be able to penetrate effectively.  I have been using Kiehl's Midnight Recovery (on sale right now, too) since the winter and am a huge fan.  I really feel that it makes my skin brighter, clearer and moisturized without being greasy.

4. Next up is a Vitamin C antioxidant serum.  Vitamin C is important for brightening your skin, protecting against sun damage and being a collagen booster.  It's not pictured because I'm currently out, but I have long used this one by Ole Henricksen.  I like it, but don't love it so I'm going to try this Mad Hippie one recommended in Kristin Cavallari's book (see my review here!).  This Obagi brand is also another super popular vitamin C serum that I want to try one day.

5. Once those products dry (I'll usually brush my teeth to give them a few minute to sink in), I apply my moisturizer.  Belif Moisture Bomb is my go to right now.  It's awesome.  It's super lightweight, but still provides deep moisturization.  This is the only moisturizer I've used that when I wake up, my face still feels good, not that tight and dry feeling.  I also use this eye cream (on sale as well) at night.

6. And last step, retinol.  Applying after serums and night cream is best because the moisture helps to penetrate the skin better with less irritation. I haven't used my Skinceuticals Retinol 0.5 since being pregnant, but I can't wait to start again because it is AMAZING.  Retinol helps with fine lines and makes your skin appear smoother and clearer.  I only used it for a few couple months last summer and was already seeing a difference.  Make sure to only use it at night as the sun can cause irritation to your skin.

MORNING

My morning routine is much simpler.  Since I have pretty dry skin, I don't wash my face in the AM - I just splash cold water on it to help me wake up and have a clean slate.  I then use my toner to get rid of all of the products from the previous night and apply my moisturizer + this Origins eye cream.  What's missing?  A sunscreen.  The only thing I truly hate about the Belif cream is that it doesn't contain SPF... so now I really need to find a great sunscreen to use each day.  I tried this one, but really wasn't impressed.  Any recommendations?  Sunscreen should always be your last application step as anything you layer over top of it can make it less effective.

What's your FAVORITE skincare product?  I'm kind of a junkie and love trying new things, so let me know!

  1. LOVE this post! I have always been a little bit confused when you use all of these products in conjunction as to which one is the best. And I'm so glad you mentioned the retinol.. I have a whole tube and I never use it because I really didn't know where it went in the line of things. Thank you!!

Also, Clinique's "Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer" has SPF and it is fantastic! I just finished my first jar and I am so impressed. I admittedly avoid SPF because I hate how it goes on, but this cream absorbs perfectly and makes my skin super soft. I think you will love it!

  2. This is so helpful! I just started using an antioxidant serum and am planning on incorporating a retinol as well - I'm 26 and starting to panic about wrinkles ;) Have you tried the Kiehl's eye cream with avocado? I keep hearing great things about it.
I'm pretty devoted to sunscreen - I love the Shiseido Urban Environment sunscreen. I feel like it wears well under makeup. I also love the CeraVe AM moisturizer with sunscreen. My dermatologist recommended it and it is my go-to for every day wear!

  3. This post is so great. I have been struggling trying to figure out what to put on first and what not. Thanks for sharing this. I use Trish McEvoy Vitamin C cream and love it. It totally brightens my skin. On the nights I don't put it on, I totally see the difference in my skin in the morning.

  4. I really should look into more skin care things. I honestly just wash my face and then put moisturizer on (both at night and then in the morning after I hit the gym). If I wore make up that day then I'll probably use a toner or make up removing wipes to make sure I get it all off, but that's about it. I like your routine! It seems to be full of healthy steps!

  5. Great post!! If you find a sunscreen you love let me know. My new obsession is BeautyCounter! LOVE their products and how safe they are (you should check out their baby line!). I'm doing a review post on their products in the next week but I basically love everything and feel great about using it!

  6. I need to add more products to my skin care regimen! I have been using a neutrogena deep moisture day cream in the morning that has spf and I really like it (got it at Target!). I also apply a tinted BB cream with spf on top of that before putting on my make up.

  8. Night: Mario Badescu Glycolic Fiaming wash. Clinique Turnaround Concentrate is my "go to" serum. It is truly amazing! I rotate that under my night moisturizer (can't find one I love) with my Dr prescribed retinol every other night. Mornings: Cetaphil gentle wash, Image Reconstructive Serum and Ultraluxe Micro venom SPF 30 Face. I have tried multiple SPF to wear under my mineral foundation and this is the only one I have found that sinks in and doesn't leave me greasy by noon. Also it is the only SPF that protects long term. I struggle with freckles when in prolonged sun. Apparently the Apple Stem Cells in the product are unique. I'll use it as long as they make it...

  9. Since you're a fan of another La Roche Posay product, you should try their Anthelios Sunscreen Fluid. I've used it before and I really liked it. I hate when products with sunscreen make you shiny by the end of the day, but this one was light and I couldn't even tell I had sunscreen on. I think Ulta has it.

  14. I looove the murad moisturizer with SPF, I can't think of the name right now, but the bottle is orange and I think it also has vitamin c in it. The only downside is that it's $60 for a really small bottleI think the belif moisturizer is my current favorite skincare product.

  15. I was very anti-toners because I have dry skin and thought toners would just make it worse, but have found that I love the Thayer's Rose Water and Witch Hazel toner. It calms redness and you are right girl, even though I use a Clarisonic, I still see some makeup residue on the cotton ball now and then, so I know it's doing something!

I have heard great things about the Skinceuticals retinol, and will definitely be trying it for myself after this baby arrives, as I have always wanted to try retinol! I recently started using Rodan & Fields microderm paste a couple of times a week, and it has been a GAME changer. Smaller pores, tighter skin, brighter complexion - the works. I felt like I got suckered into buying it, but I'm so glad I did now, lol!:)

  16. Great post, lady! It really does make a difference in what order we apply products. I've been loving my La Roche Posay Effaclar cleanser - it's completely saved my skin and calmed down my acne. I might try your cleanser at some point because I'm worried I'm over-treating my skin with the acne medication that's in it. I'm also looking for a good facial sunscreen, so keep me posted if you find one!

  17. I love hearing people's routines, especially with skin care. Mine is so spastic, I really wanna get one down and be consistent because my skin is not the greatest. Gonna try some of these products out! Love the Mario B stuff.

  18. La mer gel cream. Hands down. It's the lightest, softest moisturizer ever.

  19. Your nighttime routine is no joke! I think I need to add a few of your steps in, especially the retinol! I personally love the Neutrogena Face sunscreen. It's not pricey, and goes on so much more lightly than most others. I use it on my kids, too!

  20. Helloooo skincare!! You know I'm all about this post and I'm trying to be better about my nighttime routine but I often get too tired and lazy to do anything more that cleanse and moisturize. Ugh!! And lucky for you, I'm doing a post on my favorite sunscreens next week. For your face, I'd recommend the Elta MD UV daily or the tinted MD Solar Sciences SPF 30- they actually sell that one at Sephora and it feels great on your skin, super silky but with a matte finish :)

  21. Layering your daily skin care products can have some major benefits for your complexion. By combining a collection of main ingredients, you’ll improve effectiveness, yielding more impressive results and a natural glow :-)
In my daily skin care routine I love to use anti aging cream by Revitol

  22. I'm so happy I came across this post. I never know which order to use some products in. I always figured because I use a serum and night cream there is no point in using retinol but now I know to put it on last!
